Welcome to the 8th stage of this years Giro d'Italia and welcome to another exciting stage in the first Grand Tour of this season. Today is the real deal for the GC favorites and today they can advance in the GC or lose it entirely. The very best will win today and the winner of the stage, will most likely be the biggest favorite for the GC. Now let's get on with the stage!
Now as always we have a break to form and today it is represented by
J.Abreu
A.Manfredi
D.Dall'Oste
Juul Jensen
Brambilla
Comier
The Forcola de Livigno climb is the real deal to start off with and there is quite the crowd at the climb today. The break venture up the climb, as others have a harder time and the first riders are dropping down from the pack already
Dall'Oste takes the first KoM points of today on the Forcola de Livigno climb!
G.Jang eyes an opportunity to grab some more points as he takes the last 2 points on the KoM and place an attack with A.Destribois and A.Vichot. Only time will tell if this attack will be successful. Also if we go down to the pack, it is only consisting of 75 riders already.
Brambilla takes the next 10 points just ahead of Dall'Oste and makes the fight for the KoM more exciting. The earlier attack was only successful for A. Destribois, which now is 2 minutes from the front. Destribois also have another 2 minutes down to the chasing pack
Dall'Oste the next on the roll for another 6 points in the KoM competition and the fight between him and Brambilla looks like a hunt for the alpha male role. Meanwhile Destribois is trapped further down the order and doesn't look like a rider, that will make it to the front.
The main break remains the same with 4 riders out in front with the other 2 being 30 seconds down. Now they will go up the fearsome Passo de Gavia climb, which has a lucrative amount of 20 points. 25 groups are counted throughout the field and shows the difficulty of the stage, as the break now have 3'30 up to the front.
Abreu and Comier didn't manage to close the gap up to the main break and they are falling down the order from now on as they are joined by Destribois. Now from here on it will be a fight between the pack and the main break!
Brambilla and Dall'Oste have been dominating for the whole day and now they are once again tired of the pace set by the others, so they have now advanced to be alone out front going for victory. 8 km left to the top of the climb for the breakaway and only there we will see what the gap is down to the pack. The remaining kilometers will decide, whether they will fight for the stage win later.
Nerz and Wellens goes after their luck for the day and sets out for an attack, it doesn't look to be that succesful, but they manage to maintain the small gap for now. There is still 6 km left of the climb for these guys, so they are setting the pressure on the bigger guys now.
The remains of the breaks except for the front group is getting catched one by one, now D.Formolo have an attack! The pack is now down to only 28 riders and thus the selective stage of the climb has begun for sure. A surprise attack by the Italian though surely!
Wellens is not caught by the favorites, that are not willing to use energy to close the gap just yet. Formolo's attempt was unsuccesful though and thus Wellens now have a minute gap down to the favorites! Meanwhile Brambilla is now alone out front, as Dall'Oste has to drop down and now the KoM is up for grabs for the Italian. Lastly 10 riders are now trying to free themselves from the favorite group
Intensity is rising!
Madrazo, Pluchkin and Alarcon makes notice of this and now is the time for them to make their move! The others doesn't seem to have an immediate respond to the attack. These 3 are the guys to beat and Henao also have to be wary not to let them loose!
Brambilla gets over the top first and grabs the 20 points on the top. Passo de Gavia surely has left it's mark on the race and it still remains strong for the rest of the riders not yet at the top! This is the highest point of the tour with it's 2610 meters! There is currently a 1'30 minute gap down to Wellens, who might have to wait for the trio in order not to outdo himself.
The trio have now been joined by Guldhammer and still no response from Henao, that doesn't look like someone that will make a move anytime soon, This can also allow us to make an short status update on the times
Brambilla now goes into the final climb of Passo del Tonale with a minute down to Wellens, that is still alone and 40 seconds ahead of the now 5 man follower group now joined by Dall'Oste. The first half of the climb is the hardest, so if he gets pasts that with a solid gap, there should still be a chance to take the stage win!
As Wellens enters the final climb he now has 45 seconds to be precise down to the follower group, that also is in danger of getting caught by a 5 man group with Nibali, Denfil, Henao, Nerz and Keinath. However with the quality present in the follower group, that is still highly unlikely
Brambilla really have a hard time on the climbs, as do the others, but the gap is now only down at 30 seconds to Wellens. It could very much still work for the Italian, but he can praise with the fact he has the KoM to fall back on
Now impatience is still present down in the follwer group and Alarcon launches an attack for the stage win! Pluchkin and Madrazo are quickly at his side and the stage win is quite open! At the meantime Guldhammer does seem to have problems keeping up with the attack.
[center [/center]
Just as it was looking for a stage win for either Brambilla and Wellens, as Wellens gets caught by the follower group and Brambilla is soon to be next. Guldhammer further down has given up and will just have to recover from the rest of the climb, but he does seem to collect time on some riders. The 5 chaser meanwhile have not made the gap smaller, but the gap is in fact longer now.
As expected Brambilla was the next victim of the attack set by Alarcon and now with 2 km left of the climb they are all collected. He does seem like a rider with no energy left, so he will probably fall down the order from now on. He does get to wear the KoM jersey
Jose Alarcon did set out a strong sprint for the stage and kept the others and his back without trouble and takes the stage win. Wellens get consulation with a 2nd place, but will have to be annoyed getting caught on the final climb. Pluchkin takes the last podium spot.
Nibali and Denifl comes in 1'40 after the winner, as they managed to bridge a small gap down to Henao, who had an off day and losses 2 minutes in the GC to his main competitors. Thus we now have a more selective field of riders and the next mountain stages have a more definitive approach now and the team tactics are ready to be set.
The other GC favorites comes in a bit later and the field is really scattered, so the rest of the race will be all about getting involved on the mountain stages later on the race for these riders.
