3rd sprint stage of the race and Roelandts and Cavendish are the two winners so far. Will we see yet another winner or can one of them repeat their success?
Barbari
Hivert
Bravo
form todays breakaway. Orange apparently not happy with Kennaugh so far and prefer another tactic now.
Meanwhile Copeland has abandoned the race as first rider early on! Not ideal of course for Pendleton`s who were already 1 rider short anyway. So only 6 riders left for them.
Bravo takes the first sprint ahead of Barbari and Hivert. Though the bigger news happen behind. It`s a shit day here with lots of rain. Some riders slip on the roads and crash.
First it`s Rosch, Smirnovs, Seibeb, Campero, Zakarin, Furdi, Bogdanovics and Elissonde.
Then a few kilometer later a bigger crash. Biggest names are Van den Broeck, Alarcon, Quintana, Ginanni, Koretzky, Kirsch, Brambilla and Kennaugh`s leadout Pedersen.
They make it back into the peloton though.
All this chaos though gave the trio in front a few extra seconds. With 5km to go they still have a 55s gap. Red Bull with Alarcon and Bouygues with Kneisky giving it all now to still deliver a sprint finish.
Meanwhile Maesen is a second abandon of todays stage!
3km for the trio. The peloton comes 600m later. Close call between both group. The sprinter trains at least form. Today with some kind of Bouygues debut train though as Orange indeed goes for Hivert and don`t higher the pace behind for Kennaugh. Actually the Brit is nowhere to be seen and Kreder instead the team`s sprinter today. Also none of the 3 trains really working great as they are all mixed with other sprinters in between.
Hadi Tanner Enger Haddi Weylandt Coquard Tewelde Keukeleire Roelandts Van der Lijke Guarnieri Lay Chen Groenewegen Cavendish Kreder- Saber
2,5km and 36s! This could actually work out for them. Hivert giving it a last big push with the other two following in his wheel.
7 riders behind open a gap. It`s the Bouygues train that works surprisingly well and all riders, who were lucky to be around them have a nice advantage.
Hadi-Weylandt-Roelandts is obvious.
Then Coquard and Enger on both sides and Groenewegen from behind.
The lone Red Bull rider is not Cavendish. It`s their climber Alarcon as he was still keeping the pace high but now instead dropped his own sprint leader, who was behind his own train.
Bad luck Van der Lijke, who just left Coquard`s wheel to join the Grieg-Eftel train...who are now desperately trying to come back.
From behind though another rider goes for the long sprint. It`s Peter Sagan, who seems to have most energy left and almost joins the front group.
Under the Flamme Rouge the breakaway is now dangerously close as Hivert got no support in the final.
And there is nothing that could be done against the faster sprinters. Enger going into the lead now with Coquard behind him.
Roelandts and Groenewegen behind with Sagan in between the sprinter groups.
400m and Roelandts only now leaves Weylandt`s wheel. Can he still pass Enger and Coquard, who look in a much better position?
He decides to go in between them, which is always a bit blocked. Groenewegen behind is beaten but looks in a comfortable 4th.
Close sprint but in the end Enger takes the win from the front position. Strong sprint by the young Norwegian and he proves once more being the most consistent sprinter of this Vuelta so far. So a totally deserved win.
Coquard as 2nd ahead of Roelandts, who couldn`t grab a 2nd stage win. But at least their train showed strength and hence they should definitely try again.
Groenewegen as 4th with another good sprint result.
Behind the unlucky breakaway still ahead of the next. Or at least parts as Barbari in 5th and Bravo as 7th. Only Hadi in between and then Sagan to lead in the main peloton, where Tanner as best Grieg Eftel and Van der Lijke sprint for the top10. Guarnieri and Kennaugh both with yet another fail and also Cavendish today struggled.
