Another hilly stage, this one shorter at 200.5km. It appears that the stage is more mountainous, giving the edge to the likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman. But perhaps today we see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney gain time back on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard in the GC lead?

i.imgur.com/DSWkCbQ.png

As we reach the Cat 3 that starts the day after 23km, a three man lead group has formed. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky leads over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan, ahead of KoM leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander. Further down the climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Bratashcuk is fighting to catch this trio, and does as soon as the descent starts. Already, riders are being dropped rapidly from the peloton, but no big names as of yet. This group leads the peloton by nearly 4 minutes at this point. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Wohler and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Minoungou sit in the no man’s land between the two groups, soon to be swept up.

i.imgur.com/4fOMEyG.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky ditch their companions near the top of the first Cat 1 of the day. The peloton is only 2’20 down at this time, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer attempts to bridge. Meanwhile, the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png duo of Faiers and Izagirre have been dropped already, as has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky would win his second KoM sprint of the day, again ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan - with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Bratashcuk 15 seconds behind in 3rd. Only 50km into the stage, and the peloton was already down to 76 riders - before fracturing further on the descent, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland crashed, taking down a number of his teammates including his leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort.

i.imgur.com/8LPBKDE.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Bratashcuk would successfully bridge, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander was however finding it more challenging, while the peloton regained some members on the descent - but not pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Vsyna would also abandon from his injuries of a few days earlier. Eventually, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander would make it back on the Cat 2 Saratoga Gap, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky would finish 1st and 2nd, gapping the others in the process - though with the exception of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander they would soon return, the American unable to do so. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort was also now back in the peloton.

i.imgur.com/GIJS6M2.png

A crash in the peloton on this descent! And some big names are down, including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Uran, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Ignatiev, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Abal - and the perpetually unlucky pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Edmondson would also be forced to abandon as a result.

i.imgur.com/MttksOe.png

The break would crest the Cat 1 with 81km to go, with a lead of nearly 8 minutes over the peloton. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer would again win ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, but the Frenchman would take the KoM lead provisionally over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Uran was now 5 minutes behind the peloton, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Abal also having been tailed off.

i.imgur.com/WLb4eul.png

The pattern would continue, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer beating pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky on the Cat 3 with 57km to go. However, in the peloton, the pace was ever increasing, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kudus being the latest GC contender having to let go. And with 50km to go, an elite group of 9 appeared to have formed.

i.imgur.com/vLVLi3O.png

In this group? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard, Kreder and Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Wallays and Claeys, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink. They found themselves 1 minute ahead of the 15 rider peloton, featuring pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits. Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky would head pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer on the Cat 3.

i.imgur.com/NwM4hAQ.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kreder would soon be dropped on the climb, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov would strike out alone. Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton would attempt to bridge, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney found himself already at 2 minutes down to the other favourites, and more to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov!

i.imgur.com/fpQv6Af.png

The elite puncheurs would soon drop pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard, with him falling back to the group of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits in a group even further back, as is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van den Broeck. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan would meanwhile win the intermediate sprint, although pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov would now join the front group - 2 minutes ahead of group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink and 4 minutes ahead of the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney group, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits a minute further behind.

i.imgur.com/WCpHN1A.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer would win on the Cat 3, with the race situation looking fractured. Here’s a nice picture to explain it all with 25km to go. As you can see, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink is also now falling back, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Bobridge gaining ground, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits nowhere to be seen - now 7’15 behind the leaders! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky would bag another Cat 3 for his collection also, with the group fragmenting in the process.

i.imgur.com/t5QONWL.png

Attack! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard want to salvage something with 13km left, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Goos impressively joins them. Cresting the Cat 4 with 10km to go, the race situation is as follows:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer +46
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan +1’11
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Bratashcuk and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Bobridge +2’41
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys +3’26
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman +4’08
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs +6’31
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Goos +6’52
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits is over 9 minutes down, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van den Broeck 11’30 down, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Abal at 18 minutes and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Uran at 22 minutes

i.imgur.com/w3Z9PdS.png

The summit of the final climb comes with 4.5km left, and the situation has changed slightly by then:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov +48
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan +1’01
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer +1’21
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Bobridge +3’04
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Bratashcuk and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys +4’19
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman +4’55
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs +6’12
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink +7’51
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Houle, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Goos +8’17
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits is over 10 minutes down now, and the others even further back!

i.imgur.com/njgPrxu.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky takes a well deserved victory! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan follow him home, and now we wait for the other GC contenders.

i.imgur.com/DQHEfY2.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys are 4th, 5th and 6th respectively, all arriving individually. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Bratashcuk is 7th, while the duo of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman take 8th and 9th. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink completes the top 10, coming it at around 8 minutes according to the clock.

i.imgur.com/m7fGJwm.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney arrives 9 minutes down, possibly gapping pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard in the process - but surely his GC hopes must be over? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits finds it even worse, losing over 11 minutes. The biggest loser though is surely pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Uran, who loses nearly 42 minutes after his crash. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov will take a commanding GC lead of over 3 minutes to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky though, and well ahead of his rivals. 21 riders are also given as being OTL or having withdrawn from crashes, mainly sprinters and TTers such as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Guardini and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Mottin.
