Stage 2: TT, 52.1 km, Villié-Morgon - Bourg-en-Bresse

A long flat time trial: Who will be the next rider in yellow? And which of the GC contenders can already put themselves up the ladder for the general classification? Or can any specialist scratch this away from the GC contenders and make it a surprise win. Lot's of questions to ask on this stage 2, which should mostly be a 3-way battle between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Taaramäe and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Keizer.

It will be interesting to see additionally how the Stage Racers with a lower TT quality, like for instance pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl, can deal with the long ITT and how they'll come out of this for the upcoming mountain battle.

Who can ride the first interesting time?

Mr. Stars and Stripes is the first one to set some decent times on the checkpoints. The only comparable rider of the firsties is slower on every checkpoint, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Ford. So...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau14.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Bookwalter sets the first reasonable time with 1'10'41. That was 3'18 faster than the former provisional lead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Sirironnachai.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Ford is 25 seconds slower than him, so the Aussie that came only here for the TT won't score big time today.

Though we see a next rider with interesting checkpoints: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Quaade ties the time of Bookwalter at the first checkpoints. However,...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau15.jpg

...he ends up 31 seconds down in provisional 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Abal, who also lost time yesterday, comes in on provisional 4th 43 seconds down. For giving a relation, the provisional 5th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Reguigui is 2'40 down, so a 2 minute gap between #4 and #5 currently.

Then we have a long time of silence. Until the Top 50 we don't have anybody with dangerous time. Wait what? Daniel...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau16.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Teklehaimanot or PCT team Eritel seems like being on a run and beats pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Bookwalter by 2 seconds on the first checkpoint in Romanèche Thorins. Can he set up for a big surprise? In the meantime also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Kruijswijk interestingly near at this checkpoint.

But both fade the further into the race they get: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Teklehaimanot comes in with +1'02 in 5th currently, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Kruijswijk is even slightly down on him.

Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Martijn Keizer sets up for a new provisional lead. Can this already be the winning ride? Well pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Timofey Kritskiy is on par with him. Both have a clear advantage to the others on the current scorebord.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Tenorio already 10 seconds down in the meantime on the first checkpoint. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Taaramäe though only loosing 2 there.

But at the front it's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Keizer...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau17.jpg

...with leading times at all checkpoints. On the way to a big win? Not sure, cause there goes pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Timofey Kritskiy, who beats his time on the second chekpoint by 2 seconds. Will he spoil the party?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau18.jpg

But then we get news about an outstanding time at the first checkpoint. We have to doublecheck it a couple of times, but it seems to be true! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Taylor Phinney...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau19.jpg

...is a whole bunch of 20!!! sconds ahead on the first checkpoint. This looks like pure domination, he has to fade big time if that is not the winning ride. But then again, being so much faster than other specialists might be a hint for exactly that.

We'll come back on that later, cause now...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau20.jpg

...the flying dutchman pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Keizer crosses the line in 1'10'08, 32 seconds faster than the American TT champion.

He has to fear pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Kritskiy though, who is three seconds faster on the penultimate checkpoint. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Taaramäe meanwhile looking like coming 4th today, cause he's some seconds down on the couple and many seconds down to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney, who is absolutely on fire. The RBC superstar has increased his lead to a frightening 55 seconds to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Keizer at the second checkpoint in L'abergement-Clémenciat.

But let's move back forward to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Kritskiy...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau21.jpg

...who is on his final run-in of the last 5 kilometers. He's able to beat the Aegon leader by 4 seconds at the end of the day, which gives him the provisional lead. Only 2 riders should be able to danger him from now on, but one is unlikely to do that and one is very much looking like it.

Meanwhile we get some times from other contenders in:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec_svk.png Velits + 2'53
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Tenorio + 1'16
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl + 2'50

If you're asking yourself where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney is by the way: There...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau22.jpg

...overtaking some poor riders right behind the third checkpoint in Montracol, where he is 1'21 faster than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Kritskiy. Total domination.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Cattaneo comes in 9th currently after a disappointing ride, 1'43 down on the Russian. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Madrazo sorting himself right behind him.

The next contender to finish now is...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau23.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Rein Taaramäe. But the Estonian wasn't completely at his best, finishing 3rd at 33 seconds. Now let's focus on the big one:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau24.jpg

1'08'27. Are you kiddin me? That is 1'37. That's more than total domination. That's the stage victory and one leg stepping towards the overall victory already. How should beat him anywhere in this Dauphine?

Our last focus of the day will point at...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Dauphine/dau25.jpg

...yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Daryl Impey, who closes this race out with a mid-table time. He never was going to contend here, still a good day for the African PCT team again with that surprising Top10 by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Teklehaimanot.

But the real story of the day was the victory by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney, not pointing at that he won as he was the outright favourite. But the style and the dominance which he brought into this time trial and how he completely pulverized every other time was beyond any proposals. Now every other team that wants to have a shot on winning here needs to think on how to ride the american out of yellow & green. A tough job to do if pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney stays on this top form.
