Another hilly stage, this one shorter at 200.5km. It appears that the stage is more mountainous, giving the edge to the likes of Trofimov, Gesink and Kelderman. But perhaps today we see Phinney gain time back on Sicard in the GC lead?
As we reach the Cat 3 that starts the day after 23km, a three man lead group has formed. Koretzky leads over Sagan, ahead of KoM leader Selander. Further down the climb, Bratashcuk is fighting to catch this trio, and does as soon as the descent starts. Already, riders are being dropped rapidly from the peloton, but no big names as of yet. This group leads the peloton by nearly 4 minutes at this point. Wohler and Minoungou sit in the no man’s land between the two groups, soon to be swept up.
Sagan and Koretzky ditch their companions near the top of the first Cat 1 of the day. The peloton is only 2’20 down at this time, and Meyer attempts to bridge. Meanwhile, the duo of Faiers and Izagirre have been dropped already, as has Herklotz. Koretzky would win his second KoM sprint of the day, again ahead of Sagan - with Bratashcuk 15 seconds behind in 3rd. Only 50km into the stage, and the peloton was already down to 76 riders - before fracturing further on the descent, as Hofland crashed, taking down a number of his teammates including his leader Monfort.
Bratashcuk would successfully bridge, followed by Meyer. Selander was however finding it more challenging, while the peloton regained some members on the descent - but not Monfort. Vsyna would also abandon from his injuries of a few days earlier. Eventually, Selander would make it back on the Cat 2 Saratoga Gap, where Meyer and Koretzky would finish 1st and 2nd, gapping the others in the process - though with the exception of Selander they would soon return, the American unable to do so. Monfort was also now back in the peloton.
A crash in the peloton on this descent! And some big names are down, including Uran, Ignatiev, Talansky, Abal - and the perpetually unlucky Monfort. Edmondson would also be forced to abandon as a result.
The break would crest the Cat 1 with 81km to go, with a lead of nearly 8 minutes over the peloton. Meyer would again win ahead of Koretzky, but the Frenchman would take the KoM lead provisionally over Selander. Uran was now 5 minutes behind the peloton, with Monfort and Abal also having been tailed off.
The pattern would continue, with Meyer beating Koretzky on the Cat 3 with 57km to go. However, in the peloton, the pace was ever increasing, with Kudus being the latest GC contender having to let go. And with 50km to go, an elite group of 9 appeared to have formed.
In this group? Trofimov, Kelderman, Bobridge, Sicard, Kreder and Schreurs, Wallays and Claeys, and Gesink. They found themselves 1 minute ahead of the 15 rider peloton, featuring Morton, Phinney and Velits. Meanwhile, Koretzky would head Meyer on the Cat 3.
Kreder would soon be dropped on the climb, while Trofimov would strike out alone. Meanwhile Morton would attempt to bridge, while Phinney found himself already at 2 minutes down to the other favourites, and more to Trofimov!
The elite puncheurs would soon drop Sicard, with him falling back to the group of Phinney, with Velits in a group even further back, as is Van den Broeck. Sagan would meanwhile win the intermediate sprint, although Trofimov would now join the front group - 2 minutes ahead of group Gesink and 4 minutes ahead of the Sicard and Phinney group, with Velits a minute further behind.
Meyer would win on the Cat 3, with the race situation looking fractured. Here’s a nice picture to explain it all with 25km to go. As you can see, Gesink is also now falling back, with Claeys and Bobridge gaining ground, and Velits nowhere to be seen - now 7’15 behind the leaders! Koretzky would bag another Cat 3 for his collection also, with the group fragmenting in the process.
Attack! Phinney and Sicard want to salvage something with 13km left, and Goos impressively joins them. Cresting the Cat 4 with 10km to go, the race situation is as follows:
Koretzky
Meyer +46
Trofimov and Sagan +1’11
Bratashcuk and Bobridge +2’41
Claeys +3’26
Kelderman +4’08
Gesink, Morton and Schreurs +6’31
Phinney, Boily, Sicard and Goos +6’52
Velits is over 9 minutes down, Arndt and Van den Broeck 11’30 down, Abal at 18 minutes and Uran at 22 minutes
The summit of the final climb comes with 4.5km left, and the situation has changed slightly by then:
Koretzky
Trofimov +48
Sagan +1’01
Meyer +1’21
Bobridge +3’04
Bratashcuk and Claeys +4’19
Kelderman +4’55
Schreurs +6’12
Gesink +7’51
Phinney, Boily, Houle, Sicard, Morton and Goos +8’17
Velits is over 10 minutes down now, and the others even further back!
Koretzky takes a well deserved victory! Trofimov and Sagan follow him home, and now we wait for the other GC contenders.
Meyer, Bobridge and Claeys are 4th, 5th and 6th respectively, all arriving individually. Bratashcuk is 7th, while the duo of Schreurs and Kelderman take 8th and 9th. Gesink completes the top 10, coming it at around 8 minutes according to the clock.
Phinney arrives 9 minutes down, possibly gapping Sicard in the process - but surely his GC hopes must be over? Velits finds it even worse, losing over 11 minutes. The biggest loser though is surely Uran, who loses nearly 42 minutes after his crash. Trofimov will take a commanding GC lead of over 3 minutes to Koretzky though, and well ahead of his rivals. 21 riders are also given as being OTL or having withdrawn from crashes, mainly sprinters and TTers such as Guardini and Mottin.
