A short stage of only 128.7km to do, but with plenty of climbing and very little in the way of flat road. Sicard, Gesink and Phinney will hope to regain some of the time lost ahead of the TT, while Trofimov and the other puncheurs will aim simply to limit their losses.
The early break was allowed to form with no difficulties, today featuring Wallays, Cuming, Schachmann, Herklotz and Ariko. At the summit of the Cat 2 Glendora Ridge Road with 100km to go, Ariko would have been dropped, while the remaining quartet would have 2 minutes in advantage, with Herklotz winning the sprint ahead of Schachmann. The peloton would be down to 93 riders at this point, with Monfort the biggest surprise to be dropped.
A crash early on the descent would occur, but nothing too serious it seemed - Boily and Konrad the notable names down, but with plenty of chance to come back with 35km of descending ahead. Then around 5km later another fall, involving Gusev, Danacik and Koch, who would also have to chase back on. However, the descent would otherwise be notable only for allowing the peloton to swell back to 164 riders - perhaps the route could have used another climb in order to create greater selection?
Going through the sprint with 44.5 km to go and the break still had 1’30 of advantage, with Wallays leading the group over ahead of Schachmann. However, the peloton was closing fast, lead by Tinkoff. As a result, riders immediately started to dropped, unlikely to see the main group again all race.
With 38km to go, 8km from the top of the Cat 2 Glendora Mountain Road the catch was made by Shalunov and Pokidov, working for the race leader. As this would happen, Uran was dropped, clearly suffering from his crash yesterday, as also soon would be Meyer and Schreurs, 3rd and 7th on GC respectively at the start of the day.
Near the mountain sprint, an attack! 4 riders attempt to breakaway with 2km left in the climb - Sagan, Rosch, Boily and Koch. Stancu and Chiarello would bridge, with Koch taking the Cat 2 ahead of Rosch. This group of 6 would soon get an advantage of 1 minute on the peloton, with Sagan looking to move up into the top 10 on GC.
Up front and Stancu would make a break for it, but in the peloton more moves were being made. 4 riders attack, and Trofimov appears unable to follow. The quartet are Sicard, Gesink, Velits and Phinney. All except Sicard have teammates up the road, so with 19km to go this is a move to watch. And immediately, they pull a gap of 1 minute! The acceleration also sees the duo of Bobridge and Morton dropped from the peloton.
With 15km to go the race situation is as follows:
Stancu
Phinney, Sicard, Gesink, Velits and the rest of the attackers +1’11
Peloton, including Trofimov, Koretzky and Goos +2’15
Claeys +3’20
Morton +3’41
Bobridge +4’21
Schreurs is 5 minutes down, with Meyer 8 minutes behind.
Phinney, Sicard, Gesink and Velits soon ditch their companions and set off after Stancu with 11km to go, quickly increasing their advantage to 1’30 over the peloton, while Trofimov and Arndt attempt to bridge to the remainder of the break. Trofimov is riding like a maniac behind trying to close the gap, but his GC lead doesn’t seem under any threat.
With 9km to go, Phinney, Sicard and Gesink catch Stancu, distancing Velits in the process. He sits 30 seconds behind, with Arndt and Trofimov at 1 minute, and the remaining GC contenders at 1’30. Claeys is now at 3 minutes, with Bobridge and Morton 5 minutes down.
And now, with 7km to go Sicard and Phinney manage to distance Gesink. Velits and Stancu are going backwards, having been passed by Trofimov, while Arndt has dropped back also - being joined by attackers from the peloton in Samwel, Talansky and Faiers. Puncheurs such as Koretzky and Kelderman have also dropped back, now 3 minutes behind the leaders and 1 minute behind the likes of Goos and Koch.
The gap is slowly being increased to Trofimov by the leaders, as Gesink fought his way back. So with 3km to go, the race situation is as follows:
Phinney, Sicard and Gesink
Trofimov +1’32
Kirsch +2’00
Velits and Stancu +2’39
A group of 8 containing Goos, Arndt, Van den Broeck and Abal +3’05
Sagan, Koretzky and Kelderman are 6 minutes down, Claeys is at 7’25 and Bobridge and Morton are at 9 minutes.
As we pass under the Flamme Rouge, the gap the trio have is 2 minutes to Trofimov, and they have added a minute to their advantage over most of the other groups on the road. But who will take the slow motion sprint here on top of Mount Baldy?
Phinney launches first and he takes the win here, his second stage win of the race. A gap of 31 seconds is given to Sicard and Gesink also, but now we wait for Trofimov.
Trofimov crosses the line 2’47 later, 17 seconds ahead of Kirsch. Barring a disaster for him, that should surely be the GC won.
Velits and Stancu are next, losing 4’01. Goos, Arndt and Samwel complete the top 10, coming in 4’23 down.
Koretzky and Kelderman lose just over 10 minutes, but remain in the GC top 10. Claeys loses 13’30, while Bobridge and Morton are even further back at 14’44. The biggest loser today though is Meyer, losing 24 minutes and dropping to 21st on GC. Vlatos and Senyenov abandon having been given as OTL.
