Next mountain stageand yet another long climb in the end. Estacion de Montana Manzaneda with a length of almost 28km and 5,1% in average.
Yesterday Gesink didn`t really lose time and also had the strongest team mates with him in Brambilla. Today is the next chance for Pluchkin, Machado and Tenorio.
Also the KoM fight is continueing and could still be very thrilling in the upcoming week.
Alarcon (18 pts)
Chamorro (56 pts)
ahead of the peloton. Obviously later with quite a comfortable gap but first is the far better climber as proven yesterday already.
Hence it`s no surprise that Alarcon takes the early Cat.3.
As points were still given to the peloton, Seibeb (36 pts) gets the final 2.
In fact, the Kenya rider was joined by Duchesne (42 pts) and both reach the front duo on the flatter part. Pure KoM fight but the gap went down a bit to 2min only.
Next Cat.3 and yet again Alarcon the strongest. Chamorro following with 4 points, while Duchesne got dropped here.
Instead Koretzky reached the group on this climb and takes the last points ahead of poor Seibeb. Once more the I-Gen rider is showing himself.
The riders more or less rode without any events until the foot of the long climb. Koretzky once again annoyed the KoM riders as he takes the third Cat.3 ahead of Alarcon and Chamorro. Seibeb once again without any points.
And as the gap never was higher than 2min, the obvious happened. Once starting the final climb, the breakaway is caught. Gesink himself in the lead showing his strength, but in fact Stancu will move into that position just after.
Van den Broeck and Velits seem to feel well today as they already attack with 15km to go!
Behind them Keinath and Morton follow.
Also Úran, Bongiorno, Kudus and Goos a bit later.
But actually only Keinath was able to jump to the duo.
Though eBuddy is getting some nice support today. Aker`s Laengen is chasing this trio. Guldhammer seems to feel a lot better today after his desastrous performance yesterday. And riders such as Velits, Van den Broeck and Keinath are his main threat at the moment.
The high pace sees several riders off the back. Quintana, Sagan, Kirsch to name a few.
10km and Velits and Van den Broeck still have a 34s gap as they had accelerated again dropping Keinath.
Still a cooperation of eBuddy and Aker is chasing them. Several riders are losing ground now. Lutsenko as top10 rider once again struggles on the long climbs but surprisingly also Gesink`s best support Brambilla struggles!
And at the end of the remaining favourite group it`s top20 riders Goos and Olivier plus the Puma duo Bongiorno/Herklotz also with huge problems.
Meanwhile Tejay "What the Hell" Van Garderen is still in the first 5 positions and just next to Gesink!
Machado and Lecuisinier the next to attack.
So is Gesink
Pluchkin
Tenorio
Van Garderen
Alarcon
Guldhammer
Pluchkin is up to the Machado group and they have gapped Gesink by a bit! No support for the Dutch today!
Tenorio a bit later still ahead of the next group where Nibali also has found his legs.
The 25 riders in the remaining peloton are all better climbers than Van Garderen actually. Still they are 90s behind! Though the very best are up there.
Gesink is chasing and slowly closing the gap. He has them all in his view and this is all he needs. His advantage is big enough as long as he is not going full k.o.
Not ideal for him though that both groups in front merge and now it`s 5 riders against Gesink! 25s now. Guldhammer another 18s as next after gapping Nibali/Tenorio/Alarcon by 43s already.
Van Garderen also showing some more usual strength now being 1min behind the Tenorio group already! 11s ahead of Keinath, who attacked and is another minute ahead of the remaining GC riders, who have a total of 3'45 to the first riders.
Almost at the finish and Gesink still in sight. Good for him.
Van den Broeck for the first time showing a weakness today and is dropped just like Lecuisinier from the 3 better climbers...
...where Pluchkin accelerates and having a small gap to MAchado and Velits.
In a long line the riders finish today. Will be interesting to see how judges rate the gaps.
Pluchkin though shows his climbing strength and wins todays stage. But Gesink is in the background so clearly not having lost too much.
Results then show a 8s gap to Machado in 2nd. So the podium fight seems to be those two having an advantage.
Van den Broeck with a huge final sprint passing Velits even. With Lecuisinier in 5th they finish 24s behind.
Gesink wasn`t able to close the gap. He is losing 52s which is a bit more than it actually looked like earlier. He lost quite a bit in the final 500m. Still 7'37 ahead in the GC but it shows, that he is not unbeatable and many more mountain stages (and harder ones) are yet to come.
Hopefully for eBuddy, the team itself will be of more support in future stages as shown in past stages. Today they all took a day off it seems.
Guldhammer also recovered and is losing 1'20 coming in next. Not as strong as you would like to see him in the podium/top5 fight. But far better than yesterday.
Nibali in 8th together with an incredible Alarcon today. First all day in the break, then still with the best in the final.
Tenorio todays big loser. He still is 10th of the day but already 2min off. He might have to say goodbye to any podium ambitions. Totally exhausted and/or disappointed he crosses the line.
Uran also with a weaker day in 11th and already 3min off.
Behind him Keinath, who compensates Tenorio`s semi strong day and Bongiorno, who recovered well after struggling earlier.
Then Van Garderen! 3'47 only his loss. So still in 8th! Gaining on far better climbers! Morton with 4'11 as next also ahead of the bigger group after attacking late.
5'12 their loss. It will be hard for them to reach more than a late top20 when not gaining on some of the other riders. Quintana, Brambilla, Olivier, Kolesnikov, Goos, Kudus, Galta all in that group.
Different than Van Garderen, the other puncheurs ride as they are supposed to. Lutsenko fighting hard but losing 6'40. Sagan even 8'16. Both actually better climbers than Van Garderen normally!
Michael Ford once again final last of the stage. And still in the race. Great fight he is showing there!
