Tour of the Middle East - Stage 8
The Rider
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/ME8.jpg

Final Climb - 35 KM @ 5%. Ouch
.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M80.jpg

After a week of small breaks, for the second mountainous stage we see a quality 8 man break get clear:

- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Kasa
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Iturria
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Magnusson
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Semple @ 7'28
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Mamykin
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Thill
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Herrera
- pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Barton

With some good climbers in there, many would think that break could make it to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M81.jpg
70 KM to go.

Green jersey, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker, setting a high pace. Despite no one in the break being a GC danger Carlsberg - Danske bank were intent on setting a high pace. When we reach the bottom of the first climb of the stage (the climb being 18.3 KM @ 7.1%), the break only have 2'00 over the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M82.jpg

The pace didn't slacken with the Danish team on the front. With 63 KM to go the peloton is down to 43, losing riders all the time, and the break only have 1'26 over the bunch and are in danger of being caught already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M83.jpg

The break know the peloton are coming up and they react. With 6 kilometres to go on the climb the break has now dwindled in size by half, the better climbers evident.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M84.jpg

And at the summit of the first climb of the stage with 53 KM to go, only two riders from the break remain out-front - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Iturria (who took the 20 KOM points) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Barton. Their gap to the peloton 1'10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M85.jpg

With 36 KM to go we hit the final climb - 36 KM @ 5.5%. Uphill to the finish from here on in. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby's team are where they have been all day - drilling along the favourites group. That said the two survivors from the breakaway did manage to pull out the lead to 2'41 at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M86.jpg

Attacks from the yellow jersey group. With 32 KM to go we see - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Vervaeke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Hirschlein, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Poorseyedi (@ 4'36) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Jim attack out of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M87.jpg

They spare little time in catching the two out-front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M88.jpg
16 KM to go.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Iturria, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Poorseyedi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Jim lead the race with 16 KM to go. They have pulled out a handy advantage on the 29 man favourites group - the gap being 3'38: the Iranian starting to become a danger for the GC. The other attackers are in no mans land.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M89.jpg

Behind we are yet to see a move from a GC rider, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký's team are now the ones setting the pace. But they can't stop the gap from expanding.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M892.jpg

And it is no long before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Jim distances the rest of the break with 10 KM to go. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Iturria, despite being in the break all stage, is the only one trying to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M893.jpg
9 KM to go.

A half-hearted attack from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Khripta is the start of the GC attacks up this punishing climb. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Martinez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz are the next to attack.
It may just be about the minor positions today as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Jim has over 4'00 lead on the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M894.jpg

With 7 KM to go pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz ups the pace looking to put the yellow jersey in difficulty. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby has yet to attack, is he in difficulty?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M895.jpg
5 KM to go.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Jim still leads with a good margin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Iturria is the next on the road, then come the favourites.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Poorseyedi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Martinez, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Khripta and, yellow jersey, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby are the most prominent GC riders up the road - together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M896.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký fights really hard to defend his podium place: he, alone, is the next best on the road. With the likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas in a group behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M897.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas leads the aforementioned group: more gaps look destined to affect the GC today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M898.jpg
A win for KAYAK!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Jim manages to hold off and take a famous win! His gap crumbled with the upping of pace by the GC favourites but the win is his: no one will begrudge his team a stage win here: with KAYAK - Clas Ohlsen showcasing an aggressive brand of cycling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M899.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby home in second @ 1'01: extends his GC lead. He showed his climbing skill can't be matched here: he set the pace for the final few kilometres and only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz could follow in the end: the Spaniard doing well to finish with the Dane, only loses '4 bonus seconds.

With pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Khripta in 4th the GC gets a bit shaken up today, once again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký finishes strongly to finish along with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Martinez to keep his podium place.

The pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas group came home @ 1'48 with only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón (of those who started the stage in the top 10) losing more than 2'00 on the stage after he buckled in the final. New Balance, with 3 in the top 10, take a commanding lead in the team competition.
