Tour de Langkawi - Stage 5
Selwink
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/P5.jpg

Time for the queen stage of the Tour de Langkawi. Stage 5 leads us to the Genting Highlands. The stage is only 124 kilometers long, but the climb near the end is an absolute giant. The best climbers of this race should come out on top. It'll be interesting to see if pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký can hang on to his lead. After his dominating win on stage 3 he is obviously the favourite for today though.

We actually have a break today! It consists of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Nommela (112th @17'01), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Manakov (114th @19'54), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Ruffoni (82th @10'26) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm_gab.png Thaouta (74th @10'05).

The sprints are not really battles.

The break doesn't get much space from the pack today. The lead maxes at about 3 minutes.

The leaders start the final climb with 1m24 lead. It's unlikely they'll hold this lead, because this monstrosity of a climb is 22 kilometers long at an average of 7%.

The break doesn't last very long. Under the banner of 20 kilometers the Kraftwerk-led peloton overtakes the final escapee.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-2.jpg

At the beginning of the climb immediately it's very explosive. Gaps start to form everywhere, and of course the weak climbers are dropping back to the rear.

Eventually things clear up a bit. With 14km left to ride 6 riders are leading:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký, Vachon
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Karagobek, Ardila Cano
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Lewis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-3.jpg

30 seconds behind them is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Mat Senan.

The pack still consists of only 12 riders:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Jim, Gaimon
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Baz, Abelouache
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Hirschlein
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Nieve
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Tatarinov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Di Gregorio
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Moreno
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Juodvalkis
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Nakane
They are a minute down on the leading group.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-4.jpg

Up front Sella decides to set the pace. The first victim of this is Vachon, while Mat Senan's efforts seem to end up in a chasse patate.

The pack, where Tatarinov and Abelouchae have been replaced by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Lundberg, is losing ground, just like Mat Senan.

Nieve, Hirschlein, Juodvalkis and Baz seem to have found each other. They distance the rest of the pack. Vachon and Mat Senan seem to be within reach.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-5.jpg

The 5 leaders reach the final 10km with a lead of 1m33 on the pack already, so it seems like there are 5 candidates left for the win.

Hacecky and Sella keep taking their relays. Eventually this also means the end of Ardila Cano. 4 leaders left, just before the steepest part of the climb begins.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-6.jpg

It is on these steepest section where also Lewis's time in the leading group comes to an end. Karagobek, Sella and Hacecky will probably fight it out for the win. If Sella or Karagobek wants the GC they'll have to make up a bit more time though.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-7.jpg

The chase of 4 has left Baz behind (and also Vachon). Mat Senan however has joined them again, making it a group of 4 again. With 6km to go they're 2 minutes behind the 3 leaders, Ardila Cano and Lewis are about a minute ahead of this group, so still within range for these riders.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-8.jpg

With 5.5km to go Hirschlein attacks! Nieve tries to follow, Juodvalkis and Mat Senan can't. The German rider of Xero however manages to leave Nieve behind him.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-9.jpg

Hirschlein soon catches Ardila Cano, and Lewis isn't far away either.

With 3km to go Hirschlein, Ardila Cano and Lewis form a group of 3, which is now the second group in the race.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-10.jpg

Up ahead Hacecky and Sella share the relays, while Karagobek has only been sitting on the wheel. It seems though as if both Sella and Karagobek are satisfied with a good GC spot, and don't want to take risk for the overall win. With 2.5km to go and 1m48 on the second group, they could surely try though?
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-11.jpg

700 meters to go, no accelerations yet. However, it's just a matter of time now.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-12.jpg

Sella goes with 500 meters to go! Hacecky has no trouble following, Karagobek has to let them go.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-13.jpg

Sella holds the lead in the last corner, Hacecky still gives it a bit of a try.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-14.jpg

But in the end, Emmanuele Sella takes the stage win! Hacecky comes 2nd, but seems to have the GC in the pocket.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-15.jpg

Karagobek did an excellent job hanging on for so long, but in the end will have to be satisfied with third.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-16.jpg

Hirschlein takes the ''sprint'' for fourth, with a small gap to Ardila Cano and Lewis.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-17.jpg

Nieve comes in as 7th today, after his strong performance in stage 3 he had surely hoped for more though.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/5-18.jpg

Mat Senan, Juodvalkis and Baz complete today's top-10.
