Tour of America

Stage 2/21 Baltimore - Philadelphia 195,4 km

The 2nd stage and first long race day starts in Baltimore, form there moving northeast passing Wilmington, Delaware before reaching the destination in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The stage is very flat favoring a sprinter victory, with just an almost symbolic cat4 climb to set the early KoM lead.

Three intermediate sprints, Rossville after 16.1 km, Havre after 75.3 km and one in Wilmington after 124.8 km

One KoM sprint at Rossdale after just 5.5 km (cat4)

In 2015 the stage was won by Raúl Granjel Cabrera
The sun is shining from a clear sky and almost no wind.

List of stage favorites:

As soon as the KoM climb begins, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio accelerate away from the bunch, and passes over the KoM with 52 seconds to the peloton.

The peloton get to the KoM together, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Appleby and then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Joeaar takes the remaining points at Rossdale.

After the KoM pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Andriafenomananiaina and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince join’s the breakaway.

There are more attempts from the peloton, keeping the pace relative high, but none get away. The breakaway get to the first intermediate sprint in Rossville with 2’03 to the peloton.

After another 8 km pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Magnusson attack from the peloton, the strong rouleur soon get contact with the breakaway.

To keep the fast peloton away Magnusson keeps a high pace, and soon pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Andriafenomananiaina can’t keep up.

Soon the peloton calm down, the pace decreases significantly. The two breakaway groups melt together again, and de distance grow. When the breakaway reach the 2nd intermediate sprint after a total of 75 km they got 6’39.

Soon pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Schuh set Perry and Barclay in front, to defend Mark Christian’s race lead. When the breakaway get to the final sprint, the distance is down to 4’04.

Just as the last time, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Magnusson wins in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince

The breakaway is over with 14.5 km to the line. The peloton is hammering towards the line.
With about 4.5 km to the line an unusual development, two trains are up pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Aeropostal Venezuela Ciclismo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Eritel – Sonatrach but while the Aeropostal train looks good, three rider are alone in front at the Eritel train, disconnected from top sprinter pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Van Heerden.

Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Benfatto, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Martins, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Sutton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Selig and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski are caught behind Van Heerden.

While pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Giacoppo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla are placed much better sitting behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera in the Aeropostal train, with Rujano in front, then Dall'Antonia and Cardoso.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage2/8.jpg

3 km to the line

In front still the Aeropostal train with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera, on wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Giacoppo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla, behind them a fast pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski trying to close the gap.

The pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Eritel – Sonatrach train is trying to reorganize, but has fallen further back.

Some Sprinters like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Sonnery and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Hoffman is not even free of the peloton yet, a chaotic situation for many riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage2/9.jpg

1.4 km to the line
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski connect with the first group. With 1.4 km to go pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso opens the sprint and is first under the red kite.

800 m to the line
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso still in front but seemingly about to move out, behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Giacoppo side by side.

Close to the side banners at the far right side of the road pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla a cycle length behind, and in the middle of the road pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski losing some pace, struggling after the hard effort he did to just get in this train.

400 m to the line
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso has thrown in the towel, job done to perfection.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera leading with just a meter over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Giacoppo now on his right side.

On Granjel Cabrera’s wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mansilla and behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Ulanowski, reborn and coming closer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/TOAmerica/Stage2/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Benfatto wins the bunch sprint, but that is for 7th, as both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cardoso and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia from the Aeropostal train has already passed the line.
The first 100+ riders gets the same time, might not be totally fair there was a substantial gap.
