Tour of California - Stage 3
jph27
An Ardennes classic appears to have illegally entered the USA today for this third stage of the Tour of California. Trofimov and Gesink look like the favourites of the GC contenders, but Claeys and Bobridge may also want to have their say. And as yesterday proved, anything can happen.

i.imgur.com/ULf0laI.png

Once again, the first break got no leeway from the peloton. And like a Spanish election, neither did the second. Unlike a Spanish election, the third attempt was successful. Our plucky three for today? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Minoungou, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Camilo, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Gjolberg.

i.imgur.com/gfdZbEH.png

By the time we reached the first climb another two riders had joined the break. Yesterday’s crasher pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Samwel, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Vsyna would puncture but make it back to the slow moving peloton, though his team’s equipment manager may soon be fired.

i.imgur.com/C7VqKEz.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Camilo would take the Cat 2, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Samwel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Gjolberg would be dropped off the back on the climb but soon return. And in the peloton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Laizer would be dropped off the back, perhaps suffering from his injuries yesterday, later being joined by fellow crasher pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Guardini.

i.imgur.com/eBaSnsB.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Minoungou would take the intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Gjolberg and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Camilo. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Guardini had by now returned to the peloton, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Laizer was still around 2 minutes behind with yet another 150km to go. The break lead by around 5 minutes, but nothing to concern the peloton unduly - bigger worries included the type of pasta on offer that evening, and making sure they didn’t get the stern looking Eastern European masseuse after the stage.

i.imgur.com/iizhuZV.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander won the first Cat 3, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Samwel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Camilo. At this halfway point, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Laizer was now 3’30 down on the peloton - not really his day - while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Guardini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Fenn and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Korsaeth also found themselves dropped on the climb,. The breakaway still had 4’30 at this point, but by the time they reached the Cat 4 with 95km to go, the gap was down under 3 minutes - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander leading over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Camilo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Minoungou. Ever more riders, mainly sprinters and TTers, being shelled from the peloton by this point.

i.imgur.com/Uu3IfUG.png

At the Cat 4 with 70km to go, the order would be pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Camilo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Samwel, with the Cat 4 at 63km to go also seeing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Selander win, though with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Samwel second ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Camilo. But the pace was ratcheting up in the peloton, and ever more riders were being dropped. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink’s team doing most of the work. No big names dropped yet, but many TTers including yesterday’s star pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Durbridge. Up front, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Gjolberg and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Minoungou were also dropped and absorbed by the peloton with 45km to go - the gap down to only 1 minute.

i.imgur.com/AmKRZlm.png

With 40km to go the catch was made, and now it was time for the puncheurs to show their hands. The Cat 4 would go uncontested, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Naud leading the peloton over. Noticeably, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek is still in the peloton with only one more climb to go!

i.imgur.com/2m8L5Xu.png

And now we see the first attempt at an attack by some of the favourites, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Venter, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Edmondson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hoelgaard all attempting to get away with 27km to go. But the combined forces of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png eBuddy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Evonik would shut this move down almost immediately.

i.imgur.com/OaPrt37.png

Not to be deterred, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Hofland and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Venter would attack again with 22km to go, quickly building a lead of 1 minute. Puma were now chasing hard for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman though, dropping pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek in the process. Only 96 riders left in the peloton with 15km to go, plus the 4 out front - now with only a 30 second advantage.

i.imgur.com/kZlbcIY.png

Riders all over this final climb, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky manage to ditch their counterparts. But who’s this bridging over? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink are closing fast, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov in hot pursuit. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney is at the front of the peloton casting a watchful eye over proceedings. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily are the big disappointments today, already being dropped.

i.imgur.com/dWiAXML.png

Over the top of the climb with 10.6km to go, and the gaps are as follows:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky
+24 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink
+50 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov
+1’05 Peloton

i.imgur.com/JpkzECS.png

With 6km to go pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer had dropped back, but the other 4 attackers had formed a group - 1’18 ahead of the peloton! But with the peloton closing fast, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink decided to attack, distancing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky.

i.imgur.com/Iaj59iG.png

While this was going on, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman decided to attack as can be seen in the background, leaving us with a remarkable race situation with 3.5km to go. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney stands to lose 1’03 to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Abal and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Uran are a further 30 seconds back!

i.imgur.com/dgSkx2O.png

With 1km to go, the front three launch their sprint. But who will take it?

i.imgur.com/8mhkU2B.png

The answer is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Romain Sicard! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink takes 2nd, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov is 3rd. But what of the time gaps to the others?

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Goos and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman are next at 52 seconds
Then an 11 man group featuring pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van den Broeck, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Velits at 1’13
And then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Houle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Edmondson at 1’45. But where is Phinney? Here he comes...

i.imgur.com/oLqtZqA.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney crosses the line a long way back, clearly having lost the lead. But what does the clock say?

2’02! So not only does he lose the lead, he plummets to 18th in GC. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard now leads, but with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Trofimov are both within 10 seconds. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Uran and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Abal lost 3 minutes leaving them even further behind.

i.imgur.com/tJLeXbh.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Laizer finally crosses the line, 55’08 after Sicard. He isn’t declared OTL, but he’ll wish he was I’m sure after 200km alone today.
