First of 4 consecutive mountain stages that offer the last chance to get Gesink of the throne. Though more likely the fight is only for the spots behind as his gap is rather huge.
Interesting is how the puncheurs now perform to keep a high GC as their favoured stages are passed.
And obviously the KoM fight goes into the final with Chamorro being in the lead but Alarcon showed big interest as well.
12 rider breakaway. More than usual surely and of course both KoM challengers in there:
Alarcon
Chamorro
Laengen
Duchesne
Fraile
Ndayisenga
Boily
Haig
Vosekalns
Kolar
Kennaugh
Novikov
Meanwhile a crash in the peloton hit 3 riders:
Elissonde
Bennett
Roe
All of them in the field a bit later though.
Alarcon in a class of his own which is not surprising in the mountains. He easily takes the early Cat.3 but Chamorro goes over the line next ahead of Laengen.
On the Cat.2 the group is down to 9 as the RBC duo Boily and Duchesne and Evonik`s Vosekalns couldn`t follow. 2min to the peloton as well only.
Alarcon takes the big points yet again and this time Kennaugh, Haig and Novikov steal the next points from Chamorro, who only takes 2. The gap between him and Alarcon getting smaller.
60 riders left there and Ruijgh, Van der Velde and Stancu control the pace. Gesink just behind with Brambilla still inside the pack. And also Majka is probably still there. So eBuddy with full control.
22km left and while the final climb isn`t the steepest, the length could still play a big role. First to attack is Keinath, 14th in the GC.
With Kudus, Olivier and Bongiorno similar riders a bit behind him in the top20 follow.
Only Keinath though was able to keep a gap. And hence the next row of riders is attacking. Yet again mainly the 2nd tier riders.
Samwel
Herklotz
Koch
Choi
Formolo
Bennett
Campero
Keinath in the meantime is up to the breakaway making it 10 riders in front. Then the 7 recent attackers follow 1'10 later and another 35s to the 50 rider peloton where eBuddy got some support by one Metinvest rider.
The next few kilometers are the steepest but also have a descent in between.
Keinath accelerates again and only Alarcon is able to follow. For the rest of the break it was a nice day in the lead but now the struggle will start.
Also for the 7 rider group behind, their attempt is over as they are back in the peloton as Majka pulled the trigger.
17th in the GC, Goos is having problems to follow this pace right now.
After the descent another very steep section and Alarcon now has to pay for his long day in the wind.
Keinath accelerates and goes solo.
44s behind the small climber 6 remaining breakaway riders but also just 33s behind the 43 rider peloton. Goos already 3 min behind that not having a good day it seems.
Seems to be a good day for Pokerstars.
Tenorio attacking and jumps into the former breakaway group. Behind him Úran. So two riders just outside of the top10 but who hoped for more.
This now also forces eBuddy to send Brambilla to the front, who is working together with Majka as last helpers for Gesink.
The group with Tenorio is quickly caught. But Uran jumps out of it again and chasing Keinath and Alarcon now.
A punch in the face for all teams with riders in the top10-20 area. One of the main riders of this Vuelta so far is attacking again, where he isn`t expected to perform well. Actually both of them are.
Van Garderen, 4th
Lutsenko, 9th
So they even higher the pressure now on the GC riders.
Velits tried to follow but in the end Brambilla brings them all back. So only Keinath-Alarcon-Uran in the front with 8km to go.
2km later Uran has reached Alarcon. They are 40s ahead of the peloton and 1min behind Keinath.
Time for the big riders to attack.
Machado
Pluchkin
Lecuisinier
So the fight for the podium!
Gesink not following and trusting into Brambilla`s strength. Meanwhile Guldhammer, Van den Broeck and Nibali also try to accelerate.
Sagan at least one of the normal performing puncheurs as he now gets dropped together with Chamorro as the favourite group is down to 20 riders.
A bit later Alarcon also is caught by them and more riders struggle to follow the high pace. First are the Aegon duo Olivier and Bennett together with Formolo.
3km left and also the gap to Keinath is getting smaller. 16s only to Uran and Pluchkin!
Then 20s to Machado/Lecuisinier.
16 riders follow around Gesink and the other top10 riders including Van Garderen and Lutsenko!
Brambilla indeed proves his worth again. He is pulling Gesink up to the Machado group. And also with them Alarcon! He is not giving up yet and wants more KoM points today.
Van Garderen follows next as he also attacked the top10 group.
Pluchkin and Uran pass Keinath making it a trio now.
Gesink though attacks and follows 30s later with Machado just seconds behind.
All others back into the "peloton" of 13 riders.
Tenorio
Lecuisinier
Alarcon
Brambilla
Nibali
Van Garderen
Van den Broeck
Guldhammer
Morton
Velits
Lutsenko
Quintana
Kolesnikov!
Kudus/Bongiorno/Choi 45s later which is still 30s ahead of Olivier/Bennett/Penasa/Formolo/Campero.
No big changes until the final kilometer.
Still a trio in front with Pluchkin doing all the work with Gesink chasing behind. Down to 20s!
Last years GT dominator accelerates and neither Uran nor Keinath can follow.
So it`s a nice win for Pluchkin. As Machado is quite behind, he seems to win the fight for 2nd. As Gesink is almost up to the next, the gain on him is small.
Keinath almost took the win today but had no chance against Pluchkin. But he takes 2nd ahead of Uran. 13s only with Gesink in the same time.
Machado comes in next and also just 31s behind Pluchkin. So keeping his chances.
Lecuisinier keeps on his good race and follows 17s later, which is 10s ahead of the first bigger group around Guldhammer, Tenorio, Morton, Velits, Nibali and also the puncheur duo Van Garderen and Lutsenko!
Alarcon lost in the end and is not getting any points as 16th.
