Tour of the Middle East - Stage 4
The Rider
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/ME4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M30.jpg

After three stages with no action from the GC favourites, who were no doubt saving their legs, we will surely see some action with this mountain top finish.

Three riders formed the break of the day, they were: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Weiss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Robert & pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Herrera. With 41 KM to go they have 2'40 of an advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M31.jpg

On to the hills before the finish. With 30 KM to go, we see a big early move from a favourite. That favourite is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón! he quickly catches up to the break and passes them, summiting first the penultimate climb.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Sarmiento tried to follow the Spaniard but couldn't.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M32.jpg
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald setting the pace.

For the first time in the race we see Carlsberg - Danske bank come to the front, a good sign their leader is felling good. With good reason they push on the pace, for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón is a real danger for the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M33.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón had a big gap back to the peloton, however, that was eroded away on the flat before the final climb. The question is could he hold off those behind and hit the climb with a gap?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M34.jpg

No! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Rojas Villegas, setting the pace, ensures the Isostar - Adriatic rider is caught just at the moment the final climb begins. The final climb being 7.6 KM @ 8.9%

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Rojas Villegas sets the pace with 31 in tow behind. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Geschke is towards the front and looking really good! All GC riders still in contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M35.jpg
The calm before the storm!

Nothing changes with 5 KM to go. Surely an attack is imminent?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M36.jpg
And there it is!

With 3.5 KM to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby puts in a massive attack. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz is immediately on the wheel. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Pomoshnikov tries to follow the big acceleration.

Everyone else? Distanced.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M37.jpg
Under 3 KM to go.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz are out of sight. About '30 behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Pomoshnikov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký (who so nearly lost time on stage 2), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Martinez form the next group on the road.

With pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Marchi separating that group from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Zoidl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas.

One thing is for sure, this climb has shattered the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M38.jpg
1 KM to go.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz still lead with 1 KM to go. The latter however has contributed nothing to the pace setting. The Danish pure climber looking lean and mean!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M39.jpg

Behind the battle for 8th is about to see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Khripta (the second best New Balance rider on the road) come up to group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov. Not a great day for the Moldovan.

Now the question of the stage win ...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M391.jpg
Who can stop him?!

.... a textbook climbing display from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby sees him claim the stage win and race lead. He even managed to drop pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png De la Cruz at the top and leads him by '18 in GC. Though the Spaniard will have his eyes on the TT to come.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M392.jpg

Best of the rest? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký finished really well, finishing the final kilometre just about quicker than anyone else. He was third on the stage just '32 down.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Marchi (above) leads home pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Pomoshnikov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Martinez @ '56.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Middle East/M393.jpg

We then look a long way behind. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Khripta (8th) leads home pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Zoidl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png and Tvetcov @ 2'09 down on the stage winner.

Hard to say any big name GC rider is definitely out of it, but we have a clearer picture now of those likely to fight for the win here. Stage 5 will see the first flat stage of the race.
