Another hard day in the mountains.
Many will be hoping for crampons, with the amount of climbing today. Ooo-ee! 6 riders did make the break:
- Kasa (24 KOM points)
- Esmaeli
- Prado
- Semple
- Magnusson
- Herrera
No one was a danger for the GC, would they make it to the finish?
Hard luck for the break. Once again, chiefly Carlsberg - Danske bank, the GC teams wanted to keep this one together. Must be after those bonus seconds at the finish!
Kasa was well placed for a good charge at the KOM jersey today, however, at the 1st climb of the day (the only KOM points which were contested by the break) Semple and Esmaeli were first over.
42 KM to go. Looking down from above.
We are now on the penultimate climb (Jebel Yasar - 10.5 KM @ 8.1%) of the day, the break have just been caught. Garby feeling good?
With two kilometres to go on the penultimate climb Sarmiento attacks out of the favourites group, which totals less than 30 riders.
The Colombian stage winner would pick up the 16 points at the top and have 1'41 over the 22 man favourites group with 32 KM to go.
At the rear of the peloton Salleh is back up after falling. In vain would he push on, he would be one of 14 to abandon today.
24 KM to go.
Sarmiento is caught as we hit the final climb (Jebel Shams - 24.6 KM @ 7.2%).
15 KM to go.
Deeper into the climb the favourites group has been ground down to just 19 riders: no attacks just attrition. We can see Poorseyedi clinging on to the end of the group.
De Clercq, 12th in GC, is the most notable name to be missing.
8.4 KM to go.
Finally we see a big move from a favourite. That favourite is Pomoshnikov! Big names will be dropped from this move ....
... Martinez, 4th in GC, and De Marchi, 6th in GC, can't follow the 7 best on the day and look set to lose a packet of time with 5.5 kilometres to go. After instigating attacks yesterday it is a surprise to see the Cuban dropped at this point.
As he has looked all tour, Garby continues to look indefatigable.
5 KM to go.
Struggling yesterday, not today. Salinas attacks out of the lead group and is joined by Antón! A small gap back to Hacecký, De la Cruz, Tvetcov, Pomoshnikov, Zoidl and Garby.
4 KM to go.
For the first time in the race, Garby is dropped! The yellow jersey is dropped! On the limit with 4 KM to go he is well behind Salinas, who leads on the road, but perhaps more crucially his race lead is slipping away to De la Cruz. The green jersey is riding himself into the race lead: he only needs '21.
With under 3 KM to go, De la Cruz provisionally leads the GC, but only by mere seconds. Garby heavily relies on Hacecký to chase down those up ahead, the latter has to ride of course because Pomoshnikov, who is up the road, is a danger for his podium spot.
Under 2 KM to go. Pomoshnikov leads De la Cruz and Antón with the race leader in the background.
Up front, in the battle for second, can
Salinas hold off those behind?
Another team with something out of the ToME!
Salinas wins this tough mountainous stage! What a win! He had the good legs today and wins with '23 back to Pomoshnikov! The Xero Racing p/b Octagon rider moves up 5 places to 5th in GC.
The Spanish inquisition, in the form of Antón and De la Cruz, come home '34 down...
... Which is enough to see a change in the race lead. Garby and Hacecký come home at '57 seconds meaning the former loses the race lead by '3 seconds and the latter holds on to his podium spot by just miliseconds.
Zoidl, Tvetcov and De Marchi finish together at 2'02, well dropped in the end. 10th, 8th and 7th in GC.
Martinez rounds out the top 10, but finishes more than 4'00 down on the stage. He drops from 4th to 9th in GC, Chiquita won't be happy with that: at all.
With three stages to go De la Cruz now leads, not only the points classification, but also, the race overall.
