The amount of top puncheurs was already mentioned before. But today is the first real puncheur stage with some steep and short hills towards the end. Skujins, Ginanni, Van Garderen, Sagan, Lutsenko, Korezky are the obvious puncheurs on the list. GC leader Gesink though also belongs to those very best. Hence it could also become a GC fight on shorter climbs today.
Though a stage like this in the past also was a nice opportunity for the breakaway as many riders already are several minutes behind and can only aim the KoM or stage glory.
For such an opportunity though a group of just 3 riders is rather small.
Hivert
Declerq
Kneisky
Just ahead of the first mountain sprint the KoM`s 2nd Duchesne (30pts) and 3rd Chamorro (22pts) have attacked and join the breakaway.
It`s not only a fight for the KoM. Chamorro already won the first semi hill stage and could make it a 2nd today.
That said as 19th and +5'08 in the GC, he is by far a bigger threat as the former 3 riders.
Chamorro also takes the big points and behind it looks like Duchesne ahead of Declerq and Hivert, while Kneisky struggled.
Bad news for some 3rd tier riders in the peloton. Nesset and Vysna are dropped which might be probable crash injuries from past days.
The shorter Cat.3 is a lot more in favour of Duchesne. So the RBC rider takes the 6 points here and as Declerq and Hivert once more decide to attack the points as well, Chamorro this time with a no pointer.
Well. Shit!
2 riders down and apparently both are well known team leaders. Alarcon and Morton look in pain.
Others such as Herklotz, Chernetskiy and Tanovitchii can`t go around and also fall on the ground when passing them.
Bad luck for all 5 as they are quick on their bikes but it was exactly the time, when several splits happened and suddenly they are 3-4 groups behind the favourite group and they don`t really send a lot of support to them neither.
Morton and Alarcon still a bit behind and at least Jayco`z sending some riders back while Red Bull only have 1 rider with Alarcon and not chasing that quick.
It definitely doesn`t help neither that the first puncheurs attack in the group of 72 riders remaining. First to go is Zakarin and while he joins the breakaway 9km later, Quevedo tried the same but is still in between and actually closer to the pack.
Koretzky is the next to attack and the gap to the 6 in front is only 45s as well.
Meanwhile the Alarcon/Morton group is 3min down and still no real support. Question is if the support is not strong enough after the hills or their leaders have bigger issues.
And we see a big counter attack as well now. Skujins, the top puncheur in this Vuelta followed Koretzky, went past him, then bridged to the breakaway and also gapped those.
Both Zakarin and Koretzky now in that group while Kneisky is dropped.
Only 21 riders are left in the peloton after this acceleration. Most of the big names are in there. Though the lonely rider in between both groups is Tenorio, who must have been surprised by such move. His team mates Keinath and their 3rd big man Izagirre are in the later group of 48 riders.
At least Izagirre is chasing there trying to help Tenorio. Also dropped into the 2nd field:
Kudus
Quintana
Bennett
Strong move by Koretzky who is back with Skujins. Together they have a 17s lead to Zakarin.
More interesting though the move by Van Garderen. The US rider is up to Hivert and trying to get to the first two now.
Also behind a group of 6 with Lutsenko, Juul-Jensen and Sagan now joining the former breakaway.
Then 17 GC riders mainly in the next group with Tenorio still a bit of a gap. Izagirre almost with him though as he gapped most of the next group.
Alarcon and Morton in huge trouble as minutes open in between the groups. This is going to be a tough day for both teams.
Tenorio almost back at the end of the favourite group. Both Izagirre and Keinath gave it all until now and are not far behind.
Couple more riders though struggle apparently and are around Tenorio, while a small gap opens in front of them. Those are surprisingly:
Velits
Lecuisinier
as also
Olivier
Goos
Levarlet
1km to the top and the leader attacks. Gesink knows he has an advantage on those hills and he might have waited too long actually seeing other puncheurs ahead. Now though he decides to attack the other climbers and quickly opens a gap.
Ginanni, Pluchkin, Machado, Guldhammer immediately react and form another chasing group with Gesink`s team mate Brambilla behind them.
Then a group around Nibali, Van den Broeck and surprisingly strong Bongiorno and Kolesnikov.
The previously struggling riders indeed lost contact to those.
First over the top was Skujins ahead of Koretzky, Van Garderen, Lutsenko and Sagan to take some KoM points. But their main goal is the stage win.
Better descender or too much effort by Koretzky on the climb? Skujins at least is able to get rid of the French and is going solo towards a nice win. 6km left though and Van Garderen dangerously close now as well.
Flamme Rouge and only 11s left. Skujins starts his last acceleration. Van Garderen passed Koretzky and is the only one to challenge him.
And it`s a nice win for Evonik. Big win for sure as they don`t have a real GC rider and need any GT point, they can get.
Van Garderen as 2nd was close but probably attacked too late for a stage win.
Poor Koretzky. Both Sagan and Lutsenko passed him in the end. So while being strong uphill, he lost the pace on the descent. Only 5th for him, but still a nice result nevertheless against such competition.
Juul-Jensen next and with him the leader already. Also Uran, who must have got forgotten. So some time gaining by the unlucky Colombian. Gesink though with a huge step forward in this first week.
Ginanni with a late attack just behind them and also Zakarin still ahead of the next.
Bongiorno with the best day so far winning the sprint in the Pluchkin group. But it`s incredible 2min behind the Gesink group! Hence it`s more than 4min already for Pluchkin to gain back in the mountains.
Van Garderen actually taking 2nd in the GC and also Lutsenko and Sagan climb up a lot.
Tenorio one big loser today. Just like Velits and Lecuisinier. Together with Keinath, Goos and Olivier they cross the line another 53s later.
Alarcon with almost no support never made it back and is losing 8'55 today. This at least did not look too injured actually. Was just a bad time to crash and no team mates around.
Morton though must be hurt as he lost more than 12min and was in the end surrounded by team mates, who couldn`t go faster or follow the Alarcon group.
