Tour of California - Stage 4

i.imgur.com/IlgMb7j.png

The second flat stage of the race is another opportunity for the sprinters to mess up a simple chase if they feel like it, or to actually make life easy for themselves on a reasonably flat 173km parcours. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish are once again the favourites.

i.imgur.com/IMFhLFA.png

It seems today is the day the peloton is finally feeling somewhat benevolent, as four riders are allowed to get away with little resistance. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd_bur.png Minoungou is there as ever, joined by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Ariko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vandousselaere and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Raileanu. As the break is forming, chaos erupts in the peloton - less than 10km into the stage...

i.imgur.com/CnMgRBi.png

A series of crashes and a split ensues. However, no one is really pushing so soon everything is back together. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Chernetskiy seem to be the biggest names down, and they find themselves cast adrift - though they soon return to the peloton. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz seems to be struggling the most, as he seems unable to catch back onto the other crashers, let alone the peloton.

i.imgur.com/AIioczZ.png

The break rolls through the first intermediate sprint uncontested, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vandousselaere leading over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd_bur.png Minoungou and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Raileanu. Meanwhile, after a 25km solo chase pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz would be back in the peloton - even if he is sore tonight, he can sleep on the bed of cash he’s been paid for his “potential” (also known as his manager’s weird obsession with him). The second intermediate sprint would just be a repeat of the first, except with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Ariko finding himself in 3rd ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Raileanu.

i.imgur.com/VpNO8NS.png

Literally nothing happened between then and the Cat 3 with 88km to go, won by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Ariko ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vandousselaere and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Raileanu. The 6 minutes between then and the peloton passing would have been more exciting for the spectators than the race itself at this point, believe me. There would then be a crash on the descent, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Aasvold and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Ruijgh the biggest names going down. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc_bra.png Bulgarelli and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Agostini would abandon as a result. The 9 remaining crashers would make it back, apart from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Delaplace and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Ruijgh.

i.imgur.com/SBHgaTB.png

The break would still have 2’20 in advantage as it rolled through the final intermediate sprint with 33km to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vandousselaere making it 3/3 for him, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd_bur.png Minoungou in second and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Ariko in 3rd. Thanks to the efforts of Pokerstars, the gap was steadily decreasing and the catch was surely about to be made, was it not?

i.imgur.com/m8GQY3L.png

Perhaps not, as with 15km to go the gap was still at 1’20, and 5km later it still remained at 1’05. This would be close surely, with the peloton stretched out as the sprinters teams laid down a formidable pace for everyone to follow. Injured riders such as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Kosic and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Laizer found themselves shelled out of the back, as later so would the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png duo of Gougeard and Vlatos. Not a good race for them so far on the injury front!

i.imgur.com/52djNIU.png

With 4km to go and the gap at 40 seconds, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vandousselaere decided to go on the attack, rapidly distancing his companions. In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png are at the front, but finding themselves running out of leadout men due to the chase.

i.imgur.com/507YsQs.png

As was pass under the 1.5km to go mark, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vandousselaere leads by 28 seconds still. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Pokerstars and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png have successfully created trains, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Porsev following wheels, while the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png train for Cavendish is a long way back, as are the likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Castaneda.

i.imgur.com/yIziFGR.png

700m to go and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vandousselaere looks likely to be caught, with just 10 seconds of advantage. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek are about to launch from the front, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Porsev, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss just behind. In the third row, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora_gbr.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coquard must surely be out of the mix now?

i.imgur.com/V0P3Hyi.png

With 400m to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vandousselaere is caught after his valiant effort. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Porsev are neck and neck, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Maksimov breathing down their necks.

i.imgur.com/WwPbucq.png

100m to go and it’s still too close to call! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek looks to have the edge, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kennaugh is moving fast from behind - and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish has finally made an appearance. Who will take this?

i.imgur.com/xFJv3sV.png

We have a photo finish between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek! We must wait for the decision of the race jury, who give the victory to… pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Gerald Ciolek! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Porsev is an impressive 3rd, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish will meanwhile have to settle only for 10th today.

i.imgur.com/fVUFzte.png

Gaps are reported in the peloton, but we will have to see what the race director decides before we confirm anything. Many favourites will be hoping not to lose time here, and indeed they don’t - a degree of leniency being given.

i.imgur.com/hWxUmC1.png

However, a larger group of around 100 riders is recorded as having lost 2 minutes in the run-in. The biggest names are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan, Vasyliv pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Izagirre and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz - but fortunately no major GC contenders are caught up - a cautionary tale for them though.
