Monte Bondone will be the site of the first summit finish of this year's race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-1.jpg

All good races start with a crash, right? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Valls are down, but look ok. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Ortega is injured though, and won't be able to support Uran on the climbs - for today at least.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-2.jpg

In a separate incident, later in the stage, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Rodríguez crashed out of the tour.

Hi Bakari.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-3.jpg

Bye Bakari.

First dropped, and not going to be making the time limit.

We did have a 3 man breakaway but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Koch and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa_kor.png Lee evidently didn't recon the stage, and were back in the peloton by the time the summit of the first big Cat 1 climb was reached.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Mestre knows a climb when he sees one, and takes full points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-4.jpg

The peloton gathered the remainder, while Mestre went on to take the intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Von Hoff dashed clear for 2nd, so look out for him on the race's sprint stage.

But by the time we reached the Cat 2 climb, Mestre's time in the sun was over. Indosat have been working hard through the day - so no concerns of injury for Intxausti - and hot on their heels has been pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gen.png Rolland. Leading from the front, to do Generali proud.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Signorini picked up 18 KoM pts across the first two climbs, which trumps the 16 of Mestre. Still 20 on the line for the winner of the stage though and, spoiler alert, it won't be either of them in the jersey at the end of the night.

Joined by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Claerebout, with Intxausti amongst the many team leaders also near the front, Indosat have set it up nicely as we start the 20km climb of Monte Bondone.

4km in, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Martin is the first to strike.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/san.png Marquez follow, but Denifl isn't ready yet. So he gets teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Kiserlovski to chase after them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-7.jpg

The Croat keeps threatening to catch them, but they just stay out of reach. The pace is too high for an attacking pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Pozzovivo to get a gap - except when the Euskaltel domestiques can't hold the wheel, giving him and Kiserlovski an inadvertent lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-8.jpg

Into the last 10km, the leading trio have just 20 seconds on a much-reduced peloton - if the other team leaders jump across now, they would certainly be in an advantageous position against our leaders.

But the elastic starts to break, Kiserlovski can't drive on forever, and the gap goes out above 44 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis sees the danger and leads the chase, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl on the back of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-10.jpg

They eke out a slight gap over the other contenders: Intxausti, Valls, Pozzovivvo, Frank, Shikai, Duarte - and Kiserlovski still.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-11.jpg

The gaps stays around 45 seconds, but there are no more attacks. Running down is the road to the finish, and at 4km to go Uran fancies his chances of a stage win and tests out his rivals.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-12.jpg

This is too much for Martin but also widens the gap. Denifl and Reis now 1'30 behind the front, the rest at just over 2 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-13.jpg

The stage is between Uran and Marquez then, but they start bluffing in the final kilometre, and back comes Martin!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-14.jpg

Or maybe it wasn't a bluff. Uran has no response as the sprint begins, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/san.png Florentino Marquez leaps away for a surprise victory!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-15.jpg

With time bonuses, a 20 second gain is exactly what he needs - and the race lead is his by 1 second.

Denifl takes 4th, at 1'14 to Marquez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-16.jpg

And a poor finale for Intxausti. While Pozzovivvo, Valls and Shikai finish at 1'58, he has faded to a loss of 2'30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Trent/ino2-17.jpg

Marquez snaps up the Point and KoM lead too, while Rafael Reis is the lead young rider.
