Welcome to the 12th stage of this years Giro d'Italia and welcome to the Queen stage of the race. Today we have the 2nd hardest stage on the route and the selections will be massive today. Expect to see a sudden change in the GC, where every rider is at risk of losing his GC spot. That is both for the mountains and for possible crashes, that seems to have appeared randomly, thus setting the mark on every rider to beccome next.
As always it begins with a breakaway and what a chance they have to set their mark on the KoM standings. Yep, there are max 58 KoM points in total and they could all go to one rider. It could introduce a new contender into the competition or give a rider supremacy for the rest of the race.
All we know for now is that the break will contain these riders
Daniele Dall'Oste
Steven Kruijswijk
Oscar Solis
Kristian Dyrnes
Costa Seibeb
Andrea Manfredi
Jorge Abreu
Yannick Stoltz
Jesus Del Nero
Kristian Jensen
The sum of all fears is a beautiful phrase, but in the context of a crash it is the opposite. We do not have the biggest names, more like forgotten names in this race down. The list of riders down include the likes of Guarnieri and Boivin, David Tanner is the first rider to disband today!
The break looks to have found a better understanding for each other than yesterday. This is showcased with the break already having 5 minutes on the pack, with only 3 km left of the first climb of Passo Valiparola. They will look to increase this lead further after the climb for sure.
Kristian Dyrnes takes the first 10 points of the day ahead of Dall'Oste, who grabs another 8 points to extend his lead in the KoM competition. It will be hard to challenge the Italian from here and onwards.
On the descend of Passo Valiparola we have another crash and this will only be a common appearance from here and on, as the Mountain stages have lots of sharp corners. This is also the case and an extensive line of riders are down on the tarmac:
Wisniowski
Dzamastagic
Sütterlin
Malori
Sosnitskiy
The latter also ends up being the 2nd rider to disband for today. The reports have not showcased this, but Sosnitskiy has pulled the pack on every mountain stage so far. He has been a key rider and has always been on the current leaders side. Pluchkin has lost a key helper here and he will be more vulnerable from here
Keinath and De Bie are the next key riders to fall victim to the crashes. Let's hope these two riders are not injured. Nerz crashed into them in the aftermath
Meanwhile the break leaves the deadly descent with no harm done and collected with 5 minutes to the pack, that still has about 150 riders in it. They are about to enter the first of 3 climbs combined. Starting with one of the hardest climbs in the years Giro; Passo Duran. This climb features 12 km spread out with an average climb percentage of 8.1%. This might not seem like much, but the climbs has many sections all alien to one another.
Kruijswijk gets over the climb of Passo Duran first and collects the 16 points on the top. On his hunt for the KoM sprint he left behind Solis and Dyrnes. It seems the break has really cracked, as from there Dall'Oste is in 4th position further down. The rest are all in groups of 1/2 down to the pack.
come in that Keinath has lost contact with the pack and is sailing down the order. He seems to be badly injured sadly. It seems to be the end of the Germans GC chances. Meanwhile the pack has dropped its pace and now has 10½ minute up to Kruijswijk and only consist of 68 riders
Kruijswijk gets over the 2nd last climb alone with another 16 points and now 4 minutes down to Solis being the cloest in pursuit and with 13 minutes down to the Favorite group. It really seems that Kruijswijk has caught the pack with it's pants down and Pluchkin isn't willing to defend his role as leader of the race.
It is really an outrageous lead that Kruijswijk has been give and now have 12 minutes down to Pluchkin and the others while being provisionally in 4th place! He really could enter the Top 10 if he manage to hold them off with only one climb left.
He takes on for the final climb of Passo Giau, the hardest climb in this race with it's 10½ km across an average percentage of 8.6 % and always changing the pace with it's many sections! He looks like a sure stage winner already
The pack still have 51 riders, so it is not like they don't have the manpower to cooperate. For now the dutch has 3 km to the top and the gap is still on about 12 minutes. The pack do have 6 km left of the climb and attacks are still not on the table yet
Kruijswijk is all alone in the world as he takes the 16 points here on Passo Giau! 16 km of descending awaits the dutch and also for him to know how much he will win with. He is still 7 minutes ahead of Solis and 12½ ahead of Pluckin and the pack! It is now up for the pack to decide how much they will allow the dutch to gain
Denifl
Henao Montoya
Wellens
Olivier
Alarcon
takes a last look at a struggling Pluchkin and goes for an attack with 1.7 km left of the climb. It is a very late attack and perhaps we will see some weakness from the Moldovian. Madrazo on the other hand doesn't react either, so it is very interesting still.
Nope, Madrazo does seem to catch made by the attack and sets the 1 km marker as a sign for him to attack. He is joined by Guldhammer and everyone seems to be leaving the GC leader
Denifl gets over the climb first of the favorites with a 30 seconds gap to Henao. The rest of the GC favorites looks to be alone, but we might see them collected on the descend.
Meanwhile Madrazo joins Alarcon at the top with a minute down to Pluchkin and Guldhammer. Also time shows Kruijswijk is now down to 10 minutes between him and Pluchkin. So the dutch might still not make it into the Top 5 longer, but for sure he is in the Top 10 for sure. It still seems like the GC favorites should've done this earlier
On the descent Denifl is joined by the other attackers. The pack was not eager with the and grants the GC leader an helping hand. Thus the gap is just under a minute between them. Still this means that Alarcon is in the virtual lead and Kruijswijk could end up taking Keinath's lost Top 10 ranking
Steven Kruijswijk does not have to make his master nervous anymore and takes his 2nd stage win here at the Giro! As he gets in the reports suggest the virtual gap is 9½ minutes to Pluchkin, but they can still catch a lot
Pluckin gets back into the lead with outside help, as 5 km before finish the gap is down to 30 seconds. There are 8 bonification seconds waiting for 3rd place though! Solis is sure to take the 2nd place though, so it coulds till be possible for Alarcon.
Solis takes 2nd place while we can see Madrazo leading the sprint for 3rd in the background! They did come close in the end...
Madrazo takes 3rd place ahead of Henao and Alarcon. Thus it does not seem to be enough to take the GC for today.
Pluchkin comes in a long the rest, he had to depend on outside help today and can be relieved to have the GC lead still! It did seem that he was in dire need here and it is to the shame of the other GC favorites. They needed to attack earlier than what was done, so if anyone is to blame it is them.
