Giro del Trentino - Stage 5
SportingNonsense
The final stage, and with 3 mountains to tackle. Can anyone take the fight to Florentino Marquez?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pirazzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Parra Bustamante and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Morabito formed the breakaway. Then 20km later pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gen.png Rolland decided to cross a 3 minute gap, making it 4.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-2.jpg

First Cat 1 climb of the day is the Passo Pompaego, and their lead is a slender 2'45. But it starts rising, in sync with the road. Morabito is dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-3.jpg

And by the top, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pirazzi is alone with a 1 minute lead. And by the top of the second Cat 1 climb, he has extended that to over 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-4.jpg

At which point we see Parra Bustamente for 2nd on the climb, and to leave Rolland behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Rosa and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Le Bon took an interest in the minor KoM points, and after the 2nd climb they decided to keep it going - because the peloton have turned very passive over the two climbs, and those gaps have rocketed.

As Pirazzi approaches the 20km to go mark, the peloton are 10 minutes behind him!

Parra Bustamente is at 3'39; Rollan 4'07; Morabito 5'53; Le Bon and Rosa 7'04.

Coldeportes eventually start driving the peloton, and cutting that gap, but Pirazzi is in a commanding position onto the Passo Pordoi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-6.jpg

At 12km to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Martin is once again the first peloton attacker. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Valls is right on him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-7.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti follows a little later and reaches Valls, but Martin is ahead - and now up alongside Rosa. (Le Bon is back in the peloton now).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-8.jpg

Shimano lead the peloton but it is Jang, and Martin gains a dangerous 1'30 on the group quite quickly. In not much time at all, the Irishman has also now passed Rolland, and caught Parra Bustamente.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-9.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Kiserlovski has eventually taken on pace setting, and his viscious pace wipes out Valls and Intxausti, while reducing Martin's lead also.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti reacts by attacking again, Valls too. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/san.png Marquez is first on them, with Uran and Pozzovivvo also motioning to attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-11.jpg

All this aggressive riding has had a dramatic affect on Pirazzi's lead. From 10 minutes, to now less than 1! The finish is tantalisngly close, but oh so far away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-12.jpg

Together with Valls and Intxausti, Marquez has gotten a gap on the peloton. He seems to be riding off to GC victory in impressive fashion.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-13.jpg

But what of the stage? It's final kilometre time for Pirazzi as he clings on, with Martin chasing him down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Stefano Pirazzi is going to do it. He wins the stage after a tremendous solo ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Martin's aggression finally paid off today as he takes 2nd, and look set to bounce back up the GC. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/san.png Marquez comes in 3rd on the stage with Intxausti, while Valls cracked a little at the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran are next. With some generous time gap decisions meaning they have the same time as Valls infront of them, and Reis, Duarte, Pozzovivvo, Herrada, Shikai, Signorini and Brenes behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino5-17.jpg

They failed to take the fight to Marquez, but do complete the podium. Martin bounces back up to 4th, with just 4 seconds separating 4th to 7th. Valls was not favoured by those time gaps and is 7th, behind Reis and Pozzovivvo. Intxausti, Shikai and Duarte will complete the Top 10. Which also means that Reis is the best young rider, ahead of Shikai.

Marquez unsurprisingly takes out the Points competiton, but loses the King of the Mountains jersey to Pirazzi! Rolland picked up enough to climb to 3rd, while Rosa and Le Bon's efforts are rewarded with 4th and 5th.

Shimano won the teams classification, ahead of Euskaltel and Meiji.
