We start here in Mexico with a 176km flat stage, featuring an early Category 4. My excitement cannot be contained, as we head towards what should be an inevitable sprint. And if it isn’t a sprint, then something has gone terribly wrong for the sprinter’s teams on this dry, windless day.

With little fanfare, a break of three riders is allowed to escape. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Hassan leading pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Helwani through the KoM, though it must be said that calling it a climb is being overly generous. As, if I’m honest, is even calling it a speedbump. In fact, there are no walls on route for the entire race. Clearly Mexico couldn’t afford to pay for them.

The first intermediate sprint would be somewhat contested, as the bonus seconds on offer meant it could help these riders compete for a good GC result. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Hassan once again lead over it ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Helwani, as we now headed into the 85km of the race in which nothing was expected to happen.

Indeed, as we reached the final intermediate sprint with 45km to go nothing had happened since the last sprint. And once again, the order of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Hassan, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman and finally pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Helwani was repeated. The gap to the peloton standing at a manageable 2’30.

The torturous 3% ramps near the top of the Cat 4 with 35km to go saw a surprise. Well, not really. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Hassan made it 4/4 in sprints for today and secured the KoM jersey for the next stage, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Helwani managed to beat pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman into second in the most exciting development of the stage so far.

But what’s this? With 7.5km pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Hassan and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman have accelerated just as the peloton was about to catch them, dropping pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Helwani in the process. And now they hold a 30 second advantage at this late stage.

However, with 5km to go the peloton finally decides to stop messing about and catches the break. Ticos Air, Spark and Podium Ambition all spotted at the front, working for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillén, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Thorsen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson respectively - with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling also hanging around.

With 3km to go, the trains for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Thorsen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson have both made a break for it - with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Salas also weirdly hanging around up front. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling have clocked what’s going on and tagged along, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Vanderaerden and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Drapac chasing behind.

As we hit 1.8km to go, it does seem like this is going to be a battle of the riders mentioned in the previous update, as well as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli who has now managed to get into the mix. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillén is behind, having difficulty following his leadout men.

At 1km to go the sprint is launched, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Soupe, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Drapac appearing to have the jump on everyone else. However, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillén has suddenly re-embraced the concept of a leadout, and is being dragged up the left hand side of the road at pace by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Cano.

With 400m to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Soupe begins to fade after delivering an excellent leadout, and it looks like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson vs pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Drapac for the stage win. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillén is coming like a rocket, but his positioning earlier on seems to have scuppered his chances of the win. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Thorsen look like they’ll be competing with him for 3rd.

No splits in the run-in by the looks of things, with the top 10 being rounded out by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Vanderaerden, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Nizzolo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff a non-factor, down in a disappointing 14th place.
