A hilly opener in South Africa. Not the toughest stage but some late hills and an uphill finish could already lead to a selection.

First two easily better puncheurs than the Spotify rider who is more a chrono man.

Adriamihajanarivo (a name I never spell again) takes the first KoM`s and is trying to wear the KoM jersey, which probably would be a first for a Madagascan rider in MG history. Panayotov meanwhile took the first sprint.

Generali for Ulissi is an easy call as their lineup shows their win ambitions. The second team working is the CT team La Poste. Dowsett seems to feel well here in South Africa and also has big ambitions.

Meanwhile the Madagascan ahead takes another 8 points in the two Cat.4 and is wearing indeed the mountain jersey tomorrow. Well done. Plus he takes the final sprint being easily the most successful of the break here.

Though they never got a big gap really and hence with 10km to go they were caught by the fast peloton. 2km later the first attacks by the riders, who want to avoid a sprint finish.

And they did a great job and with 2km to go the final uphill section starts and even some kind of trains here.

A huge field still. Hard to make and selection today it seems.
Costa in the lead now with Di Maggio on the other side. Still 1,3km to go though.

Later though went too early and struggles under the Flamme Rouge, where suddenly spectators are on the road!

Costa looking a lot better but is now attacked by Dowsett and Ulissi.

Also Ben Nasser, Schumacher, Roche just behind.

Dowsett is passing Costa, who seems too exhausted. Ulissi has the strongest sprint but can he still come around?

But it`s Dowsett with the best possible start into the race. Great win for the smaller La Poste team and the Brit clearly had the best route information after being here the 5th time in a row already! Even more impressive seeing him that strong after just arriving from Kazakhstan as one of the last here in South Africa.

Close fight for the bonus seconds. Costa in the end just inches ahead of Ulissi.

Behind them Navardauskas with a strong finish ahead of Ben Nasser, Di Maggio and Schumacher.

But no time gaps for the first 81 riders and all puncheurs in that group as also the breakaway, who now has a good GC at the moment.
