Deutschland Tour
Stage 5/8 Plauen - Weiden in der Oberpfalz 208.1 km
The Tour has moved just 100 km west to Plauen, we are still in Bundesland Sachsen , from here the route moves south to Weiden in der Oberpfalz, in Bundesland Bayern
With 208 km it is the longest stage of the race, the route is sometimes rather rolling, but with more than 40 flat km up to the finish line, clearly favors the sprinters.
Two intermediate sprints, one in Bayreuth about mid stage, and one in Falkenberg with 38 km to the finish line.
Two KoM sprints, Blosenberg after 22 km (cat4) and Hessenreuther Berg, 8.4 km at 3.2% but a lot harder near the top, with 56 km to the finish. (cat3)
The weather is perfect, sunshine and very little wind.
List of stage favorites:
Still with the start line banner in sight, KoM leader Olsson attack, but even though he tries several times with different combinations of riders, he won’t end up in today breakaway.
First over the early KoM sprint is Hivert in front of Abreu and Terpstra, in the breakaway we also got Canty and Edmondson they got 1’37 to the peloton over the top of the climb.
It looks like Edmondson is not feeling ok today, was hard for him on the climb and after a while he start to fall back towards the peloton.
In the meantime a new group of riders have attacked, they make contact with the original break 11 km after the climb, it is Lammertink, Polnicky, Barbero, Gougeard and Lietaer
Soon also Terpstra has given up and fall back to the peloton, 8 riders now lead the race.
Thomson has a puncture closing a gap of 1’54, but it is not that hard, Shilov leads the peloton for race leader Trofimov and they are not worried about the breakaway at this point.
When the breakaway reach the first sprint they got 5’19, 124 km to go. Canty wins the sprint in front of Lietaer and Polnicky
The pace gets higher when a coalition of the sprinters teams, start to take over after the first 110 km. When the break passes over the top of the last KoM climb the distance is 3’20.
Polnicky wins the sprint in front of Hiver and Lietaer.
After the climb the pace is getting very intense, forcing some riders to flash the sponsor logo at the wrong end of the peloton, they can’t keep up.
The breakaway passes the final sprint with 1’50, 38 km to the finish.
The sprint was won by Hivert in front of Lietaer and Abreu
6.5 km to the line Polnicky makes his final move, with the peloton at 47”, but with just 2.9 km to the line the breakaway is over.
The peloton is led by Bar, getting Ciolek in the best possible position, but also with Degenkolb sitting ready just behind the train.
1.8 km to the line
At the right side of the road, Lander from the Puma train.
In the middle Jocelyn Bar starting the sprint with Ciolek on wheel.
At the left Degenkolb, glued to his wheel, very alert Dan Holloway.
6-8 meters behind Roelandts and Enger
Another 6-8 m further back Rowe, Grosu, Swift and Felline, in that order.
Under the Red Kite
Degenkolb first still with Holloway glued.
Enger have pased Ciolek now third, and so has Roelandts.
Ciolek in 5th position, 3-4 meters behind him, from left to right Grosu, Rowe and Swift all on line.
300 meter to the line
Holloway is now 3-4 meters in front of Degenkolb who might have started to early.
Ciolek another 4-5 meters behind is coming very fast already a cycle length in front of Roelandts and Enger, the two of them both losing momentum.
At the left side Grosu and now suddently also Tzortzakis is coming fast, at the right side Swift. All still in contest for a top 5.
And !
Holloway wins the stage in Weiden in der Oberpfalz.
Behind him Degenkolb and Ciolek now almost side by side with 10-15 meter to the line.
Ciolek wins the battle for 2nd in front of Degenkolb, Grosu and then Tzortzakis round of top 5
