The second TT of the race is expected to go a lot like the first, with Phinney trying to make up for his disappointing race so far, and also trying to displace Sicard on the podium.
Durbridge, shown here catching Maksimov, would be an early pacesetter in a time of 32’26 - 1’08 quicker than anyone else to that point. A better start for him than in the first TT, but the best TTer to that point had been Lammertink so the comparison was difficult to make. But with Dempster on course we would soon get a better comparison.
Dempster would be 35 seconds down, so Durbridge had seemingly set an impressive time. Frederik Frison, Michael Faerk Christensen and Morgan Kneisky would also come within a minute of Durbridge’s time, at 46, 44 and 41 seconds down respectively.
Viennet was another with high expectations for today, but he would disappoint coming in 3rd, 39 seconds behind Durbridge. Uran would also come through in a solid but unspectacular time, 43 seconds back. Taking Durbridge out of it, and 2nd to 7th was covered by only 11 seconds at this point.
Brent Bookwalter starred in the first TT taking 2nd, and was looking to go strongly again here. But he would only end up a provisional 9th, over a minute behind Durbridge. That would soon become a provisional 10th, as Danacik set an impressive time to end up in 7th for now, 45 seconds down.
Ignatiev is a big favourite in any TT he enters, and today is no exception. But he couldn’t beat Durbridge’s time, or even Dempster’s, coming in at 38 seconds down. That time would only be 4 seconds quicker than an impressive Izagirre coming soon after - perhaps enough for him to move up into the GC top 30.
All of the riders had now started their ride, and so the GC contenders started to come through. Arndt would be a rider who suffered, being shown here being caught by Van den Broeck with 3km to go. He would finish 3’10 behind Durbridge, with the Belgian at 1’04.
Jack Bobridge would set a time good enough for provisional 3rd, only 1 second slower than Dempster - and in the process leapfrog Claeys for 9th on GC. However, the gap was too big to Kelderman for him to gain another place on GC.
Kelderman would come through in a generally unimpressive time, but one that should all but secure the Young Riders jersey for him. Velits would fair slightly better, coming in at 42 seconds down in a provisional 8th, but he stood no chance of catching Goos ahead of him in 6th.
Goos started the day 42 seconds behind Koretzky in 5th, and would easily take enough to overhaul the Frenchman, finishing in a time of 33’14. In fact, Koretzky would be passed by Phinney on the course, meaning a new best time may be imminent...
And indeed it would be! Phinney setting a time of 32’00 exactly, 25 seconds quicker than Durbridge’s previous best. He started the day 1’02 behind Sicard, meaning the overall podium looks like a real possibility for him.
Koretzky would be next through, losing 3’10 to Phinney but managing to at least remain ahead of Velits, putting him 6th on GC. Now, Sicard has his chance to show what he can do against Phinney...
Sicard would cross the line in a provisional 18th. But the clock read 33’25, meaning that he would find himself 23 seconds behind Phinney and 4th on GC despite his valiant effort.
The penultimate finisher would be Gesink, and he would set a time of 32’26 - 26 seconds behind Phinney and good enough for 3rd on the stage, and 2nd on the GC.
Finally, the dominator of this race in Trofimov. Today he could have had a day off, but instead he pushed himself to the limit and took an impressive 4th place, 56 seconds behind Phinney. So Phinney takes his 3rd stage win of the race and moves onto the overall podium, while Trofimov just has to stay safe on tomorrow’s flat stage to secure the GC win.
