Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Category: PT 8 Stages terrain: mountain + long TT France
Stage 5: hilly, 172.2 km, Allevard-les-Bains - Sallanches
This is the stage where you have to attack Phinney in numbers. His team is not the best to control this type of terrain. But then again the terrain should suit his pretty well with his flat ability and sprint and downhill skills. The only GC contenders that should be rated as good as him on a normal day are Madrazo and Taaramäe; the latter surely is the top favourite here.
Even more likely, given the lack of hilly strength of the main contenders teams, is a successful early attack of the break or the real puncheurs though, that are all far behind already. Such as Levarlet, Meyer or former polka-dot carrier Villella.
Another interesting question will be whether Ruijgh might fall back after his superb ride yesterday.
We start you of with the break of the day, containing:
Kastrantas
Mollema
Ngock Ngue
Simon
Moazemi
Vosekalns
No direct threats for the KOM jersey of Ruijgh in there, but Simon and Moazemi already scored some points worth a mention. All riders over half an hour back, the best placed in the GC is Vosekalns in 52.
They quickly built a lead of over 3 minutes after 30 kilometers. Rolling over the uncontested intermediate sprint it has even grown to 4 with 125 to go.
Sprint Simon6 Kastrantas4 Moazemi2
The same procedure on the 2nd category climb Cote de Rafforts with 100 to go, no competition for the points there.
Cat.2 Moazemi10 Simon8 Ngock Ngue6 Kastrantas4 Vosekalns2
Looks like a solid harmonic ride so far for the break. But same goes for the pack, where mostly Becherovka, BPost & Shimano control the pace surprisingly.
From 90 kilometers on the pace settles back to 3 minutes difference until we reach the hilly circuit around the Cote de Domancy with 75 to go. On that first passage 3rd category climb...
... Moazemi shows some interest in the points rewarded and takes them. A long way over the next days into polka dot?
Cat.3 Moazemi6 Vosekalns4 Ngock Ngue2
60 kms - 3'00
Simon really in trouble already. He's the first...
...caught guy with 40 to go.
Cat.3 Moazemi6 Vosekalns4 Kastrantas2
The Iranian extending his points count. Meanwhile Mollema lost contact as the next guy from the break.
30 km - 2'30
Another guy who has to pay his tribute is...
... Ruijgh, who lost contact on the third-last passage. There go the GC dreams. Same problems for Nesset too.
At the penultimate climb the peloton slows completely down for no reason, so that the break extends their lead back to 4 minutes. The dutchman still in between both groups.
Cat.3 Moazemi6 Kastrantas4 Ngock Ngue2
Then we have some action time. As the victory is pretty safe for the break the Greek goes on the attack:
Cameroon's champ Ngock Ngue goes hard after him.
The race situation with 10 km to go and right before the final passage of the Cote :
Kastrantas
Ngock Ngue + '51
Vosekalns, Moazemi +1'57
Mollema (yes, still!) +4'29
Peloton +4'51
Group Ruijgh +6'39
And, sadly, we have no action at all there. The gaps between the groups increase, only Mollema gets caught after a long fight by Pichon, who leads the peloton with a slow pace.
But wait, right over the top this stage might have an exciting point:
White jersey Wellens surprisingly makes his move, not the guy we expected in the offense today. But we won't complain about that. Denifl though goes after him and tries to chase him down.
We should go back to the front now, where the Kastrantas has built a comfortable advantage of over one minute on the climb. Eventhough nobody comes close to him on the final descent, he is too exhausted to celebrate on the line.
A great victory for I-Gen on their way up the rankings. Second goes to...
... Ngock Ngue, way in front of the next couple. Out of these two...
... Vosekalns was stronger than Moazemi and beats him down the descent for third.
In behind the hard chase on the descent has caught Wellens and caused some...
...surprise splits. With Madrazo and Kritskiy on the wrong side of it!
Barguil takes P5, but do we have a gap that is big enough for different times? Most likely not, cause Vichot closed the gap with a furocious sprint for Cattaneo.
More riders, for example Ruijgh, far down. But more of that in the final classification after the winner's pic!
And indeed: It's not that much, but 22 seconds lost for the Kritskiy, Madrazo and Cattaneo. Many more for the likes of Ruijgh, Kunshin, Kruijswijk, Nesset and Brambilla.
The green jersey also changes shoulders from Impey to mighty Phinney, who looks on his way to a crazy amount of points out of this.
