Deutschland Tour - Stage 8

Deutschland Tour

Stage 8/8 Wolfhagen – Münster 171.8 km

The Tour has moved about 120 km north to Wolfhagen near Kassel, still in Bundesland Hessen, form here the route moves northwest finishing in Münster, Bundesland Nordrhein-Westfalen.

This last stage will most likely not have any influence on the GC, with a flat route it will either end in a mass sprint or a breakaway win.

Only one intermediate sprints in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, with 52 km to the finish.
Two KoM sprints, Helle after 21 km (cat4) and Hohlestein after 68 km (cat3).

The race starts in nice sunny weather, but with a fresh to hard breeze; the forecast predict that it will be rather clouded later with possible showers.

List of stage favorites:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Niki Terpstra launches the early break, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Lietaer follows.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/1.jpg

After about 10 km they got 2’00, then also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Smit, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Stybar and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Martens attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/2.jpg

The two groups melt together before the first climb. It seems that they have agreed to fight only for a stage win at least there is no KoM sprint, as they just pass the top together.

First pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Smit, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf.
3’46 to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/3.jpg

We get the same pattern on the next climb, again no sprint.
First pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Stybar, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Smit and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander.

With the composition of the breakaway this morning, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Michael Olsson’s KoM victory was basically safe, but now it is cemented, only a crash can wipe the smile off his face.

The peloton at 5’25

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/4.jpg

At this point the peloton increase the pace, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Evonik, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Pokerstars, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Tinkoff and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Aegon working together, the distance start to diminish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/5.jpg

The breakaway reach the intermediate sprint, still no sprint for the points.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Lietaer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Smit

It has started to rain, the peloton at 2’40.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/6.jpg

Behind the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Bugge losing time, he had a puncture.

The breakaway moves under the 20km banner with 1’24, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Echarri leading the pack with 52 km/h.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/7.jpg

10 km - 1’09

5 km - 44”

3.6 km, the peloton is now right behind the breakaway, it is coming to a mass sprint finish.

Sprint trains are forming, leading in the middle of the road, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Meersman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dzamastagic, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dakteris in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen on his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis

To the right just ½ a wheel length behind, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Janorschke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb on his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Kump

To the left, 3-4 meter’s back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Van der Sanden in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift

Behind the trains we see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway, in the right side 6-8 meters behind the trains. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Howard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek to the left, at this point at least 12 meters behind the trains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/8.jpg

2.0 km, things have changed quite significantly.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Aegon – Lavazza now clearly in the lead, Sean De Bie is pulling out now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Van der Sanden leading for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift, with an incredible move from way back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kreder now glued to Swift’s wheel.

Behind the Aegon train to the right, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dzamastagic is pulling off, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dakteris leading out for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen, on wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis and now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Kump moved over from the Pokerstars train.

Trying to get contact with Kump, 2 meters behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway, to his left somewhat alone pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Enger.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb have been completely squeezed of his train, now in an impossible situation in the middle of a chunk of riders. It stead we got, 6-8 meters behind Holloway, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Janorschke with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs on wheel, by his side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Rowe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/9.jpg

Under the red kite:

Evonik - ELKO now in front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dakteris leading for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen.

To the right pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis trying to pass on Van Stayen’s inside with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Kump and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway.

Further right pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek coming fast with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs on wheel.

To the left of Evonik, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Van der Sanden with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift they have lost 2 meters.

Further left, almost side by side with Swift, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kreder slightly in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Rowe, who have been very fast over the last 500 meters.

Also in front of the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb in that order, but that are from 15-25 meters behind, unlikely that any of them will get in top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/10-1.jpg

500m:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis have taken the lead.

Right behind Tzortzakis, side by side from right to left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Kump and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen

Behind them to the right pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs and to the left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kreder, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Rowe.

In the background pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss is coming closer, everyone else is far behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage8/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis wins the final stage in Münster, too exhausted for any kind of celebrations.

In a photo finish pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Kump 2nd in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway and then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift rounds of top 5.

From a good position pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek lose momentum and have to settle for 8th. Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Rowe explodes and loses 10th to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss.
