Tour de Langkawi - Stage 2
Selwink
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/P2.jpg

After we've had our prologue win for Steensen, it's time for the first road stae. In the 116.5 kilometers the riders have to overcome today before the finish in Kuala Kangsar, there's only one difficulty, namely the Bukit Sumpitan of category 1. Normally it shouldn't harm the sprinters too much, but who knows a sprint might be avoided in the end. Also worth mentioning is that it's a bit windy. If the wind becomes a bit stronger, we might already see echelons here. Nevertheless, riders like Stauff, Kip, Salleh and Scully should be favourites.

Early on in the stage 3 riders try their luck and immediately manage to form today's break. Their names are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Varga (98th @12" ), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto (30th @6" ) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Venturini (36th @6" ). An interesting move by Xero, who obviously want to avoid having to chase in the pack for Scully.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-1.jpg

Sprint #1 is for Varga ahead of Venturini and Novardianto.

At the summit of the climb Venturini easily beats his companions, ensuring himself of the mountains jersey for at least tomorrow. The leading group has a lead of about 5 and a half minutes here, the largest they would have in the end.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-2.jpg

In the pack only GC 10th Rijntjes is dropped on the climb, also GC 20th and lead-out rider for Scully, Gudsell is dropped a bit later on.

Sprint #2, 34km from the line, has the same order as sprint #1 in the front group. The three leaders have 2m24 left for the final kilometers, meaning they'll likely be reeled in at some point during the stage.

20km to go, lead is 1m16.

10km, 33 seconds left. However, the break seems out of juice. In the pack more victims are made due to the high pace, most notable pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Rasmussen, GC 7th.

With 5km to go Venturini has found an extra pair of legs, as he has dropped his companions and still has a 15 second lead left.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-3.jpg

However, 1km later his story comes to an end. A strong train by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Kraftwerk takes the lead, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Hankook also setting up a train.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-4.jpg

Some drama in the middle of the pack though! A crash takes down a few riders. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Eefting's race is over, while other notable victims are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Ariesen.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-5.jpg

Up front the Kraftwerk train took over, which makes the order in the race the following:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Tatarinov - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Maikin - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png King - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Scully - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Gavazzi - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli. Soon other sprinters, such as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Jones, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Boonen join the ranks.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-6.jpg

When Tatarinov finally drops back after a long time leading the group, he drops back, and in the process manages to disrupt many sprinters. Only King and Jones, who fought his way to the front, can follow Stauff and Maikin.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-7.jpg

With 1.2km to go King launches, Jones following him on his wheel. Maikin is still ahead of Stauff. Behind them a big gap to the rest of the field.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-8.jpg

900 meters to go means the end of Maikin, so Stauff launches himself. Has King gone too early, or does the slight downhill to the finish help him? In any case Jones seems to be boxed in.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-9.jpg

With just 500m to go King still leads, Stauff rides at the same speed, but it seems to be the limit for him as well. Jones has to let the stage win slip away.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-10.jpg

With 100m to go they're almost riding next to each other, King still has a small lead. Who will win?
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-11.jpg

It's Stauff! He takes the double in this stage, as he also grabs the GC lead. Ben King comes 2nd after indeed launching too early. Jones and Maikin come 3rd and 4th.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Langkawi/2-12.jpg

Kip dominates the sprint for 5th. Boonen, Colbrelli, Scully, Krieger and Salleh complete the top-10.
