Tour de Langkawi - Stage 3
Selwink
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/P3.jpg

Today it's time for the first of two mountain stages here in Malaysia. The stage to the Cameron Highlands contains two long climbs. Neither of them is incredibly steep, but it should definitely make way for some gaps. Current leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff will likely lose his lead here to a strong climber.

Just like yesterday 3 riders manage to get away right after the start. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Neil Van der Ploeg (38th @ 17'' ), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Manakov (119th @13'43'' ) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Maccagli (112th @6'09'' ) form the break of the day.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-1.jpg

Before the real action starts Van der Ploeg, Manakov and again Manakov win the intermediate sprints. Manakov also wins the small cat.3 KoM, but that's of course nothing compared to what's ahead of them. The lead of the group is currently (70km to go) at 4m, the max was at about 5 minutes.

At the summit of the Cat.1 climb, Kg Raja, Van der Ploeg shows he's the strongest climber in the group and takes the points. The pack is 3 minutes down.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-2.jpg

But in the pack the fight has also started now! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Kung starts the debates, a bit later pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Moreno try to follow him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Lewis also gives it a go.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-3.jpg

The 4 riders merge after a little while, and gain no less than a minute on the pack. However, they're still 1m33 down on Van der Ploeg and Manakov, while Moccagli is a bit behind them.

25km to go and the favourites merge with the leaders, including Moccagli. The latter is dropped immediately though.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-4.jpg

In the pack chaos has also struck. A group of 8 riders distanced the peloton. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Tatarinov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Maikin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Mat Senan, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Nieve, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Nakane and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Karagobek break off. Unsurprisingly, Stauff and Maikin are dropped rather quickly.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-5.jpg

Soon Sella manages to distance his companions in front, while Tatarinov/Hacecky and Mat Senan leave their chasing companions behind. Group-Hacecky managed to catch up with the group left behind by Sella.

Soon Sella is caught by the chasers, who are joined by Nieve. But then, in the descent towards the foot of the HC climb, drama! Sella crashes. Tatarinov and Kung also can't stay up and crash. All three can continue, but of course this is a major disappointment for these riders.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-6.jpg

Far behind them, 1m52 in fact, the peloton is chasing and finally managed to organize itself. Moccagli, Manakov, Karagobek and Nakane are still between them and the front of the race.

The crash victims end up in the pack, which is seriously closing the gap. At the foot of the climb 1m20 is left for the 5 remaining leaders.

At the climb Van der Ploeg gives it all for his team mate Lewis. This high pace means the end of Moreno's presence in the leader's group. Van der Ploeg, Lewis, Nieve and Hacecky still left in front.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-7.jpg

A bit later Van der Ploeg is, unsurprisingly, dropped as well. In the pack the crash victims are still in front, Sella can be found in the very front of the group.

The pack, thinned out to 31 riders, doesn't make up time. 5km from the summit 1m10 left for the leaders.

Sella, who doesn't seem hurt at all, Di Gregorio and Juodvalkis manage to get a gap from the pack. They soon catch up to Nakane, Van der Ploeg and Moreno, while Karagobek has attacked from this group.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-8.jpg

In front, the leaders sense the looming Karagobek coming closer on the flat section. This is the signal for Hacecky to attack. He gets a gap on Nieve, who on his turn also leaves Lewis behind. Lewis is caught by Karagobek.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-9.jpg

At the summit Hacecky seems to be flying. He has a gap of half a minute on Nieve, and another 40 seconds on the chase, where Lewis and Karagobek have been joined by Sella, Juodvalkis, Nakane and Di Gregorio. The peloton, of 20 riders, is 2 minutes behind Hacecky already. Only 9km to go now.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-10.jpg

In the battle for third (or more?) Juodvalkis and Sella have gapped the other chasers just after the summit.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-11.jpg

The group behind them is reached by two riders who jumped from the pack: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Lundberg and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Baz.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-12.jpg

Sella and Juodvalkis fail to cooperate, so they're soon swallowed again by the group.

With 5km left to ride Hacecky's gap has gone down to 22 seconds on Nieve. This stage isn't over yet!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-13.jpg

Sella, Juodvalkis, Baz and Lewis have dropped their 4 companions.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-14.jpg

2km left to ride: Hacecky's gap is just 16s on Nieve. The 4 chasers are still over a minute down.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-15.jpg

But things didn't change in the final kilometers. Martin Hacecky wins stage 3 of the Tour de Langkawi and delivers Kraftwerk the second stage win in a row! Nieve ends up second.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/3-16.jpg

The sprint for third is won by Baz, ahead of Juodvalkis, Lewis and anti-sprinter Sella. The other 4 chasers took the first 4 places of the pack in the sprint for 8th. Also worth noting is that Kraftwerk is currently leading all 4 classifications.
