Tour de Langkawi - Stage 6
Selwink
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/P6.jpg

With the GC battle seemingly out of the way, it's time for the sprinters again. Today is the first of 5 flat stages, after which the race will come to an end. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger
and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff are just a few names in the extensive list of candidates for today's stage win. This stage is the longest in the race, and will therefore probably test the stamina of a few riders.

Today's break is away quite soon. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Paul Van der Ploeg (47th @22'15), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Andersen (93th @31'02) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Katrasnik (84th @29'10) decide to have a go.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-1.jpg

After a while 3 riders impressively manage to make a jump, making the break of the day consist of 6. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Valencia (22nd @11'39), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Anton Cooper (49th @22'19) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm_gab.png Thaouta (71th @27'06) join.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-2.jpg

The break gets a max lead of 8 minutes.
The intermediate sprints and KoMs are uncontested so:
1st2nd3rd
Sprint 1KatrasnikVan der PloegAndersen
Sprint 2Van der PloegAndersenThaouta
KoM 1CooperVan der PloegValencia
KoM 2ValenciaVan der PloegThaouta
Sprint 3CooperKatrasnikVan der Ploeg
KoM 3Van der PloegValenciaCooper

With 50km to go the lead has shrunk to 2m53.
With 20km to go the lead is still 1m27. This might mean it gets a bit closer than expected in the end, though of course the big guns will still have their go.
With 15km to go the lead is 1m34. This is becoming really exciting now!

By the time we reach the 10km mark we see Valencia has attacked from the break. He has a 9 second lead on the 5 chasers, who on their turn hold a lead of 1m32 on the pack. It seems like a breakaway victory is being made here.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-3.jpg

With 8.5km to go Valencia is reeled in. 1m45 lead left.

A quick look on the pack shows us that it's mainly Hankook and Sauber making the pace. No sign of Kraftwerk, a factor which may have decided this stage in favor of the break.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-4.jpg

With 5km to go the lead has shrunk to just 1m05. Things are suddenly looking better for the pack, though it would still be a big surprise to see them reeling the break back in.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-5.jpg

The problem of the pack seems to be that the cooperation up front is still very good and the pace is kept high. However, with 3.2km to go Van der Ploeg attacks! A surprising move, seeing that he's normally the fastest sprinter in this group. Still, he does manage to build a small gap.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-6.jpg

Van der Ploeg has been gaining time over the last kilometer, but the question is of course if he can keep his effort on the same level.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-7.jpg

Even though it's just for minor placings, the pack makes some serious efforts in the sprint train. Sauber sets up a dominant train once again, while also Krieger, Mezgec, Colbrelli and the others are placed well in front.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-8.jpg

With 1km to go the gap for Van der Ploeg has only gone down a bit. However, he now seems to be getting a bit tired. Is this the same in the chase? For now the pace in the chase seems to be higher though, with Katrasnik seemingly the strongest.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-9.jpg

In the pack it's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Kip who launches early. Once again he seems to be the strongest sprinter here, this time being hindered by the break.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-10.jpg

Up front Van der Ploeg takes the win though! After a well-timed attack he delivers his team a much-needed win. It's definitely well-deserved for the team, as they have shown attacking spirit and courage throughout the race so far.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-11.jpg

Andersen wins the sprint for 2nd. Valencia outsprints Katrasnik, Cooper and Thaouta come 5th and 6th.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/6-12.jpg

Kip completely collapsed in the end, so it's Mezgec who wins the peloton sprint, ahead of Scully. Stauff and Krieger complete the top-10. All this happens 54 seconds after Van der Ploeg's finish though.
