The 3rd week starts with hilly terrain even though it`s not the toughest finish. Still the puncheurs might want to take todays stage while the GC riders need to be concentrated to avoid stupid time loss.
Some such as Spilak or Taaramae might even attack Andy Schleck on a stage like this.
But it`s also a big opportunity for a breakaway and no less than 11 riders decide to get into it.
Formolo
Rosskopf
Stachowiak
Vorobev
Mollema
Poljanski
Kreuziger
Squire
Feng
Coppel
Kruijswijk
And unfortunately also a crash in a sharp corner.
Bookwalter, Burke, Belkov, La Lavandier, van Zyl, Smit, Danacik and Gerts on the tarmac.
Last one can`t continue the race and abandons. All others back in the peloton just a bit later.
Vesuvio worked the first half of the stage and kept the gap at about 2min surprisingly!
Now on the hillier part Orange takes over as Sicard apparently plans something.
Meanwhile Coppel takes the first two KoM sprints and climbs a bit in the mountain ranking.
Actually he also takes the next one as well.
Orange only lasted short as Vesuvio was back in front quickly controlling the situation for Andy Schleck.
On the final Cat.3 when the gap to the break was down to 70s an attack by Ponzi and right behind him Bakelants follows.
So is I-Gen but it`s not Spilak. Instead Lecuisinier gets the freedom to attack! Interesting move but Dombrowski and Sicard quickly chase him down.
The big move came on top only.
Sicard attacks followed by Spilak and also Demare joins this move. He could wait for the sprint but with Ponzi/Bakelants and leftovers of the break in front, he wants to become active himself.
Yet again though Vesuvio/Dombrowski make it difficult to open a gap.
Ponzi and Bakelants in the meantime are with the breakaway. 55s to the peloton and the last 9km are mainly downhill!
Not a good situation for Abal. As only real GC rider in 14th position he lost contact on that climb. He surely is no perfect puncheur but this was surprising nevertheless.
Flamme Rouge and from now it`s a 1km ramp to the finish with an average of 6,3%.
Ponzi and Bakelants clearly the favourites here with Coppel, Kruijswijk, Formolo and Rosskopf being the only remaining breakaway riders with them.
Kreuziger, Stachowiak and Mollema lost contact in the descent while the others are all back in the peloton already.
In there Spilak still hasn`t given up yet and often was a few meters ahead of the peloton. But always a strong Dombrowski closed the gap.
Behind those two Kritskiy, Phinney, Goos, Keizer, Taaramae, Arndt, Sicard, Wellens, Schleck, Lecuisinier etc.
Tough to open gaps here.
As expected a fight between Ponzi and Bakelants.
At the moment the Italian looks stronger having a small gap in the uphill sprint.
And he can keep that gap until the line. Big win for Kenya of course. Well done to them.
Bakelants in 2nd with a decent result but he surely wanted more.
Coppel also having a decent race so far in his home GT. He takes 3rd after gapping the others.
Rosskopf, Kruijswijk and Formolo in the next positions while the peloton came in with +1'13.
Kritskiy takes the sprint ahead of Spilak and Phinney but in fact all are within a rather big group of 35 riders.
Biggest loser today Abal who was couple groups behind. In the end he is losing ~5min just like Aru, Pantano Gomez, Kirsch in a group of sprinters and helpers.
