Tour of California - Stage 6

i.imgur.com/gxt7lf5.png

A short stage of only 128.7km to do, but with plenty of climbing and very little in the way of flat road. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney will hope to regain some of the time lost ahead of the TT, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov and the other puncheurs will aim simply to limit their losses.

The early break was allowed to form with no difficulties, today featuring pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Wallays, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Cuming, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Schachmann, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Ariko. At the summit of the Cat 2 Glendora Ridge Road with 100km to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Ariko would have been dropped, while the remaining quartet would have 2 minutes in advantage, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz winning the sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Schachmann. The peloton would be down to 93 riders at this point, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort the biggest surprise to be dropped.

i.imgur.com/C4MvWZc.png

A crash early on the descent would occur, but nothing too serious it seemed - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Konrad the notable names down, but with plenty of chance to come back with 35km of descending ahead. Then around 5km later another fall, involving pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Gusev, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Danacik and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Koch, who would also have to chase back on. However, the descent would otherwise be notable only for allowing the peloton to swell back to 164 riders - perhaps the route could have used another climb in order to create greater selection?

i.imgur.com/9T39BUr.png

Going through the sprint with 44.5 km to go and the break still had 1’30 of advantage, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Wallays leading the group over ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Schachmann. However, the peloton was closing fast, lead by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Tinkoff. As a result, riders immediately started to dropped, unlikely to see the main group again all race.

i.imgur.com/uLCjZaX.png

With 38km to go, 8km from the top of the Cat 2 Glendora Mountain Road the catch was made by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Shalunov and Pokidov, working for the race leader. As this would happen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Uran was dropped, clearly suffering from his crash yesterday, as also soon would be pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs, 3rd and 7th on GC respectively at the start of the day.

i.imgur.com/I8BKyLt.png

Near the mountain sprint, an attack! 4 riders attempt to breakaway with 2km left in the climb - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Rosch, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Koch. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Stancu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Chiarello would bridge, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Koch taking the Cat 2 ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Rosch. This group of 6 would soon get an advantage of 1 minute on the peloton, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan looking to move up into the top 10 on GC.

i.imgur.com/Hu2cLIZ.png

Up front and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Stancu would make a break for it, but in the peloton more moves were being made. 4 riders attack, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov appears unable to follow. The quartet are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney. All except pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard have teammates up the road, so with 19km to go this is a move to watch. And immediately, they pull a gap of 1 minute! The acceleration also sees the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png duo of Bobridge and Morton dropped from the peloton.

i.imgur.com/wDxqkAm.png

With 15km to go the race situation is as follows:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Stancu
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits and the rest of the attackers +1’11
Peloton, including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Goos +2’15
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys +3’20
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton +3’41
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Bobridge +4’21
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs is 5 minutes down, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer 8 minutes behind.

i.imgur.com/FjeCbN0.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits soon ditch their companions and set off after pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Stancu with 11km to go, quickly increasing their advantage to 1’30 over the peloton, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt attempt to bridge to the remainder of the break. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov is riding like a maniac behind trying to close the gap, but his GC lead doesn’t seem under any threat.

i.imgur.com/Jwv1zE1.png

With 9km to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Stancu, distancing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits in the process. He sits 30 seconds behind, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov at 1 minute, and the remaining GC contenders at 1’30. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys is now at 3 minutes, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Bobridge and Morton 5 minutes down.

i.imgur.com/fO7fa7s.png

And now, with 7km to go pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney manage to distance pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Stancu are going backwards, having been passed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt has dropped back also - being joined by attackers from the peloton in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Samwel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Talansky and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Faiers. Puncheurs such as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman have also dropped back, now 3 minutes behind the leaders and 1 minute behind the likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Goos and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Koch.

i.imgur.com/bDVZvQa.png

The gap is slowly being increased to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov by the leaders, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink fought his way back. So with 3km to go, the race situation is as follows:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov +1’32
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Kirsch +2’00
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Stancu +2’39
A group of 8 containing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Goos, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van den Broeck and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Abal +3’05
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman are 6 minutes down, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys is at 7’25 and Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton are at 9 minutes.

i.imgur.com/SJjfMaI.png

As we pass under the Flamme Rouge, the gap the trio have is 2 minutes to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov, and they have added a minute to their advantage over most of the other groups on the road. But who will take the slow motion sprint here on top of Mount Baldy?

i.imgur.com/bAszRSh.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney launches first and he takes the win here, his second stage win of the race. A gap of 31 seconds is given to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink also, but now we wait for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov.

i.imgur.com/yybdjtW.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov crosses the line 2’47 later, 17 seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Kirsch. Barring a disaster for him, that should surely be the GC won.

i.imgur.com/tTJnMw3.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Stancu are next, losing 4’01. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Goos, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Samwel complete the top 10, coming in 4’23 down.

i.imgur.com/h2zKKyz.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman lose just over 10 minutes, but remain in the GC top 10. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys loses 13’30, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Bobridge and Morton are even further back at 14’44. The biggest loser today though is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer, losing 24 minutes and dropping to 21st on GC. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Vlatos and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Senyenov abandon having been given as OTL.
