Deutschland Tour - Stage 6

Deutschland Tour

Stage 6/8 Singen - Ladstatt 189.8 km

The Tour train has moved about 450 km south west to Singen (Hohentwiel) in Bundesland Baden-Württemberg, from here the route go to Freiburg im Breisgau.

Officially the stage end in “Ladstatt”, but that is just a village which no longer exists, in the woods outside the city of Freiburg, a long story we don’t have time for here.

This may actually be at least one of the hardest stages of the race, if not the hardest. The uphill finish is very steep, although a lot shorter than tomorrow’s. But the Category 2 climb to Feldberg, with just 48 km to the finish is very tough. A 12 km climb, the last 4 km very hard with gradient above 10%, clearly the hardest climb of the race.

Only one intermediate sprints in Waldshut, after 65 km.

Three KoM sprints, Worberg after just 17 km, 4.0 km at 4.9% (cat3), Feldberg with 48 km to the finish, 12.0 km at 5.4% (cat2), and Höchst Berg, 4.3 km at 4.9% (cat3) with just 26 km left of the race.

There is additional 5,3,1 at the KoM points at the finish line.

It is very sunny and hot today, with no wind at all

List of stage favorites:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/F.jpg

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland who launches what is to become todays early breakaway, he is soon joined by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Sinkeldam, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Fumeaux, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Olsson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Tanovitchii which is the best placed rider in the break at 2’28.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Sinkeldam wins he KoM sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Tanovitchii. The peloton is at 2’10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/1.jpg

A few km after the peloton was over the climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Martens attacks, and without too much hassle gets contact with the breakaway, 6 riders are now in front of the race with 150 km to go at 3’01.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/2.jpg

The peloton is led by 3 riders from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Tinkoff Sport Academy, holding the breakaway at a stable distance of about 3’15.

When break reach the intermediate sprint, only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Tanovitchii is sprinting for the bonus seconds, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Sinkeldam and after him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland takes the remaining points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/3.jpg

With just 38 slightly uphill km to the start of a frightening climb to Feldberg, there is a huge crash in the middle of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Stybar, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Manfredi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Seibeb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc_aus.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Manfred, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Vysna, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Watson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_eth.png Kebede, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Siskevicius and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Houle are all down.

Even worse pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Vichot step into the team car, unable to continue.

The seriousness of this is evident by the amount of “domestiques” coming back to help, a total of 13 riders from different teams.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/4.jpg

The peloton is united again before the breakaway starts the climb.

Up front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland is in trouble, struggling hard to keep contact, a little later also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Martens and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Sinkeldam has to let go.

Then with 2.6 km to the top, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Fumeaux attacks and wins the KoM sprint with a margin of 44”.

Result of Feldberg:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.pngFumeaux 10
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Tanovitchii8
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.pngOlsson 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Sinkeldam 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.pngMartens2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/5.jpg

Then the front of the peloton accelerate, huge chunks of riders all losing a lot of time, the camera spots pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Houle 1’52 behind the peloton, also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs 3’30 behind the peloton when it passes over the top.

Fumeaux has 5’12 when the front of the peloton passes the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/6.jpg

To some surprise considering the gap he had to the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Fumeaux wait for the others except pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland who exploded and was eaten by the peloton,

The 5 five riders in front has 2’28 when they start the last KoM climb. Again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Fumeaux wins the KoM sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Tanovitchii and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Sinkeldam.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/7.jpg

With just a little more than 20 km to the line and the last KoM climb done, let’s take a deeper look at the situation of some of the riders. Obviously we still got pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Fumeaux in front.

At 1’08
The rest of the breakaway: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Tanovitchii, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Sinkeldam, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Olsson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Martens.

At 2’10
The peloton of 87 riders, in this group we can see: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Gastauer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky.

At 3’53
20 riders with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc_aus.png Bobridge

At 5 minutes or more
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Rybakov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Schumacher, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, in that order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/8.jpg

The riders are definitely tired at this point, but the pace in the peloton is very high. They have started the slightly uphill section, before the final climb to the finish line at Ladstatt.

Fronting the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Bugge is hammering up a slope of 3.8% with 47 km/h, 15 km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/9.jpg

When the breakaway is over with 7.4 km to the line, the fight for position begins.

2 km to the line
The peloton hits the foot of the climb. First on the climb is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen.
just a wheel length behind, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Thomson, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Felline with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman on wheel.

Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen still has help from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Siskevicius both sitting right behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi

At the left side of the road about 4-5 meter from the front we see, from left to right, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen, a little in front of him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky and behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/10.jpg

1.5 km to the line
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi has taken the lead at the right side, cutting the curve as short as possible, at his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen and right beside him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Felline protecting pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman by his side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky who has made a great move getting in this fine position.

2-3 meters behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Siskevicius with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen are they losing contact?

At the middle of the road pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni. just 4-6 meters behind.

We can spot race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov at about 20th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/11.jpg

Under the red kite

Now on a straight line at each other’s wheel, first pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen, and then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman ,still with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Felline, side by side.

Race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov at 12-13th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/12.jpg

500 m to the line

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi is very fast now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen has lost his wheel, behind him we still got pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan and on wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni have moved forward very fast, passing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman who is struggling just to hang on to teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Felline.

Race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov at 11th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi wins the stage in Freiburg im Breisgau with 6 seconds to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage6/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky takes the last podium. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen round of top 5 all in the same time.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen beats pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni in a last minute comeback for 7th.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov at 11th position loses 12 seconds and the race lead to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen
