Vuelta a Espana - Stage 7
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0171.jpg

2nd mountain stage in this years Vuelta and a very tough one. The Sierra de Filabres early on with a length of 27km and then the final climb to Sierra Nevada with a length of 23km and 6,6% in average.

Top favourites are the best climbers such as Pluchkin, Tenorio, Gesink or Machado.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0173.jpg

9 riders form todays breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0188.jpg

The long Cat.1 early on saw many of them dropping back. Only 2 were able to stay ahead of the peloton. It`s
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Torres Agudelo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png D.Quintana. So KoM leader Duchesne will struggle to get more points here.

Quintana won ahead of Torres Agudelo, who looked less interested.

Behind then Chamorro, who attacked for the points. Then Castroviejo, Stancu and Gesink as eBuddy is working and Seibeb as former KoM leader also gets 2 points.

Decent climbers such as Elissonde and Boily are dropped together with KoM leader Duchesne and Brown. Not ideal for RBC as they either struggle or being injured.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0197.jpg

Full control for Gesink. eBuddy with a really strong showing so far. Sinkeldam, Castroviejo, Stancu, Van der Velde, Ruijgh, Majka and as last support Brambilla are great riders to have when in the lead.
81km and only 1'40 advantage. Still 147 riders in the peloton though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0200.jpg

A group of 3 sees a good opportunity to attack. It`s
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Formolo
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Carapaz
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Kolar
GC wise no danger really.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0206.jpg

And Gesink seems to plan something. Before the Cat.3 Van der Velde, Stancu and Ruijgh have caught them all. No longer a breakaway and still 50km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0210.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Chamorro and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Seibeb attack for the points with Van der Velde taking the remaining. Chamorro now up to 48 points, which is 6 more than Duchesne, who got no points at all today. Seibeb in 3rd with 36 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0213.jpg

20km left and Majka as second last rider for Gesink. Brambilla still without any work today and Ruijgh also in there despite looking rather exhausted. 117 riders remaining but this will soon change as we hit the long climb and the pace is quite high.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0223.jpg

The puncheurs were high in the GC so far. But today they struggle on that climb. Skujins, Sagan and now also Van Garderen get dropped. From the top puncheurs only Lutsenko still able to hang on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0225.jpg

But the pace is going up yet again as we see an attack by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits. First seems to be okay after his crash but then again lost quite a lot of time already! Well both actually as Velits is also 7'24 behind.

Immediately Brambilla takes over the work and is chasing them for his leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0231.jpg

A group of 13 riders is splitting from the rest. Then 23 riders in the 2nd group.

It`s
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Alarcon
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Brambilla
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Pluchkin

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm_den.png Guldhammer
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Quintana

This means pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Nibali and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van den Broeck as biggest names are in the later group. Also
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0251.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0257.jpg

Again Velits accelerates and only Alarcon followes directly.
Machado a bit later tries the same and this now is a more serious podium attack.

Though Pluchkin, Gesink and Guldhammer just behind them while the two groups behind more or less merge again, which is obvioulsy good news for Van den Broeck or Nibali.

Tenorio now the main rider, who is chasing in the 30 rider group trying to not allow a too big gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0261.jpg

When the two trios in front also come together it`s the leader himself attacking and only Machado and Alarcon immediately can react.

Behind Tenorio and Quintana almost up to the Pluchkin group while Lecuisinier and Uran are chasing behind.

Still 10km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0267.jpg

Velits, Tenorio and Quintana look weakest and actually were dropped for some time. Though the group of Machado, Pluchkin, Alarcon and Guldhammer is not really happy as some riders want to chase less than others.
Hence Gesink has a nice gap with 5km to go.

The "peloton" around Lecuisinier, Uran, Nibali is also 1min behind already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0270.jpg

A similar gap for Gesink at the 3,5km mark. Behind mainly Alarcon is chasing, which is weird as the other riders and in especially Pluchkin should go for it but apparently the Metinvest leader is not on his best day. Just like Tenorio, Guldhammer and Quintana he is now at the end of the group.
Alarcon and Machado the only chasers really while Velits seems to have found some legs again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0273.jpg

Uran, Lecuisinier, Kunshin and Kudus with a gap behind. It surely is too late to catch the others. But it`s a good way to reduce their loss and also gaining on some other top10 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0276.jpg

Flamme Rouge for Gesink, who is one step further to gain more time.
Alarcon and Machado got rid of the others and will fight for the stage podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0278.jpg

But the win is obvious. Gesink the strongest today taking a solo win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0280.jpg

Alarcon with a great answer to yesterdays stage gets 2nd. Machado in 3rd. Both lose 17s only today which is a lot better than it looked like.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0282.jpg

Guldhammer comes in at 34s with Tenorio, Velits, Pluchkin and Quintana at 51s. So all within range but still yet another loss.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0284.jpg

Lecuisinier and Uran at 2'30. Quite a loss today. Kudus and Kunshin 17s later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_07_PCM0286.jpg

Quite a lot of riders today lose 3'41 and couldn`t gain on some direct opponents. In especially Aegon with 4 riders, Vesuvio with 3 or Jayco`z with 3 could have done a bit more probably. For Morton it`s at least a sign of recovery to stay with similar riders.

Big ride for Lutsenko though, who also is up there and remains a good GC spot, while Van den Broeck, Nibali or Bongiorno also had hoped for better.

Sagan 7min, Van Garderen more than 8min, Skujins 10min lose quite a lot as well today and lose several GC spots.

Last but not least one abandon today as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Campenaerts is out of hte time limit.
