Tour of South Africa - Stage 3
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/ToSA/mg2016_tosa_03_PCM0118.jpg

2 days for the GC and now a short "break" and an opportunity for the sprinters? Potentially yes, but bookies have a mix of GC riders and hilly sprinters up there. Hence Modolo or Aregger as best sprinters need to fight against the top puncheurs, who look for bonus seconds.

4 riders in the break and yet again the African Eritel squad seems to be happy to suffer in the wind on their home continent. Today it`s once again Madagascan pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Adriamihajanarivo despite the lack of KoM points!
Also nice to see two home riders from South Africa in the break including the National Champion even:

Last but not least young Swiss talent pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Page.

Modolo and Aregger were mentioned. But as Ferrero is working at the front, we need to look on more riders. They have quite a few hilly sprinters. On the opener Navardauskas looked great. Also Barbin, Pozzato or Pavarin though combine uphill and sprint skills. Great team for such route surely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/ToSA/mg2016_tosa_03_PCM0135.jpg

11km and still a bit more than 1min for Kriek, who attacked the group and is solo a bit ahead of the others.
Smart tactic as this puts all other teams under big pressure. Not only the fastest man behind in Modolo, also in front here at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/ToSA/mg2016_tosa_03_PCM0138.jpg

But his attempt is over with a bit more than 3km to go. The armada of Ferrero and Vontobel riders gave him no chance. Therefore not the best preparation for the sprint trains.

Ferrrero with Walker-Pavarin-Navardauskas-Pozzato with Bilbao hanging behind them.

Vontobel with Schär-Wyss-Kohler-Aregger and Ulissi behind them.

All others such as Roche, Barbin, Costa, Dowsett, Modolo!, Ben Nasser, Di Maggio, Roux just behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/ToSA/mg2016_tosa_03_PCM0150.jpg

Bigger news behind though. The last couple hills and the high pace see a massive split with only 27 riders in front.
Bystrom and the Eritel riders are behind! Same goes for Schumacher and Gilbert.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/ToSA/mg2016_tosa_03_PCM0154.jpg

Bystrom on his own makes it back and also the others really go fast trying to close the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/ToSA/mg2016_tosa_03_PCM0156.jpg

Back to the front where the real sprint starts with just 1km to go. Lots of Ferrero up there. Pavarin-Pozzato-Navardauskas. In the mix also Wyss and Aregger and Bilbao.
The GC riders and Modolo in the next 5-10 riders. The Strava sprinter probably a bit too far behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/ToSA/mg2016_tosa_03_PCM0161.jpg

Pavarin still in the lead and neither Pozzato nor Navardauskas seem to pass him.
Instead Bilbao in his slipstream and Aregger on the other side come fast.

Ulissi, Barbin and Modolo a bit behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/ToSA/mg2016_tosa_03_PCM0163.jpg

4 Ferrero riders in the top9 spots. Though the actual leadout going strongest!
But he struggles now against Aregger`s speed and also Ulissi on the attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/ToSA/mg2016_tosa_03_PCM0165.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/ToSA/mg2016_tosa_03_PCM0167.jpg

And the Vontobel sprinter takes it. He clearly was faster in the end and is passing Pavarin just meters ahead of the line.

Ulissi in 3rd shows a nice sprint but started from too far behind. Hence only 3rd for him but bonus seconds grabbed!

Bilbao with the right positioning in 4th ahead of Modolo, who surely had hoped for more.

Good news for the dropped riders. 66 riders in total in the first group. No big name really lost time here.
