A 5.9km Prologue ahead of us here today in Colorado Springs. Taylor Phinney is the overwhelming favourite, but there’s always an element of randomness in Time Trials - and there are many similarly capable riders ready to fight it out for the stage win if he slips up.
Sterobo sets the early best time - 6’35”, which is how many minutes into the season it was before Grieg’s manager heralded their relegation. However, with performances like this (i.e. slightly competent ones) they should at least be better than Ayubowan were last season.
Hugues Mottin would improve on it by 2 seconds, before Emilien Viennet moved 4 seconds in front of him. A good day for the French riders, perhaps motivated by the threat of their nation once again getting cosy with Sarkozy.
Vlatos was one of the favourites heading into this Prologue, but he fell 1 second short of Viennet’s time. His manager could be heard screaming and smashing things in the team car, before quickly getting on the phone to try and sell Vlatos to other teams for an inflated fee.
Morgan Kneisky would surprise, matching Viennet’s time, but being placed behind him on fractions of a second. True story about Kneisky - a certain PCT (formerly PT) team has tried to sign him every transfer window. We now see why, other than it just being because the manager of that certain team is still stuck in 2013.
Another rider highly rated heading into this Prologue was Luke Durbridge. But he finished 6 seconds slower than Viennet, despite his manager’s repeated words of encouragement - and slightly creepy declarations of his love for him.
US Champion Brent Bookwalter set off with a point to prove on home soil, and took the lead with a time of 6’26” - 2 seconds up on Viennet. Nobody saw that coming, least of all his manager, who was not Abal to contain his excitement (sorry).
Peter Velits would be the first of the GC big guns to hit the road, finishing in a time of 6’40”. Not too bad, not too good from him - Becherovka finding out that only Sam Bewley can be relied upon to crush the opposition everywhere he goes, like a Kiwi Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Rigoberto Uran is here as part of the Coldeportes wildcard entry, but as his recent win in Corsica showed, you can’t count him out. He came in at 6’34”, before Yuri Trofimov flashed through at 6’31”. Solid performances from them both, though they both may be a little disappointed but with Coldeportes flying high at the top of the PCT, they won’t care - and it’s always hard to tell what exactly Mr Tinkov is thinking, except that it may endanger your life.
Romain Sicard set the best time of the GC contenders to that point though, coming through in 6’28”. Not bad from him, as he wouldn’t have expected to take time on Uran, finally making him being massively overpaid at the last minute last season look slightly better. Bookwalter still leads, but Phinney, Gesink and Coquard are all on the course so there is a good chance he won’t for much longer.
And here comes Phinney, sprinting for the line - will it be enough? Yes! Phinney moves into the lead with a time of 6’22”. Really we shouldn’t be surprised by this, and his aim to win this race and help RBC in their survival battle looks to be starting well. He is however, unlikely to unseat Peter Pancake in that team’s pantheon of legends.
Ignatiev can’t beat him, finishing 12 seconds down - I eagerly await his manager’s reaction to this latest underperformance. Can Gesink take the lead? No! Gesink finishes 9 seconds down, in a provisional 10th place. Very disappointing from him, but Phinney has been otherworldly today, and Gesink’s manager should really just be glad he didn’t find a way to crash.
Coquard is the last rider on course, and is coming under the Flamme Rouge. It looks like it could be close, what is his time? 6’32”. 10 seconds down on Phinney, and not the greatest performance, but the field was a little too strong for him - let’s hope for the sake of his manager, he goes better in the sprints. So Phinney gets this race off to a dream start for him and RBC, laying down a strong marker of his intentions - not that anyone expected anything less.
