Tour of California - Stage 2

203.4 almost completely flat kilometres on a circuit around Sacramento today. The joys.

i.imgur.com/qFgunka.png

Ready to get underway on Stage 1, a battle of the fast men on paper. But perhaps the breakaway can take it, or even noted slow man pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Gerald Ciolek. Or even pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Taylor Phinney, if he feels like it. Who knows? I do, but the rest of you will have to read on to find out.

i.imgur.com/9U37j0O.png

The first attempt at the breakaway is unsuccessful, being hauled back in like the morning’s catch. Then another move goes, featuring Bouwman pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png and Burkinabe champion Minoungou pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png, but Gazelle decide to smoke their kippers… I mean chances. The pace goes up again, and this game continues on and off until finally Wallays pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png and Gjolberg pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png are allowed to get away with 185km to go.

i.imgur.com/p8nvrJh.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Durbridge would attempt and fail to bridge, being chased down by Red Bull for Cavendish, before a move lead by Gougeard would also fail. The pace for the first 50km was at over 55km/h, which we will see how it had an effect on the race later - it was that fast, that I began to suspect organised motor doping in the peloton. Red Bull continued to lead the charge, taking the bull by the horns.

i.imgur.com/Y72LiXz.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Schachmann and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Affonso attempted to bridge, but were swallowed up - and that would be the catalyst for the break being allowed some freedom. The gap was gone by the time we hit the first intermediate sprint at 146km to go, disappearing like the patience of Puma’s manager as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs took 1st, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish 2nd, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Grosu 3rd - and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek nowhere to be seen.

i.imgur.com/fPEMFnE.png

The peloton would then finally let a four man breakaway quickly build a lead of over 1’30. Durbridge pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png, Thurau pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png, Tanovitchii pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png and Lunke pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png the lucky quartet, their lead at over 3 minutes by the time of the sprint at 130km to go. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Thurau, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Tanovitchii, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Durbridge the order through there.

i.imgur.com/AV5GDTs.png

And then a crash and an ensuing split in the peloton, with 110km to go! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Izagirre the biggest names down, plus key leadout men in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Lander and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Torres and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Kolar would be forced to abandon as a result, while after a chase for 5km the others would rejoin the peloton. At the halfway point, the breakway leads by 5 minutes, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Durbridge in the provisional lead. But with 85 km to go, the gap was coming down like a student at 4am when the drinks wear off.

i.imgur.com/leqIXUg.png

More drama! Velits pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png suffers a puncture. He manages to get back in the peloton, but a heart in the mouth moment for his manager I’m sure. The gap to the break meanwhile continues to decline like the pound sterling, dropping under 4 minutes with 70km to go and then under 3 minutes at the 58km to go point, with RBC protecting pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Phinney’s overall lead like it’s a precious box of Tim Horton’s finest.

i.imgur.com/DVRJeso.png

However, as we pass the 40km to go mark the gap has declined by only 15 seconds. Are the peloton making a mistake of the magnitude of overpaying Maxime Vantomme? It would appear not as the pace continues to increase once again, and thanks to Red Bull’s efforts alongside Pokerstars (energy drinks and gambling are not a combination I recommend usually) the gap would soon be heading down rapidly.

i.imgur.com/GnGc6AU.png

With 15km to go, the gap is still at 1’15”, which may be worrying the sprinters a little. Durbridge pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png takes the final intermediate sprint shortly after, ahead of Tanovitchii pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png and Lunke pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png. The gap is still stable, when suddenly all hell breaks loose in the peloton...

i.imgur.com/MwDubCF.png

Big crash with 12km to go! Samwel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png, Sagan pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png and Guardini pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png all hit the deck, and surely that is it for their hopes of remaining with the peloton in the finale here. But will the crash disrupt the chase?

i.imgur.com/5V9ugVJ.png

With 5km to go, the gap is still at 45 seconds and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Tanovitchii decides to make his move. He’s brought back, but then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Durbridge attacks and gets a gap, leading the peloton by 35 seconds with 2.5km to go. Can he make himself even more beloved by his manager here?

i.imgur.com/BEuGOKf.png

As we hit the flamme rouge, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Durbridge still has a 24 second advantage, but his companions have been swept up by the peloton. It’s a horribly mixed up sprint, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png at the front with Kluge and Lay leading out Mohs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png have Edmondson and Fisher up there, but Cavendish is further back. And for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Lander is ahead of Ciolek to give him a leadout. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kreder, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Maksimov are also floating around.

i.imgur.com/CpqzUak.png

The sprint is unleashed, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Maksimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Vesely are moving quickest with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish just behind. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Pokerstars completely collapsed due to the chase, and they are nowhere to be seen (I’m aware I need to work on my sprint reporting, apologies). But pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Durbridge is still in the lead with 100m to go!

i.imgur.com/Drs0pcr.png

On the finish line now and we have 5 riders spread across the road fighting for the win! But who will take it?

i.imgur.com/umXY0HT.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek is the answer! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Maksimov complete the podium, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish will have to be disappointed with 4th. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Durbridge takes 6th after a brave effort, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs can’t even make the top 10 despite his team’s best efforts. Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Samwel finishes 5 minutes down - his hopes of a strong GC must surely be over, but with Kudus staying safe then not all is lost for his team. No change at the top of the GC, or in any of the different classification leaderships.
