Welcome to the 5th stage of Paris-Nice and welcome to the first Mountain stage, where we will most likely see a chance in the Top 10 of the GC. The Climbers has waited long for this stage and it has really been showcased how nervous they have been of crashing in the other stages. Nonetheless we expect to see a clean race and hopefully an entertaining one of that
We start off with a report that we have a small isolated crash to start off with and has forced David Tanner to retire from the race
As always we have a break formed going for the KoM jersey
Stefan Petrovski
Tyron Giogieri
Tim Kennaugh
Truls Engen Korsaeth
Nairo Quintana
Jesper Hansen
Michel Koch
so a lot of strong names here, who could easily go out to win this stage if allowed room to maneuver. However as it is the first GC battle day it probably won't happen
Schelling and Penasa also join later. The break is kept at a 2½ minute deficit and won't be allowed any time to feel tempted to go for the stage win here!
Going into the first big Mountain climb we can see that Korsaeth is apprehended by the chasing pack together with Penasa and Schelling.
With 4 km left of the first climb Quintana is caught leaving only Koch, Kennaugh and Giogieri only with a minute deficit down to the chasing leader group.
Michel Koch decides to do it all alone and goes for a final desperate attack to keep the breakaway still strong out ahead to calm down the race for a bit. He has about 2 minutes already and it will be a while before he is catched again,
We see that the main pack is slowly getting sorted out, with reports that Kudus, Elissonde, Carapaz, Aru and Diaz are the first big victims for now and there will only be added to this left before going into the final climb of the stage.
In all this despair we see that the first attack on the GC comes here with 33 km left on the top of the climb! It is none other than Andy Schleck and Rein Taaramäe that is going for an early attack with most of the stage going uphill from now on!
Meanwhile König, Karnulin, Pantano and Brambilla are sorted out, leaving the pack to become a favorite group consisting of 26 men!
Here at the middle climb of Cote des Gets the two got caught again, only to get a more serious attack consisting of
Schleck
Amador
Madrazo
Sicard
Gesink
clearly leaving Taarame behind to recuperate before he can go serious again, but the World Champion is surely not done!
The attackers again didn't look like going 100 %, but they have managed to sort most of the riders out creating a new Favorite group. The stage is really set beatifully here at the final climb of Avoriaz
Schleck
Taaramäe
Dombrowski
Amador
Gesink
Sicard
Madrazo
Lecuisinier
Velits
Kritskiy
Tenorio
Abal
Keizer
Shortly after we see that Schleck, Taaramae and Dombrowski going for an attack, making the formed favorite group to explode into small bits. We still have 10 km left of the stage and Avoriaz will really be painful for many climbers. The trio overtakes Michel Koch, which will most likely fall behind. In the back Timofey Kritskiy doesn't look too well today
We had to wait for another 6 kilometers before we see that Andy Schleck is going for a chance to sit in the Throne of Avoriaz and also take the GC lead! Taaramae tries to counter the attack, but it looks like the World Champion has something to his claim. Meanwhile Dombrowski is done for the day and will have to limp back toward finish.
Behind Gesink, Madrazo, Sicard, Amador and Lecuisinier have formed a group to stop the time time loss, they currently have a 1'37 minute gap to the World Champion and only half that time up to Dombrowski. Let's see if this coalition can stop the attack!
Andy Schleck wins the stage with ease and comes in with a gap of a 2½ deficit down to the 5 man group. Taaramae comes in for 2nd place shortly after with Dombroski taking 3rd with a good gap down to the 5 chasers. The other climbers are trying to minimize their time loss after a long day in the Mountains.
Amador takes 4th place with a small gap down to Sicard and Madrazo, who also manage to create a gap down to Gesink and Lecuisinier, Tenorio, Abal and Keizer comes in at split times with not that big of a time loss. However the big surprise is that Timofey Kritskiy had such a bad day
