Tough stage with 4 Cat.1 climbs. The finish though comes after the last descent, hence creating big gaps to direct opponents might be hard to open. Though a good descender could surely try something here.
6 riders in the break and who else than the two KoM hunters should be in there as well.
Chamorro (24./70 Pts)
Alarcon (19./53 Pts)
Juul-Jensen
Fraile
Edet
Kennaugh
While Seibeb and Koretzky desperately try to also be involved in the KoM fight and have joined parts of the breakaway, we see a split in there.
Only the 3 strongest are in front now. This is Chamorro and Alarcon of course but also Kennaugh. All others follow 40s later and another 1'30 to the peloton in which most of the sprinters already are dropped! Could become a crucial day for those.
And while both riders gave him a challenge, Alarcon easily takes the 16 points on top! Chamorro and Kennaugh follow with Seibeb and Koretzky taking far too few to really have a chance.
On the descent the break came together again. But the same picture on top of the 2nd Cat.1.
Alarcon clearly strongest takes another 16 points and behind him it`s Fraile and Kennaugh. Chamorro only 4th here! So the gap slowly melts for the Coldeportes rider.
Going up the third climb eBuddy once again with full control. Parts of the breakaway are now caught again with Juul-Jensen and Seibeb being the first. With 54km to go the gap is quite small already.
Close to the top Alarcon shows that he wants the stage win as well as he already goes solo. 35s behind him Kennaugh, who is stronger than Chamorro (another 45s) today. The amount of breakaway kilometers today see him suffer clearly.
The peloton is 3'45 behind him in total and down to 57 riders. Aker (Hoem), Metinvest (Dzhus) have taken over now and suddenly several eBuddy team mates drop from the peloton. Though Gesink still has the valuable support of Brambilla and 1-2 others.
Other riders with huge problems today are Úran and Bongiorno. Both are dropped with yet another climb to go. With them Penasa and Koretzky!
Just before the final climb starts and the gap to Alarcon as last breakaway rider has gone to under 90s we see the first attack from the peloton. It`s Olivier followed by Van den Broeck. So one rider trying to get closer to the top10 while the other attacks the riders in there already!
Behind also Bennett attacks for Aegon with Koch being the 4th riders in this move. All being caught again though as Brambilla is not only riding for Gesink but also defends his own GC result this way.
Still 8km of climbing and the gap to Alarcon became tiny due to this attack. Koch and Bennett still trying actually. 41 riders still in the group, which is already 2'45 ahead of Uran.
4km uphill and this time a better attack. Velits going past Alarcon.
Guldhammer and Machado still a bit behind. So the fight for the top5 and even podium is opened.
Quickly Brambilla has reached his limits and Gesink has to take over himself. Surprisingly the US jersey of Van Garderen is just behind him! And also Lutsenko and Sagan high up there with all the other GC riders Tenorio, Keinath, Pluchkin, Nibali...
2km and the gap is up to 30s.
Pluchkin knows about the danger of Machado gaining time and hence goes himself. Gesink immediately follows. Then Bennett again who seems to be the stronger Aegon rider today.
A bit later Nibali and Kolesnikov, who once again shows his GT skills.
Machado now solo in front when Pluchkin reached his chasers.
The other 4 attackers including Gesink still a bit behind then.
A group of 6 including Lecuisinier and Tenorio as best placed following next as they opened a gap to the group of 10 behind with Van Garderen and Lutsenko now struggling.
Kudus, Galta, Uran are only 1min behind this 10 rider group with Bongiorno having another minute.
Machado being first on the top while Tenorio also attacked from the group behind.
Gesink is not really known as top descender but still needs to close the gap a bit to Pluchkin and the others.
In fact though the gap is getting bigger and bigger.
Nibali instead shows how to descent properly and goes past him easily.
20s advantage for Machado.
40s for Gesink and Nibali to close the gap to the trio in between.
Tenorio with Bennett and Kolesnikov are another 50s behind ahead of Sagan, then Lecusinier and Morton, while Keinath is a bit behind and worst descent today of Olivier, who is losing with every meter.
Well done Nibali. With 4km to the finish, he is up to the Pluchkin group. And seeing that also Machado lost a bit of his gap, even the stage win is possible for him now. Gesink is 50s behind showing his awful descent.
Bad luck Machado. Only 600m to the finish and he is caught. Nibali though not looking good neither as the descent did cost him a lot of energy.
Velits in the lead with Pluchkin and Guldhammer just behind. This trio seems to go for the win.
But no big changes on the last meters. Velits keeps the gap and takes the win. Nice one for Becherovka.
Guldhammer outsprints Pluchkin for 2nd with Machado and Nibali being s.t. with them.
Sagan as 6th with a great performance as well. 56s later only. Behind him Kolesnikov and Bennett. Gesink then as he was caught by this group and also Tenorio up to them.
Kirsch being Vesuvio`s best today as Goos took a rest day it seems. 2'36 for this group also including Lecuisinier, Morton, Koch and Keinath.
Only 2s seoerate Lecuisinier as 4th and Guldhammer as 5th now!
Also Velits and Nibali are not too far off and show ambitions to climb.
Olivier next after losing 2-3 min on the descent today. He comes in with 4'20 which wouldn`t be that bad even when the next group, which he gapped uphill wasn`t just 19s behind him. Hence his gain on direct opponents is tiny. Van Garderen, Alarcon, Lutsenko, Goos, Van den Broeck, Quintana all in this group.
And also Uran and Bongiorno are with them as they rode a consistent last climb while the others lost with every kilometer.
In the KoM fight we will see thrilling last days surely as Chamorro keeps the lead but it`s down to only 1 point!
Even Pluchkin and Machado are not that far behind.
Though two riders lost against the time limit. Lanterne Rouge Ford and Vassdål both must go home that close to the finish.
