Deutschland Tour

Stage 4/8 Dresden - Rübenau 199.8 km

The Tour has moved about 250 km straight east to Dresden, in Bundesland Sachsen, from here the route moves southwest to Rübenau, a small rural district near Sachsen city Marienberg very close to the Czech Republic border.

The first part of the stage is relative flat, but the second half is very hilly, ending in a 10 km uphill climb towards the finish.

Today only one intermediate sprints, in Frankenberg after 50 km.
Three KoM sprints, first the hardest Bernsbacher Höhe, 6.8 km at 5,1%, 89 km to the finish. (cat2)
Zigeunerfelsen, 3,7km at 7.1%, 59 km to the finish. (cat3)
Hirtstein, 4.8 km at 4.7%, 46 km to the finish. (cat3)
There is additional 5,3,1 KoM points at the finish line.

It is partly cloudy but doesn’t look like rain. Hard winds, 30-47 km/h form different angels, side wind on the final km’s.

List of stage favorites:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/F.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland initiates the breakaway, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Stoltz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf and KoM leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Martens counters. Later also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Olsson joins, closing a gap of 2’45.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland is clearly the strongest puncheur in the group, could be very hard for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Martens to maintain a KoM lead after today.

The group get to the intermediate sprint with 3’25, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf wins in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Olsson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Stoltz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Pokerstar is leading the peloton in a rather high pace not allowing the breakaway much distance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/2.jpg

The breakaway starts the climb to Bernsbacher Höhe with 2’05, with just a short hard push pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland destroy any resistance, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Martens is not looking good, falling back alone.

Bernsbacher Höhe:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland 10p
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Olsson 8p
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf 6p
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Stoltz 4p
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Martens 2p

Over the top pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland has 1’12 to the 2nd group and 5’33 to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/3.jpg

On the descent pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Nechita crashes, he is 3’09 behind the peloton before the get back on the saddle.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland decides to slow down and wait for the others, they start the 2nd climb 2’26 ahead of the bunch. Again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland makes an early move, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Olsson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Stoltz try to keep up, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Martens just keep their pace falling behind quickly.

The KoM sprint was won by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Olsson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Stoltz, after the top Stoltz fall back to join the duo behind him, and after the descent they are eaten by the peloton.

At the start of the last KoM climb the situation is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland in front with 45’ to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Olsson and 2’51 to the Peloton.

Result of the last KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Olsson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_ven.png Abreu.

18 km to the finish, we are at an 8 km flat section before the final climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland alone in front at 1’04.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen attack, countered by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni. The four rider close the gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland fast, but due to a coalition of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Tinkoff Sport Academy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Team Puma-SAP setting in a hard pursuit, they never get the gap they wanted. With 11.3 km left it is all over, a peloton of 146 riders lead the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/5.jpg

It is not clear why, but behind the peloton basically the entire Grieg – Eftel team is back to help their leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Watson, they are already 3’16 behind and no crash was reported.

The peloton starts the climb, with 8 km to the top pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman accelerate, 11 riders manage to keep contact, besides Kelderman we now have pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png De Bie pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Pichon pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs in front of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/6.jpg

6.5 km to the top, the peloton is now 1’08 behind the favorite group. Another attack at the front, it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov and the others doesn’t seem willing or able to respond.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/7.jpg

The cameras have found the first victim of the hard pace, in the back of the favorite group, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Pichon can’t keep contact with the wheel in front, either he is boiling over, or at best has decided to select his own pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/8.jpg

3.5 km to the top another attack, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen accelerate away from the “poursuivant” and try to close the gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen gets contact with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov and they move under the red kite with 49 seconds to the next group, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov starts the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/10.jpg

When the next group passes under the red kite, all 10 are still together, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Pichon was able to close the small gab he had previously.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys and behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman has created a small distance to the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov wins the stage in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen, with 46 seconds to the next group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Deutschland/Stage4/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys takes the last podium in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni round of top 5
