Tour of the Middle East - Stage 9
The Rider
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/ME9.jpg

Another hard day in the mountains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M90.jpg

Many will be hoping for crampons, with the amount of climbing today. Ooo-ee! 6 riders did make the break:

- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Kasa (24 KOM points)
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Esmaeli
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Prado
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Semple
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Magnusson
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Herrera

No one was a danger for the GC, would they make it to the finish?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M91.jpg

Hard luck for the break. Once again, chiefly Carlsberg - Danske bank, the GC teams wanted to keep this one together. Must be after those bonus seconds at the finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M92.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Kasa was well placed for a good charge at the KOM jersey today, however, at the 1st climb of the day (the only KOM points which were contested by the break)pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Semple and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Esmaeli were first over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M93.jpg
42 KM to go. Looking down from above.

We are now on the penultimate climb (Jebel Yasar - 10.5 KM @ 8.1%) of the day, the break have just been caught. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby feeling good?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M94.jpg

With two kilometres to go on the penultimate climb pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Sarmiento attacks out of the favourites group, which totals less than 30 riders.

The Colombian stage winner would pick up the 16 points at the top and have 1'41 over the 22 man favourites group with 32 KM to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M95.jpg

At the rear of the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh is back up after falling. In vain would he push on, he would be one of 14 to abandon today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M96.jpg
24 KM to go.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Sarmiento is caught as we hit the final climb (Jebel Shams - 24.6 KM @ 7.2%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M97.jpg
15 KM to go.

Deeper into the climb the favourites group has been ground down to just 19 riders: no attacks just attrition. We can see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Poorseyedi clinging on to the end of the group.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png De Clercq, 12th in GC, is the most notable name to be missing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M98.jpg
8.4 KM to go.

Finally we see a big move from a favourite. That favourite is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Pomoshnikov! Big names will be dropped from this move ....

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M99.jpg

... pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Martinez, 4th in GC, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Marchi, 6th in GC, can't follow the 7 best on the day and look set to lose a packet of time with 5.5 kilometres to go. After instigating attacks yesterday it is a surprise to see the Cuban dropped at this point.

As he has looked all tour, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby continues to look indefatigable.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M991.jpg
5 KM to go.

Struggling yesterday, not today. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas attacks out of the lead group and is joined by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón! A small gap back to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Pomoshnikov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Zoidl and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M992.jpg
4 KM to go.

For the first time in the race, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby is dropped! The yellow jersey is dropped! On the limit with 4 KM to go he is well behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas, who leads on the road, but perhaps more crucially his race lead is slipping away to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz. The green jersey is riding himself into the race lead: he only needs '21.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M993.jpg

With under 3 KM to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz provisionally leads the GC, but only by mere seconds. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby heavily relies on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký to chase down those up ahead, the latter has to ride of course because pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Pomoshnikov, who is up the road, is a danger for his podium spot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M994.jpg

Under 2 KM to go. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Pomoshnikov leads pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón with the race leader in the background.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M995.jpg

Up front, in the battle for second, can pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas hold off those behind?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M996.jpg
Another team with something out of the ToME!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas wins this tough mountainous stage! What a win! He had the good legs today and wins with '23 back to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Pomoshnikov! The Xero Racing p/b Octagon rider moves up 5 places to 5th in GC.

The Spanish inquisition, in the form of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz, come home '34 down...

... Which is enough to see a change in the race lead. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký come home at '57 seconds meaning the former loses the race lead by '3 seconds and the latter holds on to his podium spot by just miliseconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M997.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Zoidl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Marchi finish together at 2'02, well dropped in the end. 10th, 8th and 7th in GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M998.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Martinez rounds out the top 10, but finishes more than 4'00 down on the stage. He drops from 4th to 9th in GC, Chiquita won't be happy with that: at all.

With three stages to go pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz now leads, not only the points classification, but also, the race overall.
