The 12th stage and the first HC climb I think. The Port de Bales might not the the toughest and having the long descent in the end might lead to some groups coming into the finish, but it still is a long climb with some high slopes. Hence having a bad moment here and you quickly are way down in the GC.
GC wise Spilak is here to defend his lead while Schleck, Dombrowski, yesterdays winner Taaramae or someone else are trying to attack him.
Quite a big breakaway with 11 riders in it.
Grmay
Simon
Vorobev
De Gendt
Chevrier
Curfs
Pantano Gómez
Kennaugh
Hepburn
Lammertink
Salcone
A couple of them like Grmay, Pantano Gomez or Kennaugh in especially might either be here for a later relay station or aiming the KoM jersey!
While I-Gen is the team working behind trying to keep the gap at around 3min only, it`s Grmay showing biggest interest here and takes the first two KoM sprints. The other share it well and this time Kennaugh in 2nd ahead of Curfs, Pantano and Simon.
Hepburn and Vorobev the first to struggle with keeping contact to the group.
A bit later also Lammertink, De Gendt and Salcone losing contact on the upcoming Cat.2 which is won by Curfs ahead of Grmay.
Full control by I-Gen in the peloton. Spilak riding safely in 4th position having Bouet, Coppel and Novak ahead working for him.
World Champion Andy Schleck sitting right behind him and with a HC rated climb now, this might become a thrilling fight between those and quickly the stronger team mates are send to the front.
Novak-Vasyliv for I-Gen and Suaza for Vesuvio and sometimes even Camier for Bouygues.
Half way up the climb the strongest of the break have gained a little bit again and are ~4'30 ahead.
Grmay leading most times with Curfs, Kennaugh and Simon being with him.
Pantano Gomez surprisingly struggling solo behind while Chevrier has lost a bit more ground already.
In the peloton Lecuisinier also took over working for his leader Spilak. This is obviously a huge difference to Novak/Vasyliv. First being dropped now after all his work. Also other GC riders such as König struggling at the end. But while for now the pace wasn`t too fast for many, this attack should lead to another acceleration.
Dombrowski with the first big move 4km before the top!
Lecuisinier and Suaza immediately highered the pace. But in the end they just cut a hole into the peloton.
A group of 5 with a small gap a bit behind Dombrowski:
Spilak
Lecuisinier
Schleck
Suaza
Taaramäe
Then some riders try to jump to them. First is Keizer, then Sicard, Faiers, Bakelants.
Others such as Kritskiy, Henao Montoya, Karnulin, Sanchez Gil, Abal, Ponzi, Kirsch, Wellens with them.
König, Kunshi, Kolesnikov, Bennett, Nerz. Arndt, Kangert, Quintana follow in the next group 40s behind.
Closer to the top a long line.
Dombrowski still solo in between the leaders and the favourites.
Then the 5 rider group around Spilak/Taaramae and Schleck.
Keizer still in between being 20s behind them and 12s ahead of the group of 11 with all other big names.
Actually not all! Taylor Phinney missed the moves! He sits in the König/Quintana/Nerz group which is already 2'30 behind having no chance against the stronger leaders in front.
While Kritskiy and Keizer made contact to the Spilak group, another attack could quickly see them struggle again.
Schleck attacks the Maillot Jaune!
If he can get to Dombrowski, this would be a huge duo and a big danger for Spilak.
Abal and Sicard also on their move to the front as they gapped the remaining favourites such as Wellens, Henao Montoya, Faiers, Bakelants, Ponzi, LLS, Karnulin or Kirsch.
Bigger news though that Spilak lost the virtual lead. And huge move for Dombrowski. He is up tp his team mate Kennaugh and has big support now.
Finally a media sign by Phinney! Awful day it seems. Good for him he still has Polanc with him but he could need Pantano Gomez a lot more, who is still further in front in the splitted breakaway area.
That said, Phinney is a bit lucky to get support of Vesuvio. Both Aru and Goos are in there and while not going all-in, they at least help to keep the pace decent.
Nerz/Arndt, König, Kunshin/Kolesnikov, Quintana other riders to take profit from this.
Grmay being solo now after taking the 20 point on top and hence will be rewarded with the KoM jersey tomorrow.
Behind him Curfs still ahead of Kennaugh/Dombrowski.
Then together Simon and Schleck with the Taaramae/Spilak group coming over it together.
In the descent Schleck proves to be faster than Dombrowski and joins him. But you see it in the background. Group Spilak is even faster and also coming back. But it showed one thing today. Both Schleck and Dombrowski might be able to gain time on later stages with an uphill finish! But it also showed that Lecuisinier is the very best support rider Spilak could get.
And actually the French is still proving this. Even on the downhill he forces some gaps. Behind him Spilak and Taaramae with Kritskiy a bit behind.
Keizer already was known as awful descender and he is together with Abal, Sicard and Suaza as also breakaway guys Simon and Kennaugh.
1'20 behind those group Wellens, Bakelants, Faiers, Henao Montoya.
Schleck and Dombrowski are caught with 5km to go! Lecuisinier with a huge performance here and Spilak, Taaramae as also Kritskiy being back in business.
Only Grmay still in front as also Curfs is with them. 70s might be enough for a stage win even!
50s for the Keizer/Sicard group while the next is closing. Only 40s now for them.
Big stage for Kenya. Grmay not only taking the KoM jersey but also todays stage. Congratulation for the team.
Then Schleck and Dombrowski at least being rewarded for their attack a bit. They take the remaining bonus seconds ahead of Spilak, who stays in the lead though. 12s to Schleck only, 14s to Taaramae and also Dombrowski at +30 is very close.
Group Wellens indeed was able to catch up to Keizer/Abal. Quite a pity for some managers but good for others of course. 1min only their loss to the very best.
Bakelants in there as well and still in GC contention as 5th and 2'19 behind.
Biggest loser clearly Phinney. He comes in at 3'06, which is a bit more than 2min on his direct rivals. With him Goos and Aru.
Another 32s behind them the remaining GC riders Nerz/Arndt, König, Ponzi, Karnulin etc.
