Deutschland Tour

Stage 5/8 Plauen - Weiden in der Oberpfalz 208.1 km

The Tour has moved just 100 km west to Plauen, we are still in Bundesland Sachsen , from here the route moves south to Weiden in der Oberpfalz, in Bundesland Bayern

With 208 km it is the longest stage of the race, the route is sometimes rather rolling, but with more than 40 flat km up to the finish line, clearly favors the sprinters.

Two intermediate sprints, one in Bayreuth about mid stage, and one in Falkenberg with 38 km to the finish line.

Two KoM sprints, Blosenberg after 22 km (cat4) and Hessenreuther Berg, 8.4 km at 3.2% but a lot harder near the top, with 56 km to the finish. (cat3)

The weather is perfect, sunshine and very little wind.

List of stage favorites:

Still with the start line banner in sight, KoM leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Olsson attack, but even though he tries several times with different combinations of riders, he won’t end up in today breakaway.

First over the early KoM sprint is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Hivert in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_ven.png Abreu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Terpstra, in the breakaway we also got pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Canty and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Edmondson they got 1’37 to the peloton over the top of the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage5/2.jpg

It looks like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Edmondson is not feeling ok today, was hard for him on the climb and after a while he start to fall back towards the peloton.

In the meantime a new group of riders have attacked, they make contact with the original break 11 km after the climb, it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lammertink, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Polnicky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Gougeard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Lietaer

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage5/3.jpg

Soon also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Terpstra has given up and fall back to the peloton, 8 riders now lead the race.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Thomson has a puncture closing a gap of 1’54, but it is not that hard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Shilov leads the peloton for race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov and they are not worried about the breakaway at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage5/4.jpg

When the breakaway reach the first sprint they got 5’19, 124 km to go. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Canty wins the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Lietaer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Polnicky

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage5/5.jpg

The pace gets higher when a coalition of the sprinters teams, start to take over after the first 110 km. When the break passes over the top of the last KoM climb the distance is 3’20.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Polnicky wins the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Hiver and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Lietaer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage5/6.jpg

After the climb the pace is getting very intense, forcing some riders to flash the sponsor logo at the wrong end of the peloton, they can’t keep up.

The breakaway passes the final sprint with 1’50, 38 km to the finish.
The sprint was won by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Hivert in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Lietaer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_ven.png Abreu

6.5 km to the line pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Polnicky makes his final move, with the peloton at 47”, but with just 2.9 km to the line the breakaway is over.

The peloton is led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Bar, getting pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek in the best possible position, but also with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb sitting ready just behind the train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage5/11.jpg

300 meter to the line

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway is now 3-4 meters in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb who might have started to early.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek another 4-5 meters behind is coming very fast already a cycle length in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Roelandts and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Enger, the two of them both losing momentum.

At the left side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu and now suddently also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis is coming fast, at the right side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift. All still in contest for a top 5.

And !

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway wins the stage in Weiden in der Oberpfalz.

Behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek now almost side by side with 10-15 meter to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage5/12.jpg
