Three teams, which would do well to get anything out of this race, start the race by making the break. The riders: Gebrezgabihier, Lee & Tusveld.
The peloton taking it easy. Taking in the sights!
We are now on to the final climb of the day. With the sprinter teams perhaps afraid of dropping their riders there is no hard chase of the break. Xero Racing p/b Octagon are the ones setting the pace.
16 KM to go - Peloton at 1'50
Tusveld crests the final climb and it is mostly downhill to the finish from here. He has a large gap back to the peloton and it is looking good for a surprise win. However, he will have to do it alone having dropped his partners.
On the descent the peloton ratchet up the pace. Jiatz can be seen here giving his all. But was it too little too late?
2 KM to go: Break at '47
With Tusveld ahead in the distance we see three sprint trains set up for Soupe, Avilla and Stauff respectively.
With under 1 KM to go Gavazzi is well into his sprint as the gap to the rider out front evaporates.
Can our solo attacker hold off the rest?
How about that for a backdrop!
Tusveld wins stage 1 of the Giro del Capo! If you can't compete in a bunch finish, get into the break and you never know! The Dutchman moves into the race lead.
Gavazzi just held off Avilla, who rounds out the podium, but winning the bunch sprint for second leaves a bittersweet taste.
Soupe didn't have it in the sprint and misses out on the top 10 while Kraftwerk finish with two in the top 5, what will Stauff make of that?
