After three stages with no action from the GC favourites, who were no doubt saving their legs, we will surely see some action with this mountain top finish.
Three riders formed the break of the day, they were: Weiss, Robert & Herrera. With 41 KM to go they have 2'40 of an advantage.
On to the hills before the finish. With 30 KM to go, we see a big early move from a favourite. That favourite is Antón! he quickly catches up to the break and passes them, summiting first the penultimate climb.
Sarmiento tried to follow the Spaniard but couldn't.
Öste-Macdonald setting the pace.
For the first time in the race we see Carlsberg - Danske bank come to the front, a good sign their leader is felling good. With good reason they push on the pace, for Antón is a real danger for the GC.
Antón had a big gap back to the peloton, however, that was eroded away on the flat before the final climb. The question is could he hold off those behind and hit the climb with a gap?
No! Rojas Villegas, setting the pace, ensures the Isostar - Adriatic rider is caught just at the moment the final climb begins. The final climb being 7.6 KM @ 8.9%
Rojas Villegas sets the pace with 31 in tow behind. Geschke is towards the front and looking really good! All GC riders still in contention.
The calm before the storm!
Nothing changes with 5 KM to go. Surely an attack is imminent?
And there it is!
With 3.5 KM to go, Garby puts in a massive attack. De la Cruz is immediately on the wheel. Pomoshnikov tries to follow the big acceleration.
Everyone else? Distanced.
Under 3 KM to go.
Garby and De la Cruz are out of sight. About '30 behind Pomoshnikov, Hacecký (who so nearly lost time on stage 2), Antón and Martinez form the next group on the road.
With De Marchi separating that group from Zoidl, Tvetcov and Salinas.
One thing is for sure, this climb has shattered the peloton.
1 KM to go.
Garby and De la Cruz still lead with 1 KM to go. The latter however has contributed nothing to the pace setting. The Danish pure climber looking lean and mean!
Behind the battle for 8th is about to see Khripta (the second best New Balance rider on the road) come up to group Tvetcov. Not a great day for the Moldovan.
Now the question of the stage win ...
Who can stop him? !
.... a textbook climbing display from Garby sees him claim the stage win and race lead. He even managed to drop De la Cruz at the top and leads him by '18 in GC. Though the Spaniard will have his eyes on the TT to come.
Best of the rest? Hacecký finished really well, finishing the final kilometre just about quicker than anyone else. He was third on the stage just '32 down.
De Marchi (above) leads home Antón Pomoshnikov and Martinez @ '56.
We then look a long way behind. Khripta (8th) leads home Zoidl, Salinas and Tvetcov @ 2'09 down on the stage winner.
Hard to say any big name GC rider is definitely out of it, but we have a clearer picture now of those likely to fight for the win here. Stage 5 will see the first flat stage of the race.
