The time trial shuffled the GC quite a lot with Gesink being the big winner obviously. The Dutch didn`t only win but also with a huge margin to get a comfortable lead. Todays stage is unpredictable. Could be for the breakaway, climbers, puncheurs? Officials rate the puncheurs the highest but also have the stage racers in the mix. The finish is going uphill, so a punchy sprint could also do well.
Quite a few top puncheurs in the fiels such as Van Garderen, Skujins, Ginanni, Lutsenko or Sagan. So it`s a first opportunity for those kind of riders.
3 riders in the break with one well known already!
Duchesne
Hansen
Seibeb
which is also the order at the early Cat.3 mountain sprint.
First collected now enough points to be in the virtual KoM lead but the two late climbs are both Cat.1 rated and hence will decide.
Behind the puncheur teams chase next to eBuddy. Gesink obviously being one of the best puncheurs as well! Movistar, Gazelle, Pendleton`s in the mix while Red Bull takes a break as they already had to work a lot for Cavendish on previous stages.
The first Cat.1 is quickly told. Seibeb takes teh max points ahead of Duchesne and Hansen. Behind then the helpers Van der Velde, Brandt as also Gesink and Pluchkin take the remaining points.
Surprisingly 3-4 2nd tier GC riders struggle and were dropped for a moment. Those are Galta, Samwel, Herklotz and Bennett, who made it back into the pack again at the very end though.
Bigger news though as about 10 riders crashed in the descent.
Keinath probably the biggest name as top 15 rider and Tenorio`s main support.
Boily
Lehtinen
De Greef
Levarlet
Squire
Koretzky
Juul-Jensen
Siutsou
Tratnik
the other victims. All able to go on luckily.
The gap to the break dropped to under 2min at teh start of the 2nd pass of the climb. Hansen by the time got caught already but a third rider is soon to be joining again. It`s wildcard rider Chamorro. Normally being Uran`s helper, he gets the freedom to go on his own today. The ITT did not suit him and hence he is already 5'43 behind.
Keinath is looking okay and just making it back to the peloton, which is good news for Pokerstars as he is ahead of the group of crashers.
Other riders though again dropping. Within those the already struggling Bennett, Herklotz, Galta, Samwel. So not ideal for their teams as they surely were hoping for some top20-30 by those. Hopefully their only very weak day.
Also other crash victims such as Koretzky, Boily or Levarlet not fully made it back and reaching the steepest parts it won`t be easy.
Bad luck Keinath. Just being back in the peloton and up to the middle, a huge split sees him once again in the later end. Though he is one of the first riders, who are now trying to jump into the favourite group again. Other riders next to him are Ginanni or Vasyliv.
Keinath and Ginanni at least quickly make it and it`s a 45 rider favourite group now being 2'30 behind the trio of Chamorro, Seibeb and Duchesne.
Chamorro clearly aiming the KoM it seems as he attacked the duo for the 16 points. Seibeb in 2nd and Duchesne in 3rd see the following result:
Both later with 30 points now! Seibeb having the higher category though is the new leader tomorrow.
About 10 riders lost contact to the favourite group up to the top. The most surprising is the 2nd Coldeportes rider. Úran couldn`t follow! Big news for a potential podium or top5 rider. With him Nesset and Ruijgh.
Carapaz, Elissonde, Penasa,
Izagirre are other riders that got dropped recently.
On the long descent Duchesne and Seibeb also get caught as they had no energy left to follow Chamorro.
The Colombian kept his 1'30 gap and only has 10km to go. Can he get todays win to compensate Uran`s struggle?
The final 2,3km are uphill and suit the riders with a fast kick.
Brambilla-Gesink-Machado
Kohl-Nibali-Lecuisinier-Guldhammer
Then Morton-Keinath-Pluchkin-Tenorio-Olivier-Bongiorno-Goos-Kolesnikov-Kudus-Alarcon-Velits. All the team`s leaders in the front rows.
The puncheurs follow in the 2nd half surprisingly as you would expect them to attack on such finish. The 2 climbs though apparently did cost them too much energy.
Chamorro though still with a bit under 1min advantage.
No rider wants to go early though and the big men line up next to each other. Gesink-Machado-Lecuisinier-Tenorio-Nibali-Pluchkin-Keinath-Morton...
600m left and Chamorro struggling now. Only 30s left.
But the favourites cared less about the stage win and more to avoid losing seconds. Their looking at each other rewareded Coldeportes with a nice stage win! Well done Chamorro.
13s later another wildcard rider leads the peloton. Machado shows his ambitions here taking the sprint ahead of Pluchkin. Very welcome bonus seconds surely. Gesink and Lecuisinier next. Keinath as 10th with an impressive come back today and good for the team that he seems to have no injury.
One rider lost contact while being decently placed at the start of the climb. Velits is losing 30s to the other favourites and surely had hoped to avoid such loss.
Behind Brambilla, who worked hard for Gesink in the finale and a bit later also Quintana losing more than 1min today.
Úran losing around three and a half minutes, which is todays downside for Coldeportes.
Bigger losses though to the earlier dropped, who lose between 6-9min! Probably a nice amount for a later attack at least.
