It`s day 13 and potentially the queen stage already. At least one of the top3 stages here with the long climb up Col du Tourmalet in the end. 19km with an average of 7,6% and more than 2000m different in altitude.
Earlier already the Col du Soulor with 12km and 7,2% and the shortest but also steepest Col de Marie Blanque early on.
The first two will surely start to exhaust the riders while the final climb is crucial and having good legs today can be a game changer.
7 riders want to take a prestigious win here and hence join the breakaway.
Meier
Galiev
Sakalou
Novikov
Feng
Lammertink
Kochetkov
Tinkoff being the biggest team sending one of theirs into the group today. Kritskiy might need Novikov later similar as Dombrowski cooperated with Kennaugh yesterday for Pendletons.
All other top GC rider teams decide to keep all the support around their leaders today.
Early on some riders seem to struggle. Biggest names are Kristoff and Wippert. Tough day also for the gruppetto.
Novikov seems to aim the KoM as well despite not having any points so far.
Behind him Sakalou, Galiev, Meier, Feng, Lammertink and Kochetkov in this order.
Mid stage attack with 68km to go just before the second climb.
Formolo and Panayotov are both no danger with 29 and 39min behind in the GC.
A good opportunity for them to try something.
Behind them couple other riders try to follow:
Hoem
Ponzi
Kebede
Kruijswijk
Ponzi as top20 rider and just 13min in the GC could become a bit of a danger for some riders.
But for now the peloton is allowing them a 1'30 gap. This is for all but Kebede and Kruijswijk, who are caught again just like Kochetkov from the former break.
The remaining 6 in front are 2min ahead of the latest attackers.
Once again Novikov on top as first yet again having a decent gap. Sakalou solo as 2nd already 2 corners behind while Ponzi is up to 3rd after parts of the break were caught.
Panaytov, Galiev, Formolo and Meier as last riders over the line.
Though Ponzi proves to be the strongest today which is surprising a bit. He joins Novikov and Sakalour in the descent!
Panaytov 40s behind with Galiev another 50s.
The others are 2min in total with the peloton just 45s behind them.
The "peloton" or actually a group of 64 riders remaining has reached the foot of Col du Tourmalet. I-Gen already with Lecuisinier in the working position as also Novak, who is doing an excellent job as well.
They are catching up to leftovers of the break as also later attackers Hoem and Formolo.
Only 4 riders left in front with a 2min gap as Panaytov joined the trio.
With Lecuisinier working on the uphill section it isn`t a big surprise to see a huge split in the peloton. 19 riders in the favourite group only:
Spilak
Lecuisinier
Novak
Schleck
Suaza
Dombrowski
Phinney
Morizot
Sicard
Manfredi
Abal
Kritskiy
Ignatenko
Taaramäe
Barguil
Henao Montoya
Arndt
Wellens
Keizer
in this order more or less.
This means Bakelants will clearly lose his GC spot today as he struggles.
Also LLS, Goos, König, Quintana, Nerz, Bennett, Faiers, Aru etc. with him in the second group.
The gap in between is still quite small but another acceleration of some riders in front will extend it. Those are:
Dombrowski
Schleck
Phinney
Sicard
Abal
with
Lecuisinier following and keeping contact this way as Spilak is behind him together with Suaza.
This also was the end of the breakaway while Faiers, Nesset, Kangert and couple more try to jump from the later group to the main favourite group.
In the end though they only jump to the dropped riders from there.
Within those Wellens and Keizer.
In front though two riders going all-in trying to gap the others.
Schleck and Dombrowski already tried it yesterday but lost their advantage again in the descent. Today it`s only uphill remaining and hence Spilak/Taaramae and the others are forced to react quickly.
For now Barguil is chasing with Taaramae and Phinney right behind. Also Ponzi still there after just being caught.
Then with a 5s gap Lecuisinier chasing for Spilak with Sicard, Abal, Kritskiy, Henao Montoya, Arndt and Panaytov still there.
Here the full situation.
Taaramae and Phinney are together as first chasers, while Spilak seems to struggle. Or it was Lecuisinier, who couldn`t help him as much as hoped as Spilak is taking over now in the next group, where his lieutnant can`t follow.
Further behind Wellens is chasing as also Keizer. Both solo after dropping the Faiers group.
Goos, still a top10 in the GC for now a bit later with the support of team mate Aru, while Suaza as last man with Schleck has done his job and drops behind those.
Bakelants in the first real group but seeing Bewley also in there shows that the pace clearly can`t be that high.
Schleck in his own world here. Just like in past seasons he shows to be the superior climber. Dombrowski though struggling a bit today as Taaramae is almost up to him.
Phinney already 1'30 behind and just seconds ahead of Spilak. But by the look of it the Maillot Jaune will change significantly here.
No time for celebration as every second counts.
Andy takes the big win on the Col du Tourmalet and might get the lead as well.
Dombrowski in 2nd with yet another fantastic performance just a bit ahead of Taaramae. All 3 have beaten Spilak a few times now already and hence Team I-Gen need to consider some other tactics in the 3rd week.
The gap to schleck was a bit over 1min and hence the Vesuvio rider takes the GC lead. But both follow on the podium as the gap to Spilak is bigger!
Phinney in the end caught by them but it`s 3'16 already. A few seconds more for Spilak/Kritskiy/Sicard. Though while the others likely can live with that time, Spilak must be disappointed.
Abal with a solid 9th ahead of Wellens, who recovered nicely towards the end. Still we are in the +5min area already.
Henao Montoya just outside the top10 a few seconds down.
Barguil, Arndt, Lecuisinier next.
Still ahead of Keizer at 6'18, who had a bad day clearly coming in together with Ponzi.
Faiers, Nesset, Kolesnikov a bit later ahead of König and Goos.
Bakelants is losing 13min in the end and this should be the end of his GC run.
Last but not least 13 riders over the time limit. Kristoff being the biggest name after his early struggle.
Also Jayco`z with 3 riders and Metinvest, Pokerstars with 2 each are hit.
