Tour de France - Stage 2
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0043.jpg

The sprinter teams surely can`t await the start of todays stage. But first some quick look of similar duels between todays top sprinters pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Bewley.

First last years TdF. All 3 were taking part and in the end Swift and Bewley both won 3 stages while Degenkolb went home with empty hands. Though a) he improved in the off-season and b) he has Mohs with him in 2016! Kristoff was also there last year but neither could grab a stage and also is probably a bit behind the top3!

Then check this years Tour of Qatar. Again all of them were taking part! It was a first show of the new Pokerstars domination. With ease Degenkolb took 2 stage wins and the GC with the support of Mohs. Swift got 1 stage while Bewley didn`t any but was most consistent. All 3 on the podium in past 2 seasons.

Trend is showing that Pokerstars are the sprinters to beat but both Bewley and Swift will challenge them a lot! Then there are Kristoff, Ciolek, Vantomme and several more, who already have won big races and also already did beat those 3!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0045.jpg

Special mention for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Vassdål for the first attack of the 2016 Tour de France!
He is later joined by young cobbler pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Grand and time trialist pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Olman, who didn`t have a good day yesterday being only 34th but still best placed of those three.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0049.jpg

Good news for Becherovka. Right now they can relax in the peloton as the main work is done by Pokerstars (Sieberg) and Aegon (Van der Sanden, Frison) while I-Gen doing the needed stuff for GC leader Coppel (Bouet, Bernauedeau)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0056.jpg

Quite a pan flat stage and hence easy to control for the peloton. The gap is up to 7min with 100km to go and here the race organisers have even found a small "hill" to reward the first KoM points of the Tour. The Grieg Eftel rider takes the points ahead of the others and will wear the jersey tomorrow!

A bit later Olman takes the sprint ahead of Vassdal.

And seeing the gap it`s also time to get stronger riders to the front. Becherovka as well working now with Habtom and Danacik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0065.jpg

It was almost impossible for the break to take todays sprint opener! And once the teams did send some of their strongest riders chasing (Keizer, Koep, Boom - Gallego Martin - König) the gap melted fast and was almost gone with 5km to go! Perfect timing by the sprinter teams even though some surely don`t like to see their GC rider working there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0067.jpg

3,3km remaining and the break is just caught now. The three chasing teams also form todays sprint trains of which Aegon looks strongest right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0079.jpg

Not ideal to use Van der Sanden as first leadout after letting him work since early morning in the wind. The result is that Becherovka goes past them on the right side of the road while also Pokerstars is up to them but with serious gaps in between their riders! And surprisingly the order is Kluge-Degenkolb-Mohs!

On the left isolated but still well placed boeckmans, Ciolek and Maksimov, while Guardini also showing himself now behind Goss.

Also Chen and Meyer slowly come to the end of the trains while Kristoff is still struggling...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0085.jpg

Apparently Mohs was supposed to leadout Degenkolb though! He just was badly placed behind him it seems, which also might explain the gaps in the train! Now he is in the front starting the sprint with 1,2km to go. Though Degenkolb not following really!

Similar scenario with Vesely-Bewley and Sbaragli-Swift. All with small gaps to their final leadouts and in especially Swift is dangerously blocked now in the middle next to/behind boeckmans and Ciolek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0090.jpg

400m and still Mohs leading. Good for the blocked sprinters that the road widens here. Degenkolb and Maksimov on the left. Then boeckmans and Ciolek with Meyer and Goss behind.

In the middle Swift still a bit behind Sbaragli with Vantomme/Guardini behind.

Then on the right Bewley.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0094.jpg

200m and Mohs with an incredible 1km sprint already still having a gap but it`s getting smaller and Swift/Bewley come with high pace now on their side. Also Ciolek through the middle having the perfect slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TdF/mg2016_tdf_02_PCM0096.jpg

But the long sprint is rewarded today! From a chaotic sprint train, Mohs takes the perfect result and surprises all other teams. Not sure if planned like this or just improvised?

Behind him an incredibly close finish. Ciolek and Degenkolb a bit ahead of the others and hence a full German podium today! First though takes the advantage of the slipstream and avoids a Pokerstars 1-2.

Even closer the next 3 riders where Swift takes inches only ahead of Boeckmans and Vantomme.

Goss and a disappointed Bewley follow while Maksimov and Meyer surely can live with their top10 a lot better.

Guardini just outside as also Chen and Kristoff. Except for Chen they surely had hoped for quite a bit better.

Coppel was expected to stay in the lead today and with the biggest "threats" not scoring bonus seconds today, he is still having a 20+ seconds gap, which could lead to a nice first week for I-Gen here.
