Stage 3: bumpy, 218.5 km, Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne - Annonay Davézieux

On this day we're looking at a stage that is categorized as a flat stage. But, as said in the preview, we don't really believe in a pure sprinters finish. And we're not doing that for 2 reasons: Firstly there are two Cat.1 climbs on the way. And we're not talking about misplaced ones, but about the Col du Grand Cucheron and the Col du Granier. Secondly the sprinters will have some real trouble with the uprising finishing straight. So if the teams really can hold the peloton together for a punch sprint, that will suit the punchy sprinters more than the real ones.

Does that mean that we might see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Impey doubeling it up for Eritel? Possibly. Him and the couple of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu might be the outright favourites here, but don't count out the yellow jersey on a stage like this. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney might have all what it takes to win this stage if it's ridden foot on the gas.

Now let's start the racing!

Until the early slopes of the Col du Grand Cucheron no group can get away. Metinvest & Vesuvio make sure that it stays like that for a couple of minutes, until one rider is allowed to have a gap:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau26.jpg

Mountains leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Villella. When almost a group of 3 joins him he takes the big Cat.1 KOM, which extends his lead in that classification. Behind him some guys on the move to join him in his breakaway ambitions.

Cat.1
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Villella16
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Jérôme12
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Quevedo10

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Vichot6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Feng4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Senechal2

The peloton doesn't like these riders though and puts in a wild chase on the leading group of 5, that is now down to under a minute again:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Villella
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Quevedo
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Vichot
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Moazemi
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Jérôme

They decide the intermediate sprint though without competing:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Quevedo6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Villella4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Jérôme2

The peloton still agressive...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau27.jpg

...with the yellow jersey sitting in second position behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Teklit, who goes hard for his south african leader. They catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Villella, who dropped out of that leading group. Then they reduce the pace, happy with a 4 men break.

On the process though several riders were dropped off already:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coquard
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Van Poppel
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Samwel
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Bookwalter

Over the Mountain now we have the following race situation:

Vichot
Moazemi, Quevedo, Jerome +1'28
Peloton +5'31

Most of the distanced sprinters already far back, but still 131 kilometers to go. Over the top we've seen pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Vichot being by far the strongest, which means that he's got a decent advantage on all his opponents.

Cat.1
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Vichot16
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Moazemi12
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Quevedo10
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Jérôme8
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Hughes6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Jensen4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Elissonde2

He comes pretty close to the tired pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Villella, who'll have a hard day to recover for the next stages I guess.

Down the slopes we finally have a picture of the 4 breakaway riders together:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Quevedo
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Vichot
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Moazemi
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Jérôme

The race calms down quite a lot after that, it is controlled by RBC. They set up their riders in a calm and controlled chase, that firstly scratches the 3 minute mark at 60 kilometers to go. In the meantime some riders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Bookwalter and white jersey pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Wohler managed to come back to the peloton.

Shit! We have a...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau29.jpg

..crash in the later positions in the peloton, forcing the likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Abal, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Kiserlovski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Brambilla down. It's not going to be easy to come back after this, as the stage favourites started to care about the race again. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Van der Lijke, one of these, really struglled on the upper slopes and the descent of the second climb, not sure if he's going to be able to come back.

20 kilometers:

BotD
Peloton + 1'08
Group Abal + 4'10
Group Coquard, Cavendish + 11'29

And now it's PCT mountain goat pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane really dragging it for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Impey. But they need to inject some more pace, otherwise this will go to the break.

And there we go! Attack from...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau30.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Steven Kruijswijk with 10 kilometers to go. Can this be a real threat for the break and the peloton? Remember as well that he currently sits 9th overall!

Yes and no. He catches most of the breakaway, but then gets caught by himself with 6 to go. The only guy ahead still is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Vichot, and he is going strong. Still 48 seconds for 5.7 kilometers, it's starting to look good for the frenchman.

No leadouts in the peloton as the sprinters are just lined up behind a dragging pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Craven. But it's not gonna be enough with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Vichot still out of sight under the kite. This could be huge!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau31.jpg

The peloton now should be sprinting for silver: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Impey in the mix and perfectly positioned, so are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Oss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Bar and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis also involved but not looking as good as the others. No sign of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Van der Lijke though, the trouble on the climbs and after must've hurt him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau32.jpg

But now they see him and he is tiring. He's got 600 to go, the peloton is a whole 400 meters in behind. Come on Arthur!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau33.jpg

But this man is so cool he even celebrates 300 meters before the line, sure that he's going to win this. Great job Orange, with the fantastic plan of sending 2 men in the break which worked out perfectly.

Well at least you'd guess so as the sprinters are down quite a bit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau34.jpg

But especially pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Impey look fast and furious to zabel the leading frenchman who is dangerously slow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau35.jpg

But not today! A big one for the team that is batteling against relegation, and the confidence of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Arthur Vichot paid off in a superb win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau36.jpg

It is indeed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Impey who comes in second, right ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Oss, which together make a great looking top 6 for the day.

All in all a day that become as entartaining and uncertain as it was all day long. In the aftermaths though another day with many winners, only Vesuvio and Movistar can be really hurt by today. A home victory always tastes sweet, and so must do the green jersey for Eritel. Also another consistent day of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu, and all the other Top10 finishers of today surely couldn't have expected to land where they did today.
