Stage 6: mountain, 215.2 km, Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux - Risoul

A relatively easy day in the saddle today for most of the race. Only one climb of the day, but that's a huge one and directly at the end into Risoul. Will that hurt pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney? The profile should fit him well, and on a normal day the race should be pretty easy to defend.

That said, who is expecting a normal day in PCM? Especially pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Madrazo has to make a move soon if he wants to climb up the rankings.

This day, without having a KOM ranking and with it's profile looks very disappealing for potential breakaway riders. Still a group comes away pretty early:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau68.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Chevrier
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Scheit
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Manfred
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Hivert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lammertink
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Minnard
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Smit
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Kolar
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Tanovitchii

Maybe the guys out there can profite from the selective stage 4 and therefore less firepower in the pack? Or from a distractive tactic, cause nobody needs to chase and RBC might doesn't want to?

The peloton, more precise RBC, doesn't want to really let them go far away though, and keep their advantage at 2 minutes. Hard work done by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Pichon and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Jensen early.

200 km - 2'00
175 km - 2'15
150 km - 2'00

You won't really understand that, cause the best rider in that group - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Hivert - is over half an hour down on the yellow jersey. Do they want another stage win that hard and burn their riders for that?

125 km - 2'00

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Hughes now working too already.

100 km - 2'15
80 km - 2'30
60 km - 2'20
50 km - 2'00

Crashes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Grand and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer on the way, both not able to make it back into the peloton due to the high pace. The full RBC team only excluding pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Pantano Gómez now chasing.

Meanwhile the group rolling through the uncontested sprint.

With 40 kilometers to go, the distance between the groups is still two minutes, we cross a bridge with the peloton in sight for the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau69.jpg

It starts the part where the real racing should've started: A smaller bu,py part for 20 kilometers and then another 20 kilometers full of pretty steep climbing madness.

30 km - 1'30
25 km - 1'15
20 km - 1'30

These kilometers will hurt in the legs a little bit more than we expected. Next bridge, next part of the race:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau70.jpg

The climbing starts around next corner. Will RBC hold on to the pace or fade early? 13.5 left and only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Elissonde and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Pantano Gómez left. Looks dangerous.

In the break though...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau71.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Kolar comes to the front to put up the pace as the gap goes beyond the one minute mark. But more sooner than later they're caught.

But much more interestingly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Pantano Gómez seems to really have it in him today. The former Boss rips the peloton apart by increasing the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau72.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Herrada had to leave a gap, so that only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Taaramäe are with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney right now.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Tenorio...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau73.jpg

... and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Kritskiy go after that, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl have to chase in the pack.

Just as it's all about coming back together we have the next attack:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau74.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Taaramäe goes into the offense. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney is the first to respond and the only guy who made it. He is suffering on the Estonians backwheel though!

Current racing situation:

Taaramae, Phinney
Madrazo +'15
Tenorio +'29
Kritskiy +'39
Denifl, Velits, Bongiorno, Berhane, Wellens, Pantano +'57
Keizer, Cattaneo +1'16
Faiers +1'37
Brambilla, Bennett +1'45
Abal +1'56
Group Ruijgh, Kudus +2'04

The race situation doesn't change very much. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney though was able to recover well and took a turn as well. But the gaps stayed the same, so with 700 meters to go...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau75.jpg

the stage win should be between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Taaramäe and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney.

And the...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau76.jpg

...Estonian brilliantly shows who was the strongest today. That also pretty surely means that he'll move up to second overall. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney only second but made another huge step forward by putting some time into several opponents on a stage where he was attacked for the first time.

The third place goes to...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau77.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Madrazo over half a minute down. His fellow countryman pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Tenorio a couple of seconds behind him in fourth.

Then the next bigger group of 7 comes in, one and a half minutes down on the winner:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau78.jpg

In splits it's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Wellens, todays biggest loserpcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Bongiorno, wildcard guy pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane and a strong upcoming pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Keizer.

Lateron some other contenders for minor places come in:

Cattaneo, Bennett + 3'
Faiers, Kudus + 4'
Rujgh, Nesset + 5'
Novak, Kunishin + 6'
Formolo + 7'

Surely most of these, especially the Orange leader, disappointed with today. But the big victory of today goes to...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau79.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Rein Taaramäe of Boygues Telecom. Meanwhile they extended their Team Classifications lead with this result as well, congratulations!

Now let's go further to the final results:
