Four cat 1 climbs today but a flat finish - could we see another break win? Can Dekker hold off the stronger climbers? A smattering of clouds but the sun is shining yet again.
Borges isn't allowed a gap with his high GC position so with 64 points up for grabs we could see a new KoM leader, and indeed winner.
Shaw
Mehr-Wenige (2nd in KOM, 28points)
Lane (3rd KoM, 14 points, 2'13" on GC)
Jeannesson (9th KoM, 8 points, 2'05" GC)
Navarro
Barbero, Cuasquer
Gallopin
Lemus Davila and
Malacarne.
On the Col des Planches KoM Jeannesson takes a hard-fought contest. He'd do it again over the next KoM point, which put Mehr-Wenige and the Hugo Boss duo in trouble. It'd take them until the sprint point to rejoin.
The Frenchman would take the third KoM sprint too, giving him the lead which now looks unassailable. He also fractures the break, we'll give you the gaps and details after the descent.
Eastman has a little under 2 minutes to make up and tries his luck on the penultimate climb of the day! He quickly gets half a minute's gap and is mopping up some breakaway members that Jeannesson dropped! Prio-Porto, Porto-Prio, Prorto-Pio - whatever they are this year they're chasing hard!
This moto gives us a good shot of the group's positions on this straight, flat road (never good for breaks) - Navarro, Malacarne and Lane have 40 seconds to the pack whilst a further 30 ahead Shaw has caught Jeannesson. Eastman was caught but is still safely in the pack.
46 seconds the gap for the common English enemies - an Irishman and a Frenchie at the front. The group of 3 in no man's land have been caught. it'll be a struggle for the duo to maintain the gap but if they do to the top of the climb they will be fighting it out for the stage win.
Eastman again! He ends the breakaway dream and is followed closely by Amador (51 seconds down) and Roche - who is just 8 seconds back on Dekker - who's team are controlling tempo. Further back Valls and Roglič try to get into this move. Still 11km to go on this final climb!
That move proved fruitless, however now a group of Amador, Scarponi (2'04"), Nazaret (2'13") and Eastman has 36 seconds.
Roglič attempts the bridge - he also forces a selection of 10 riders including the yellow and green jersey, they are:
Valls,
Slagter
Shikai in the white jersey
Dekker, Lowe
Roche
Kiserlovski
Machado, Vinhas
Intxausti. The gap is 27 seconds to Roglič and another 20 to the leaders. They also have a minute to the 30-rider main group. 8km to go to the summit.
The yellow jersey himself is pacing and he's dropped everyone bar Valls and the Porto duo.
Slagter, Roche and Intxausti are in pursuit though, they're only 20 seconds back, and it's the same gap from the yellow jersey group to the leaders. Just 20km to go and 4km to the top of the mountain.
Dekker reaches the leaders with 2km to go, Machado and Valls can't quite match the pace and this is huge for Dekker's GC win hopes! Vinhas has done his duty and is swerving on the side of the road.
Scarponi with a very smart attack over the crest of the hill as a top descender, Nazaret follows as they recognise the strength of the group! They have a solid lead now and there's another 30 seconds to the next group after, which is Machado and Valls from the chasing group, the three who splintered from the yellow jersey group ( Nazaret, Roche and Intxausti) and a resurgent Rigoberto Úran, who's a man on a mission!
Scarponi is renowned as one of the world's top descenders while Nazaret most definitely isn't. With 10km to go there's 15 seconds between them and 11 to the yellow jersey group. The lattermost group have 45 seconds to the Machado group.
Amador has caught the Brazilian but Scarponi has a huge half a minute with 5.5km left.
Look into my eyes and I will stare into your soul
2km to go and it'll be a close-run thing.
Thomas Dekker - Dream Crusher?
He sure thinks so - but we'll have to go to a photo finish to decide if he beat Roglič - the Slovenian was going much, much faster but the Dutchman had a fantastic position. heartbreak in the last 200m for Scarponi - he won't even make the podium.
An off day for Machado - dropped by the chasing group, he's now with the main "best of the rest" group thanks to a surging Cort Nielsen. This should all but be the GC win for Dekker.
