Tour de San Luis - Stage 6
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0316.jpg

Might be one of the hardest stages despite the rather easy first 140km. Pretty flat with only some easy up and down but then the longest climb of the race towards the finish.

The puncheurs are favourite here and Costa needs to defend his new lead, while in especially Froome will need to attack to gain the time lost in the TT.

LLS, Bellis, Vastaranta were the other 3 strong uphill guys on the first hill stage. But the list of puncheurs is pretty long.

6 riders in the break:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0335.jpg

Let`s make it short. Far too many teams chased behind. Telkom for Ben Nasser, Arrinera for Froome, Indosat for Zaini, Hugo Boss for Costa and Karcher for Vogt. Hence the break was never allowed a big gap despite being no danger.

They made it clear, that it`s a day for the top riders and they don`t only want the GC fight but also the stage win!

So a few kilometers before the climb starts, the group is already caught!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0338.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bellis is the better Ayubowan rider in this race apparently despite his TT lack. So he is the one to attack the GC podium. Behind him immediately pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Froome
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nns.png Sanchez Gil
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Zaini
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Costa
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Bystrom
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Borges
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ben Nasser

Others such as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar.png Vogt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Schumacher, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Caruso, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Reichenbach, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Vastaranta or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Betancourt just behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0353.jpg

But only the two former team mates Bellis and Froome opened a gap. Back in their Jaguar days, they already dominated the PCT hills. Today they are in front again with 3km to go on the steepest part with 13%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0357.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Reus seems to feel well today. He is not one of the very best puncheurs but delivered himself a decent GC due to the time trials and today he also wants to enter the top10. So he slowly diesels himself up into 3rd position while Karcher`s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar_por.png Paulinho is chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0359.jpg

A group of 8 is formed behind Reus.
First and with a small gap already the GC leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Costa.
Then:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar_por.png Paulinho
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Vastaranta
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ben Nasser
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Rabie
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Betancourt
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar.png Vogt
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič

So pretty much the best of the other stage again, while UBS, Spotify, Euskaltel and today also surprisingly Netia (LLS/Palini) missed this move.
Also Visit Ukraine with their trio and Indosat with Zaini behind, who are chasing.
Borges, Bibby, Mehr-Wenige other riders to be in the next group of 15 around those.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0373.jpg

Bellis/Froome still in front. They have opened a 30s gap to the next duo as Costa joined Reus!
Then the big surprise Vastaranta, who again is up there with the best.

Behind them 14s later the two groups merged.

Big losers today it seems riders such as Caruso, Zardini, Palini. Roy, who are another group behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0375.jpg

Only 600m left and still the same situation. This time the winner will come from the first two though. But gaps are open and will change the GC quite a bit as some riders high up there such as Paillot are far down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0379.jpg

Costa sees the gap and knows, that the GC will remain on his shoulders. But he is fighting to avoid a big loss and gapped Reus now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0381.jpg

Froome proves to be the strongest puncheur. As seen already before, he outsprinted Bellis and wins the stage with a 13s gap. Still a fantastic result for Bellis as well.

Costa is losing 28s and wasn`t that much slower on the climb. Just started a bit too late.

GC wise he will defend the lead but is down to 55s to Froome. Bellis might be back into the top5 again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0383.jpg

Two surprisingly good finishers today. Reus in 4th and Vastaranta as 5th. 43s and 51s for them. This means later will defend the podium while Reus clearly enters the top10 in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0385.jpg

Bibby with a late sprint gains a few seconds making it a good Ayubowan result. 1'18 for him and 1'27 for the group behind including most big names such as Vogt, Ben Nasser, Bystrom, Roglic, Zaini, Betancourt or the VisitUkraine trio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_06_PCM0387.jpg

Big loser today surely Luis Leon Sanchez. Not his day. And he is losing 2min. together with Reichenbach and Mehr-Wenige. He will drop to 4th in the GC which is still solid and hopefully has a better day tomorrow.

Zardini, Schumacher, Roy, Caruso in later groups losing 2'39 to 3'10 today.

In the GC Roglic now 6th behind Bellis and ahead of Reus. Then Vogt, Ben Nasser and still Zardini.

The Visit Ukraine trio between 11th and 15th with Betancourt and Bibby in the mix.

UBS desaster just outside the top15 as also Zaini or Borges and Bystrom and Euskaltel. Not their race.
