Stage 9 and it`s a day for the GC riders again. Or at least they need to be careful to avoid a time loss while the stage itself might be more for the puncheurs. Though also riders such as Spilak might try something to get the Maillot Jaune or at least gaining time on other GC riders.
The last climb is really steep in the beginning and end but afterwards a flat section to the finish.
3 riders in the breakaway:
Squire
Curfs
Smit
Curfs twice in 3rd at the opening two KoM sprints while the other two share the points equally.
And just before the first longer Cat.2 climb more riders have joined them:
Morizot
Kireva
Mullen
Though first Curfs is dropped and just at the start of the Cat.2 also Kireva and Morizot struggle already. Hence it`s only the remaining 3 really in front.
Phinney is the leader here due to the time trials. But it`s I-Gen riding a high pace with Novak as their worker right now.
And hence the peloton is down to 67 riders before the top is reached. More important though that the breakaway is caught! No rider in front and most sprinters are dropped by now.
Cat.2 Novak10 Grmay8 Choi6 Coppel4 Spilak2
And just a bit later the Cat.3 also dominated by working riders:
Cat.3 Vasyliv6 Novak4 Pantano Gómez2
55km left and some riders apparently try to attack. First is a bit surprising but probably wants to have a gap before the strongest puncheurs accelerate.
Demare
Boom
Nesset
Lammertink
They quickly open a decent gap while Kenya, Orange support RBC and I-Gen behind. The high pace though sees some riders being dropped including long time worker Novak but also wildcard climber Anacona.
Nesset is more a climber than a puncheur. Hence his attempt earlier was a bit desperate and he is also the first to be caught again with 18km to go. The other three still have 1'10.
And while the gap continues to drop to 50s it`s the top puncheur himself on a short descent just ahead of the final climb.
Bakelants in the attack with 10km to go.
Behind him immediately the Maillot Jaune and others:
Phinney
Dombrowski
Sanchez Gil
Ponzi
The high pace of I-Gen though caught them quickly again and also the gap to the trio ahead is at 45s only when the steep climb starts. 5km left and sections of more than 10%.
Demare, Boom and Lammertink still hope to make it today.
But unfortunate for them the peloton accelerates another time with Bakelants attacking a second time.
Dombrowski again being focussed on him following.
Also Sicard, Phinney, Ponzi follow while other teams chase behind. Goos for Vesuvio leading hte peloton while also Chiarello for Movistar is helping.
Bakelants passing Demare/Boom and goes into the lead.
Lammertink a bit behind with Ponzi chasing heavily.
Then Dombrowski/Sicard just a bit ahead of the peloton with all other favourites.
Strugglin a bit in the big group are GC riders Keizer, König, Quintana or Nerz. Also Kritskiy could surely be in a better position.
The high pace behind does not allow a too big gap to the puncheurs. But it`s still Bakelants going over the line first.
23s later Ponzi as next and then the favourites follow with the same gap in a group of 34 riders.
Goos as perfect support rider here for Schleck. He avoids a gap to stronger puncheurs such as Spilak, Phinney or Sicard today.
Though the pure puncheurs were even stronger. Bakelants with his 2nd stage win already can celebrate.
Ponzi in 2nd a few seconds behind wasn`t able to follow the Belgium.
Only 12 riders then in the next group as over the top a few splits happened.
Spilak takes the bonus seconds but 1'04 behind Bakelants! All the best GC riders in that group except Kritskiy, who was indeed badly placed today! Surprising riders in there are Karnulin for Metinvest and Abal for Mobistar, who normally does not like the hilly stages that much.
The gap also means that Bakelants is the new GC leader and Phinney runner-up.
Kangert, and Arndt lose ~30s to the favourites while Wellens, Lecuisinier and Faiers follow another 13s later. Not their best day here.
Henao Montoya, Kritskiy, Nerz, König and already Becherovka sprinters Bewley/Vesely in the next group. About ~1min time loss for them.
Worse though for Keizer. The Aegon captain is losing 3min to the favourites. Also Quintana/Choi for Orange with a day to forget. Another group later! All riders who prefer the mountains over hills though and might get this time back later.
