Vuelta a Espana - Stage 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0003.jpg

No prologue or TTT to start the Vuelta. The sprinters immediatly get their chance for the leader jersey in the opener. Hence the startlist is pretty good here despite the 3-4 biggest sprinters participating in other GTs.
The top sprinters are in the following order as well:

191 riders at the start which means one team is already one rider down. It`s Pendleton`s despite some obvious ambitions with Nibali around. Still their roster looks incredibly strong actually with lots of support.

The full podium from 2015 is at the start with Pluchkin-Tenorio-Gesink. Surely 3 riders to watch for also in this year`s edition. Then Guldhammer as only other 2015 top10 rider though.

Add to this the winner of 2014 Alarcon as also the same year`s top10 Machado and Nibali.

Apparently several others such as Velits, Uran, Morton, Lecuisinier, Van den Broeck and so on also would like a mention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0008.jpg

Traditionally the first stage of a GT is a tough day for the breakaway as it`s almost impossible to win with so many teams behind being interested in the leader jersey. Then again it might be the only stage to grab the lead via the morning break.
2 riders only give it a try with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Gougeard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Duchesne.
One big problem is the lack of a KoM on todays stage. So less interesting for many riders.

Behind a mix of sprinter teams and GC teams control the peloton such as Metinvest (Pluchkin), eBuddy (Gesink), Orange (Kennaugh), Grieg (Guarnieri).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0016.jpg

Only 2 tiny points were given on the sprint after Duchesne won ahead of Gougeard.
And still many sprinters go for it. In a close sprint Kennaugh wins ahead of Coquard and Guarnieri.
Behind Enger, Roelandts, Cavendish, Keukeleire and Van der Lijke as other participants.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0021.jpg

With 70 km and a gap of still a bit under 5min the sprinter teams fully take over. Grieg, Red Bull and Orange mainly with Bouygues showing up at times as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0027.jpg

But before the final sprint it`s time for yet another intermediate sprint. This time Kennaugh takes the small points easily ahead of Cavendish and Coquard.
Only change here. Groenewegen this time showed interest while Keukeleire was staying in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0030.jpg

As expected no chance for the breakaway. Gougard is trying it with a last attack but this won`t keep him ahead of the sprinters. With 5km to go they are caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0033.jpg

On the first sprinter stage every team is obviously hoping to have the fastest train or actually to get a train at all.
Today it`s Red Bull, Grieg Eftel and Orange with team support for the final 3km. First surely the strongest it seems.

Riders further behind were able to close the gap on the next kilometer and with 2km to go, Red Bull still having an advantage but Van der Lijke and Enger dangerously behind them.

Orange struggles as Roelandts disturbs Kennaugh to move past Kreder while Groenewegen and Keukeleire try to get behind him.

Coquard on the right trying to find the Red Bull train with Grieg struggling the most as Guarnieri is one of the worst placed sprinters behind but at least has Haddi and Tanner now ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0050.jpg

Red Bull seems to fail their train as both leadouts leave at the same time under the Flamme Rouge.
This gives Kreder a nice advantage and Roelandts, Kennaugh and Groenewegen just behind him.

Van der Lijke going past Cavendish with Enger and Coquard in his slipstream.

Guarnieri on the far right has to take the long sprint with Saber, Jeukeleire and Lay trying to keep contact.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0054.jpg

The left side definitely the fast lane at the moment with Roelandts going into the win. Kennaugh still in a good position despite not having Kreders wheel at first.

Cavendish also starts his sprint now but has to look at both sides.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0057.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Vuelta/mg2016_vuelta_01_PCM0059.jpg

But the road ended too early. Roelandts had the right moment and crosses the line first. Behind him surprisingly Groenewegen today, who had a faster finish than Kennaugh in 3rd.

Cavendish in 4th a bit disappointed as his train should have done better in the final while Holst Enger on a good 5th.

Van der Lijke, Guarnieri, Saber, Coquard and Keukeleire next. In especially Grieg Eftel need to improve their train as well.
