Stage 4 is finally the hilly stage of the Tour of Romandie and we'll be looking forward to the battle for the stage win and if any of the big GC names makes their move before tomorrow's queen stage and the final time trial on day 6. The sunny skies continue as we make our way, once again, around Lake Geneva.
1st, 2nd and 5th in the KoM are present and correct in the morning break, they're
Van Winden
Mehr-Wenige and
Borges respectively. Accompanying them are
Hoogerland
Grippo
Lane and
Shaw to make a potentially lethal group of seven.
Borges absolutely waltzes to the KoM over the Cat 2 Monts de Corsier ahead of Mehr-Wenige giving the German the provisional lead. He'd similarly dominate the intermediate sprint in the small Catholic town of Semsales, with just over 1,00 people, many of whom are out to watch. They'll be disappointed at the lack of Swiss riders on the offensive... again.
Kuboki's Meji, Sanchez Gil's Netia and Roche's Arrinera are the main teams at the front, and they know what a threat members of the group up front pose - the gap with 70km to go is just 1'54"!
It'd almost be comical - despite the dry roads Hoogerland brings down Van Winden and Shaw. The gap was steadily increasing and so this is a shot in the arm to their prospects! In fact, they've been swept up by the pack, leaving the four in front 30km to go with 1'20".
This isn't just for the KoM - this is for the honour of being last man! Borges (mock shock please) attacks his companions with 3km to go on the Col du Pillon, and quickly the gap is opened! He has 27 seconds to the 3 porsuivants , who in turn have just 31 to the peloton!
He's cresting both the 20km banner and the KoM point alone (taking the competition lead as Lane and Mehr-Wenige try to pursue him ( Grippo is swept up) they have quite the lead on the pack, for the groups still in contention it looks like:
18km to go
Peloton
<21"> E3
<52"> E2
<57"> E1
153 riders Mehr-Wenige Lane Borges
As Borges goes through the intermediate sprint with 10.7km to go and 5km to the foot of the ascent to the resort village of Leysin. He has 1'14" to his Aussie pursuer and a further 54 seconds to the pack, whilst Mehr-Wenige was swept up as the pack shedded dead weight - and lots of it as there's just 93 left. Who's to stop Borges winning? Why, in a strange tactical manouvre, his countryman and teammate Oliveira, cracking some serious wattage on the head of the peloton.
Lane is caught but Borges still has 1'45" as he starts the final climb. He's also our provisional GC leader, Kuboki is still in the main bunch but the Portuguese rider only needs 51 seconds to get in the GC lead.
And it seems either his teammates or DS hate our lone escapee: Machado attacks! Roche, Úran and Dekker immediately respond, however Panayotov, Amador and Bibby are in hot pursuit. Euskatel and a lone Meiji rider, you guessed it: Kazushige "Hi Mum!" Kuboki are leading the pack.
Panayotov can't handle the pace and is caught, meanwhile Valls goes and follwing him are Yevgeni "The One That Climbs" Nepomnyachsniy and a bit further back, Ahmed "What do you mean, pick a speciality?" Belgasem and defending champion Sanchez.
Back to the front and Borges has a 1'12" advantage with 2km to go but is again being pursued by a teammate.
Úran bonks and is caught by Amador and Bibby, neither of the trio are going anywhere really. Behind only Valls and Nepom have escaped the pack.
The peloton has split ( Kuboki hasn't given up the dream, is still in the front 38) whilst Valls and Nepom have been joined by
Sanchez Gil
Shikai (his team has)
Kiserlovski and Alizadeh
Talansky and Roglič.
Amador won't let Machado get a single second - he's finally gone solo with 1km to go!
Too shattered to celebrate!
Borges holds off Dekker for the stage win, who will grab the GC lead and puts what could be considered a gap into Machado and Roche, but all three have put over 30 seconds into Amador!
Roglič nips Shikai for 6th in the group of 10 ( Úran and Bibby were caught with no Amador to wheelsuck).
He's earned cult status for his racing, particularly today, but he has to concede the jersey.
