Tour de Romandie - Stage 5

i.imgur.com/dGxQQHR.jpg

Four cat 1 climbs today but a flat finish - could we see another break win? Can pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Dekker hold off the stronger climbers? A smattering of clouds but the sun is shining yet again.

i.imgur.com/iknq1Wo.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Borges isn't allowed a gap with his high GC position so with 64 points up for grabs we could see a new KoM leader, and indeed winner.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Shaw
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mehr-Wenige (2nd in KOM, 28points)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Lane (3rd KoM, 14 points, 2'13" on GC)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Jeannesson (9th KoM, 8 points, 2'05" GC)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Navarro
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Barbero, Cuasquer
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Gallopin
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Lemus Davila and
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gen.png Malacarne.

i.imgur.com/yAGGprx.jpg

On the Col des Planches KoM pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Jeannesson takes a hard-fought contest. He'd do it again over the next KoM point, which put pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mehr-Wenige and the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Hugo Boss duo in trouble. It'd take them until the sprint point to rejoin.

i.imgur.com/4tUIJxU.jpg

The Frenchman would take the third KoM sprint too, giving him the lead which now looks unassailable. He also fractures the break, we'll give you the gaps and details after the descent.

i.imgur.com/Yqhwokp.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman has a little under 2 minutes to make up and tries his luck on the penultimate climb of the day! He quickly gets half a minute's gap and is mopping up some breakaway members that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Jeannesson dropped! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Prio-Porto, Porto-Prio, Prorto-Pio - whatever they are this year they're chasing hard!

i.imgur.com/tqsAuRt.jpg

This moto gives us a good shot of the group's positions on this straight, flat road (never good for breaks) - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Navarro, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gen.png Malacarne and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Lane have 40 seconds to the pack whilst a further 30 ahead pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Shaw has caught pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Jeannesson. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman was caught but is still safely in the pack.

i.imgur.com/maTpBed.jpg

46 seconds the gap for the common English enemies - an Irishman and a Frenchie at the front. The group of 3 in no man's land have been caught. it'll be a struggle for the duo to maintain the gap but if they do to the top of the climb they will be fighting it out for the stage win.

i.imgur.com/6UG2FRk.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman again! He ends the breakaway dream and is followed closely by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Amador (51 seconds down) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche - who is just 8 seconds back on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Dekker - who's team are controlling tempo. Further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Valls and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič try to get into this move. Still 11km to go on this final climb!

i.imgur.com/esCwISO.jpg

That move proved fruitless, however now a group of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Amador, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Scarponi (2'04"), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar.png Nazaret (2'13") and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Eastman has 36 seconds.

i.imgur.com/Xb1PHWn.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič attempts the bridge - he also forces a selection of 10 riders including the yellow and green jersey, they are:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Valls,
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Slagter
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Shikai in the white jersey
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Dekker, Lowe
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Kiserlovski
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado, Vinhas
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti. The gap is 27 seconds to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič and another 20 to the leaders. They also have a minute to the 30-rider main group. 8km to go to the summit.

i.imgur.com/5uaR3Ki.jpg

The yellow jersey himself is pacing and he's dropped everyone bar pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Valls and the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Porto duo.

i.imgur.com/waeXuDV.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Slagter, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti are in pursuit though, they're only 20 seconds back, and it's the same gap from the yellow jersey group to the leaders. Just 20km to go and 4km to the top of the mountain.

i.imgur.com/24m4qgk.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Dekker reaches the leaders with 2km to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Valls can't quite match the pace and this is huge for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Dekker's GC win hopes! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Vinhas has done his duty and is swerving on the side of the road.

i.imgur.com/kjYM6zv.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Scarponi with a very smart attack over the crest of the hill as a top descender, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar.png Nazaret follows as they recognise the strength of the group! They have a solid lead now and there's another 30 seconds to the next group after, which is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Valls from the chasing group, the three who splintered from the yellow jersey group (pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar.png Nazaret, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti) and a resurgent pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Rigoberto Úran, who's a man on a mission!

i.imgur.com/RDXJVNh.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Scarponi is renowned as one of the world's top descenders while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar.png Nazaret most definitely isn't. With 10km to go there's 15 seconds between them and 11 to the yellow jersey group. The lattermost group have 45 seconds to the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado group.

i.imgur.com/38YKRGe.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Amador has caught the Brazilian but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Scarponi has a huge half a minute with 5.5km left.

i.imgur.com/HsAqFHO.jpg

Look into my eyes and I will stare into your soul

2km to go and it'll be a close-run thing.

i.imgur.com/NG0BvZh.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Thomas Dekker - Dream Crusher?

i.imgur.com/Oe6Gsix.jpg

He sure thinks so - but we'll have to go to a photo finish to decide if he beat pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič - the Slovenian was going much, much faster but the Dutchman had a fantastic position. heartbreak in the last 200m for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Scarponi - he won't even make the podium.

i.imgur.com/jP5LCU6.jpg

An off day for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado - dropped by the chasing group, he's now with the main "best of the rest" group thanks to a surging pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Cort Nielsen. This should all but be the GC win for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Dekker.
