Today is some kind of start fór the tough finale of the Vuelta. Still a bit of hills and flat to come but today is one of several mountain stages to come and hence an opportunity for Pluchkin, Tenorio, Machado and others to gain time on Gesink and obviously also the puncheurs in the GC spots.
The early Cat.3 sees a fight between two riders, who look to have KoM ambitions. Coming over the line in 2nd is the actual KoM leader Chamorro. He is beaten by Alarcon, who is already 24min behind in the GC and now seems to aim the KoM jersey and stage wins as compensation.
4 more riders join those two for the breakaway. Surprisingly 3 of them are RBC riders around Duchesne, who also showed ambitions already. His team mates are Matte and Bonnin. Both actually better climbers! Last in the group is La Lavandier for Bpost.
Early on it was Castroviejo. Then Sinkeldam and as third rider Van der Velde. Now also Ruijgh and Stancu in addition.
Pure control by Gesink`s eBuddy team. With Majka and luxury domestique Brambilla also in the group, Gesink looks in a good position.
Surprisingly the gap never was over 3min and now is at 1'20 with 35km to go!
Bonnin and Matte have worked a lot for Duchesne and both drop back now to the peloton.
30km and the gap is down to 1min. The two strongest decide to attack and we haven`t even reached the climb yet.
Chamorro and Alarcon against the field now.
And another GC rider, who only had bad luck so far decides to go for stage wins. Morton attacks at the start of the climb "La Covatilla" with 19km to go. He is followed by Evonik`s best climber Koch.
Both are no GC threats but eBuddy still sends their two strongest to the front in Majka and Brambilla.
Samwel was the first to jump to Koch, who was not fully able to join Morton.
Then Olivier and Quintana and with those two, we are in the top20 of the GC.
Both follow Morton to reach the front duo.
Samwel/Koch still a bit behind just seconds ahead of the peloton. But the gaps in general are small.
With 7,5km to go the gap is ~1min. Olivier decides to attack which causes Chamorro to be dropped. Will be hard to add any points now.
Behind Brambilla has first caught Samwel and Koch and then continued to thin out the favourite group. It`s only 39 riders, who are 1min behind the trio with Olivier having another 25s.
Gesink and Pluchkin side by side with Machado just behind. Tenorio then next to the just caught Chamorro.
Velits, Nibali, Lecuisinier also just behind.
Then with a small gap Guldhammer, Van den Broeck, Goos, Van Garderen.
And another small gap to Keinath, Samwel, Sagan, Kudus, Uran, Lutsenko, Bongiorno, Galta, Izagirre...
Lutsenko as 2nd in the GC now in huge trouble. The puncheur has reached his limits today and drops back. Also Bongiorno in this group.
Sagan and Van Garderen still a bit ahead in the next group with Bennett, Uran, Herklotz, Kohl and surprisingly also Guldhammer, who is struggling.
And here it is. The expected attack by Pluchkin and immediately followed by Machado.
This is also the end of the Alarcon/Morton/Quintana gap. Olivier still with a 30s gap but also still 3km to go.
Tenorio, Gesink, Velits, Brambilla and Lecuisinier just behind this attack, while a small gap has opened to Nibali, Úran, Van den Broeck, Guldhammer, Goos and still Van Garderen.
With 2km to go the time of Olivier in the lead is also over as Pluchkin and Machado accelerate past him.
Tenorio, Gesink, Brambilla, Velits, Lecuisinier and also still Alarcon are with them.
Nibali, Morton and Quintana follow 32s later.
Van den Broeck and Van Garderen another 15s.
Uran solo ahead of Goos, Kudus and Keinath.
Guldhammer really struggling 1'20 behind the leading group already in a group of 3rd tier GC riders such as Kunshin, Bennett or Herklotz. Definitely not his kind of level normally.
Flamme Rouge and still Pluchkin and Machado look the strongest.
An incredible Brambilla though is always ahead of Gesink not allowing any gap.
Tenorio and Velits just behind with the two youngest in Lecuisinier and Olivier now struggling a bit.
Machado opens the sprint closely followed by Pluchkin.
Tenorio then seems to be strongest as he goes past the eBuddy duo with Velits and Lecuisinier a bit behind while Olivier is dropped completely.
And this is also more or less the finishing order as no other rider was able to go any faster.
Machado with a nice wildcard win.
Pluchkin at least gaining a bit of bonus seconds while Tenorio as 3rd also takes some.
Gesink in 4th ahead of Velits, Lecuisinier and Brambilla. All within the winner time though.
Unlucky Olivier who is losing 51s in the end, which is also the time for the next riders: Uran, Nibali, Van Garderen and Van den Broeck. Impressive by the US rider, who is not on his terrain really and keeping up with the best.
Alarcon and Goos next. First tried and later proves to be Vesuvio`s best GC rider here. 1'32 for both.
1'51 for Keinath Morton, Kudus and Quintana.
Guldhammer then with a bad day losing 2'22.
This is ~half a minute faster only than Sagan and Lutsenko, who fought until the end.
GC wise the stage racers still take over with Pluchkin, Machado and Lecuisinier passing the puncheurs. But still 5th for Van Garderen and 7th for Lutsenko is not too bad.
