Last big chance for a GC attack as tomorrow we have the mountain TT. So it`s the last direct duel on the road here. The final climb is incredibly steep and could lead to lots of gaps. As the steepest sections are in the beginning and in the end, the possibility for early attacks are given and also some late moves should be expected. Several sections of 10+% in those areas. In total 12,8km with 8% in average.
To be fair, the gap between Gesink and the rest but also Pluchkin-Machado or podium and rest is rather big, hence it will be hard to shuffle the 1-2-3 here. But behind a lot of close fights.
Lecusinier in 4th just 2s ahead of Guldhammer.
Velits as 6th also just 4s ahead of Van Garderen even though the climbing advantage should be clearly on first. Nibali being ~1'20 down on both also in range to pass Van Garderen.
Then late in the top10 Van den Broeck must hope to go past puncheur Lutsenko. same probably goes for Uran or even Tenorio. Then several close fights for the top10-25 as usual.
Kind of a surprise today. While Alarcon tried to join the break early on, his attempt failed and in the successful group he is missing. Hence the 1 point differential to Chamorro could today increase and actually decide the KoM fight as the KoM shirt is definitely visible in there.
The 6 riders in total:
Chamorro
Kebede
Levarlet
Ndayisenga
Hoem
Boily
The peloton all day kept the gap at ~2min. eBuddy as usually controlling and not allowing breakaway points easily.
Then a crash behind. 4 riders hit. While Nascimento, Tratnik and Kneisky are quick on their bikes again, Saber has to abandon with injury. Bad luck for Oz as the final day could be another sprint stage.
Going up the Cat.2 the peloton has allowed a bit more gap. It`s up to 3min now but still full controll by eBuddy.
Easy 10 points for Chamorro as expected. This is a big step toward the win and could make it the 2nd GT KoM jersey for a wildcard team in a row!
Obviously also the Cat.3 was won by Chamorro!
This now needs Alarcon basically to win tomorrow and take at least 2 points today on the final climb to pass him.
14.4km left. Basically just the final climb and the gap is down to 90s.
Several riders attack behind but it`s more 2nd tier riders:
Morton
Bongiorno
Kolesnikov
Quintana
Olivier
Van der Velde, Majka and Stancu ahead of Gesink with Brambilla safely inside the pack as well.
A bit later first Penasa making it a 2nd Oz rider in the attack but on the steep sections early on the big riders go for it making it difficult for the earlier attackers to gain time:
Machado
Velits
Tenorio
and at least trying but caught by Stancu again:
Keinath
Van Garderen
In fact only Hoem, Chamorro and Kebede are remaining from the breakaway with GC riders Machado and Velits with them now.
Then 1min later the "peloton" of 32 riders.
Biggest names being dropped from there are Sagan, Bennett and Kirsch!
No surprise that the former break riders can`t keep up with MAchado and Velits. Big podium and top5 attack here by those two.
The gap though did melt again once Brambilla was chasing. Quickly an elite group was ahead of the peloton with:
Pluchkin
Lecuisinier
Brambilla
Gesink
Tenorio
and remaining breakaway riders.
First two attack though trying to bridge to Machado/Velits.
In the peloton Alarcon trying to somehow get back into the KoM fight and also attacks. Behind him the always up there Van Garderen.
Aker working for Guldhammer behind with Nesset and also Van den Broeck, Nibali, Uran, Olivier, Keinath, Morton and others in a 24 rider group. That said both Alarcon and Van Garderen weren`t able to keep the gap.
The "flatter" part in the middle avoided bigger gaps and Pluchkin going up to the first two.
22s only behind Gesink still with Brambilla and Lecuisinier and Tenorio following.
55s to the "peloton" in which Quintana is the first to be dropped.
Sagan about 2min behind this "field.
Also Gesink and Lecuisinier now up to the front three. Seeing Guldhammer still in the "peloton" this could potentially be the top5 in the GC now! Nesset though trying his best to chase.
Tenorio follows 30s behind those. Then Brambilla another 22s and the remaining being yet another 30s behind where Uran, Guldhammer, Nibali and Van den Broeck chase themselves now. They surely need to as Van Garderen is also still there.
Kolesnikov, Goos, Lutsenko, Kudus now at the end of the 20 rider group soon to be dropped.
Gesink further up accelerates dropping both Velits and Lecuisinier this way. Now it`s really the best in front. Apparently todays climb shows the GC positions quite well.
Next to the earlier struggling group around Kolesnikov and Lutsenko some more names are with them behind now:
Olivier, Samwel, Koch, Herklotz, Bongiorno, Kunshin.
In front of them Morton with Nesset, who also couldn`t follow the 8 rider group of Uran, Guldhammer, Nibali, Alarcon, Van den Broeck, Keinath, Brambilla and "..." Van Garderen.
700m and Gesink in the lead. Machado and Pluchkin just behind. Most likely the GC fight is over as also tomorrows mountain TT is not expected to change the 1-2-3. So todays stage win might be their prime goal.
But just like the last couple of kilometers also the final was all about Gesink. The GC leader sprints from the front to another big win. Mr. Vuelta 2016 justifies the lead in one of the toughest mountain stages.
Behind him a lot closer but Pluchkin takes it against Machado.
Velits in 4th with good chances to climb into the top5 now while Lecuisinier keeps up his very good Vuelta with the 4th in the GC.
Tenorio a few seconds behind them as 6th should at least climb a bit again.
Uran and Alarcon next already 2'20 behind. No points for Alarcon though and hence the KoM winner is Chamorro!
Guldhammer and Nibali 10s behind them. The Norwegian a big loser today eventhough dropping to 6th is still pretty solid in this field.
Van Garderen yet again over performing hugely!
Losing a bit more than 1min only, he stays in 7th but only 4s ahead of Nibali, which most likely is changing tomorrow. Though it`s more than 5min to the 9th, hence the top10 for the Movistar rider seems sealed.
With him Keinath, Van den Broeck, Morton and Brambilla. The Bpost leader also lost today as the top10 chance seems small now.
Next the group around Kolesnikov, Lutsenko, Olivier, Bongiorno... About 1min behind Van Garderen. So not a lot of changes in this area neither.
Sagan, who is another group later still 14th in the GC with Lutsenko in 12th. Both have a bit of a gap tomorrow over better climbers and hence could remain there.
Next to Saber also Heymes abandoned today.
