The second flat stage of the race is another opportunity for the sprinters to mess up a simple chase if they feel like it, or to actually make life easy for themselves on a reasonably flat 173km parcours. Mohs, Ciolek and Cavendish are once again the favourites.
It seems today is the day the peloton is finally feeling somewhat benevolent, as four riders are allowed to get away with little resistance. Minoungou is there as ever, joined by Ariko, Vandousselaere and Raileanu. As the break is forming, chaos erupts in the peloton - less than 10km into the stage...
A series of crashes and a split ensues. However, no one is really pushing so soon everything is back together. Herklotz, Coquard and Chernetskiy seem to be the biggest names down, and they find themselves cast adrift - though they soon return to the peloton. Herklotz seems to be struggling the most, as he seems unable to catch back onto the other crashers, let alone the peloton.
The break rolls through the first intermediate sprint uncontested, with Vandousselaere leading over Minoungou and Raileanu. Meanwhile, after a 25km solo chase Herklotz would be back in the peloton - even if he is sore tonight, he can sleep on the bed of cash he’s been paid for his “potential” (also known as his manager’s weird obsession with him). The second intermediate sprint would just be a repeat of the first, except with Ariko finding himself in 3rd ahead of Raileanu.
Literally nothing happened between then and the Cat 3 with 88km to go, won by Ariko ahead of Vandousselaere and Raileanu. The 6 minutes between then and the peloton passing would have been more exciting for the spectators than the race itself at this point, believe me. There would then be a crash on the descent, with Aasvold and Ruijgh the biggest names going down. Bulgarelli and Agostini would abandon as a result. The 9 remaining crashers would make it back, apart from Delaplace and Ruijgh.
The break would still have 2’20 in advantage as it rolled through the final intermediate sprint with 33km to go, Vandousselaere making it 3/3 for him, with Minoungou in second and Ariko in 3rd. Thanks to the efforts of Pokerstars, the gap was steadily decreasing and the catch was surely about to be made, was it not?
Perhaps not, as with 15km to go the gap was still at 1’20, and 5km later it still remained at 1’05. This would be close surely, with the peloton stretched out as the sprinters teams laid down a formidable pace for everyone to follow. Injured riders such as Kosic and Laizer found themselves shelled out of the back, as later so would the duo of Gougeard and Vlatos. Not a good race for them so far on the injury front!
With 4km to go and the gap at 40 seconds, Vandousselaere decided to go on the attack, rapidly distancing his companions. In the peloton, and are at the front, but finding themselves running out of leadout men due to the chase.
As was pass under the 1.5km to go mark, Vandousselaere leads by 28 seconds still. Pokerstars and have successfully created trains, with Goss and Porsev following wheels, while the train for Cavendish is a long way back, as are the likes of Grosu, Coquard and Castaneda.
700m to go and Vandousselaere looks likely to be caught, with just 10 seconds of advantage. Mohs and Ciolek are about to launch from the front, with Porsev, Grosu and Goss just behind. In the third row, Kennaugh, Cavendish and Coquard must surely be out of the mix now?
With 400m to go, Vandousselaere is caught after his valiant effort. Mohs, Ciolek and Porsev are neck and neck, with Goss, Kennaugh and Maksimov breathing down their necks.
100m to go and it’s still too close to call! Ciolek looks to have the edge, but Kennaugh is moving fast from behind - and Cavendish has finally made an appearance. Who will take this?
We have a photo finish between Mohs and Ciolek! We must wait for the decision of the race jury, who give the victory to… Gerald Ciolek! Porsev is an impressive 3rd, ahead of Kennaugh and Goss. Cavendish will meanwhile have to settle only for 10th today.
Gaps are reported in the peloton, but we will have to see what the race director decides before we confirm anything. Many favourites will be hoping not to lose time here, and indeed they don’t - a degree of leniency being given.
However, a larger group of around 100 riders is recorded as having lost 2 minutes in the run-in. The biggest names are Sagan, Vasyliv , Koretzky, Izagirre and Herklotz - but fortunately no major GC contenders are caught up - a cautionary tale for them though.
